Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence has cleared Deputy State Security Minister, Zizi Kodwa from allegations that he covered up the  Phala Phala robbery. The committee says there is no independently verifiable  information to support the allegations. Kodwa was accused of not only knowing about the robbery, but using  crime intelligence funds to pursue alleged suspects. The findings do not affect ongoing investigations by law enforcement officials on the matter. We are now joined by Ganief Hendricks, Al Jama-ah MP and Member of the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence

Acting Speaker and Chair of Chairs in the City of Johannesburg Councillor  Colleen Makhubele.says she will not be appealing today’s court interdict by the City of Joburg, The interdict prevents a special sitting of the council she had scheduled. The sitting was meant to officially elect an acting speaker following the ousting of Vasco Da Gama. It is also understood there was a plan to discuss the future of City of Joburg mayor, Dr Mpho Phalatse. Da Gama’s position remains vacant until the council elects an acting speaker officially.  We are now joined by City of Joburg’s mayor, Dr Mpho Phalatse.

The Legal Practice Council has just confirmed that Paul Ngobeni who was Public Protector’s legal advisor on the CR17 matter is not registered with the council. You may recall that during the ongoing Parliamentary Inquiry into the fitness of Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane to hold office – Members of Parliament asked questions about whether Ngobeni was qualified to render services to the Office of the Public Protector. So legally speaking – what does this mean for his position within the legal fraternity?

The City of Tshwane continues its fight against residential estates with illegal connections. Last week is switched off the lights at Copperleaf Golf and Country Estate in Centurion. The City alleged the estate had illegally connected its electricity. It has now identified 10 more residential estates in its bid to recover revenue it lost due to electricity meter tampering. Those found to have tampered with their meters will be fined. For more on that, we are now joined by City of Tshwane’s MMC for Finance, Peter Sutton.

As the Parliamentary Inquiry into the fitness of Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane to hold office continues. We are now joined by her legal representative Advocate Dali Mpofu who will give us an update in terms of how things have panned out in Parliament so far, Mpofu will also talk to us about the suspended Public Protector’s decision to approach the Western Cape High Court, asking it to enforce its order invalidating her suspension. This as it was widely reported over the past weekend that Mkhwebane was denied access to her office, despite the Western Cape High Court having declared that her suspension was invalid.

The Gauteng Department of Education has called for school activities to resume as it disadvantages learners and they would go as far as getting an interdict. The spokesperson of the Department has announced that the chairperson of the SGB will not return to the school. The spokesperson was responding to the concerns raised by parents at Fred Margardie Primary School, including allegations of rape.

The African National Congress is looking to make wholesale changes to the immigration policy. One of these changes is bringing an end to marriages of convenience and foreign nationals marrying South Africans to obtain citizenship by naturalisation. The draft resolution suggests that South African citizens marry a foreign national, their rights and consequences thereof should be governed by other laws such as the Marriages Act and the Children Act. The governing party seeks to table these proposals at the upcoming elective congress to be held in December. When closing the provincial conference yesterday, party leader Julius Malema warned EFF delegates that Gauteng is what will liberate South Africa and without a grounded EFF that is based on the quality of highly recruited members, then the organisation will not have a future.

In a landmark judgment, the Western Cape High Court has ordered the City of Cape Town to change their housing policy after it was found to be unconstitutional and discriminatory against women. In the court order, it called for sales agreements under this policy to be rectified to reflect both the married male beneficiaries and their spouses as co-purchasers in equal shares of the housing units. Our next guest unpacks how women have not had access to housing support due to not being listed as a beneficiary.
