Yesterday we spoke to Gauteng health MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko about the shortage of 18 neonatal ICUs in Gauteng hospitals. During the interview, the MEC said he had spoken to Gauteng DA’s shadow health MEC Jack Bloom about the shortage and from what she understood, they had an understanding. We now have Jack Bloom, on the line and he wants to respond to that interview.

In its bid to increase its skills pool and empower young people, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure held a career exhibition for opportunities in the oceans and built environment. They also used the exhibition to announce on newly proclaimed small harbours that will be built in provinces like KWaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Northern Cape. One person has been injured after an ammonia cylinder exploded at a factory in Chloorkop, Kempton Park, earlier today. The exact cause of the incident is still unknown, however, the injured employee was treated on scene and has since been transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Advocate Charles Mnisi, the lawyer for accused number three, is currently cross-examining Zandile Khumalo in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial. She was present when Meyiwa was shot and killed at his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo's home in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg. Mnisi has put it to Khumalo that state witness Mthokozisi Twala will come and testify that accused number 2 had a knife during the alleged murder. Khumalo, who earlier claimed one of the suspects had dreadlocks, insists that she saw accused number one and two during the incident.

It is a busy period for the Gauteng Education department. Tomorrow is the last day for parents to do online applications for grade 1 and 8 in Gauteng. The department says no applications will be accepted after the deadline. Over 700 000 applications have been successfully submitted so far. All parents will outstanding documents need to submit them by the 28th of July. The department has also launched a safety programme targeting 1700 schools following high incidents of violence in a number of schools in the province.
