The eThekwini Municipality and the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Edtea) today unveiedl a raft of interventions aimed at ensuring that Durban beaches unceasingly remain South Africa’s unrivalled tourist mecca during the festive season.
These interventions include the recruitment of more than 340 security officers, deployment of 340 Metro Police trainees, the placement of additional cleaners and the beefing up of the cleaning shifts.

There is low probability of load shedding up until January 13 due to the reduced demand for electricity over the festive break, Eskom said. Eskom issued a statement this morning on the system's status. There has been no load shedding for four consecutive days. The power utility however noted that the rainy season from December to March could impact coal handling and feeding to broilers - which could affect generation production.

The Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested two councilors from the Abaqulusi Municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal and a regional secretary of a political party in the area. The three were arrested this morning while allegedly handing over 20-thousand rand to a DA councilor. It's believed the money was a bribe to the councilor to abstain during a vote of NO confidence against the municipality speaker. The Hawks were allegedly tipped off by DA provincial leader Zwakele Mncwango.

The MyCiti bus strike seems far from over in Cape Town, this after reports surfaced that dismissed employees gathered outside the Cape Town Civic Centre this morning hoping that their issues would be raised. Some buses were burnt in the past few days.

Nyanga, which has the highest murder rate in South Africa, received its second police station yesterday, when it was officially opened by Police Minister Bheki Cele.

The Nyanga police station in the Western Cape remained the police station in South Africa recording the highest number of murders, according to the the country's crime stats.

South Africa and Rwanda have had a major diplomatic fallout yesterday which saw a tit-for-tat recall of the two countries' two diplomats over insults hurled at international relations and cooperation (Dirco) minister Lindiwe Sisulu by a pro-Rwandan government website. According to a report, the website, which has since taken the offending story off, called Sisulu a "prostitute" in the headline.

The CEO of the Road Traffic Management Corporation Advocate, Makhosini Msibi says it's unacceptable that close to 15 thousand people die on the country's road every yearr, mostly during the festive season. He says there's already been a 19 percent increase in road fatalities this year compared to this time last year. Msibi has been speaking at the launch of an awareness campaign against drinking and driving in Bryanston north of Johannesburg.
