Gun Free South Africa says they are saddened by the news of the death of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a man who tirelessly championed human rights in South Africa and across the world. The organisation has described Tutu as someone who was a committed supporter of a gun free South Africa, having called for SA’s first democratic election to be gun free, supporting SA’s first national firearms amnesty on 16 December 1994 and soon thereafter becoming a patron of Gun Free South Africa after the organisation was established in 1995.

As we mourn the passing of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. We hear from the Anglican Bishop of Namibia, Luke Pato who is going to speak to us about Tutu’s influence on the African continent and his role in promoting peace across the globe as we know that Archbishop Tutu was regarded as South Africa's moral compass. Many of course will always remember how Tutu led the Truth and Reconciliation Commission with distinction and how he coined the phrase ‘Rainbow Nation’.

An inmate tried to commit suicide during a raid at the Thohoyandou Correctional Facility in Limpopo today. The inmate started cutting himself all over his body with a razor in the presence of the Acting National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale and SABC cameras. The inmate was found in possession of drugs and a cell-phone. He immediately produced a razor and started cutting himself. He lost a lot of blood and was taken for medical attention.

The Home affairs Department has won a legal battle that spanned over a decade. The battle was between the Department and two companies over a one-point-five billion Rand tender for an electronic document management system. New Dawn Technologies and Valor IT had taken the department to court in 2010 when Home Affairs cancelled a tender due to the National Treasury warning that there was no money for such a huge tender. The two companies lost their case against the department, and have also been unsuccessful both in the Gauteng North high court in 2020 and the Supreme Court of Appeal in September. And recently on Wednesday, the Constitutional Court dismissed the two company’s application for leave to appeal as it found it "lacks reasonable prospects of success".

Earlier today, the department of health announced that all COVID-19 quarantine is to be stopped with immediate effect and this applies to both vaccinated and unvaccinated contacts. The department also revealed that contact tracing will also be stopped with immediate effect except where there is a cluster outbreak.

World News: The Ministry of Health in Kenya has banned the unvaccinated from public places, public transport, government buildings and other places. Currently, more than 270,000 cases have been recorded in the country since the start of the pandemic and the ministry is concerned that the numbers have gone up from 1% in early December to 29.7% as of Wednesday 22 December.
