It’s a big weekend in KwaZulu-Natal. This year’s reed dance ceremony, ‘umkhosi womhlanga’ will be taking place in Nongoma. There have been uncertainties over whether or not it would take place as the Zulu Royal family continues its fight over the throne. The South African Cabin Crew Association and Numsa are condemning the South Gauteng High Court’s decision to liquidate SA Express. The unions say the Department of Public Enterprises has played a direct role in destroying the airline and shouldn’t absolve itself of responsibility. They say Minister Pravin Gordhan should be held accountable for the liquidation. The high court placed SA Express in final liquidation on Wednesday. Malesela Teffo has been struck off the roll. The Legal Practice Council brought an application before the court for Teffo to either be suspended or struck from the roll. The council received numerous complaints against him, some pre-dating the Senzo Meyiwa trial. These include contemptuous behaviour in court and misleading the court. Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis is calling on Police Minister, Bheki Cele to urgently establish a multi-disciplinary operational task team focused on tackling kidnapping and extortion activities in Cape Town. Just this afternoon, Cele revealed that police in the Western Cape are investigating 32 cases of kidnapping that occurred between March and September this year.

Former Chief Justice, Sandile Ngcobo will lead an independent panel that will recommend on whether or not President Cyril Ramaphosa should face an impeachment inquiry over the Phala Phala scandal. National Assembly speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula announced last night that Ngcobo will be working with former Gauteng High Court Judge, Thokozile Masipa and University of Cape Town's associate professor of public law, Richard Calland. The panel will be given 30 days to evaluate the evidence and report back to the speaker, however, it hasn't been announced when they will start working. What should we make of this panel? The Minerals Council South Africa has launched an internal emergency Minerals Council Jagersfontein Relief Fund. Its members will contribute to the fund to help with the cleanup and reconstruction of infrastructure. One person died and many were injured following the collapse of the tailings dam in the Free State on Sunday. The council sent a team to assess the extent of the damage and its president, Nolitha Fakude visited the area with Minister Gwede Mantashe earlier this week.
