In this week's episode I speak with Antoinette "FAB" Garth about her loc journey.

Antoinette Garth is a mother of 4 who started her Loc journey in April of 2005. There were so many things that contributed to the transition from being a teen right out of high school to transforming into adulthood and embracing her loc journey. Locs had always intrigued Antoinette, she understood the spiritual connection between herself and locs. She knew that locs would create some self-awareness, self-love, and power within self. Antoinette continued on to have locs until 2015 and decided to loc again in 2016.

Antoinette is on her second set of locs and has grown even more comfortable with her self and locs.  As a mother, African Dance Instructor and Natural Hair Stylist locs fit her lifestyle perfectly.

This week we are exploring another woman Loc Journey.  Trae Daniels started her micro loc journey on March 21, 2020.  With the amount of hair she already had, she gained frustration with wash days and trying to create styles that just didn't seem to fit her.

She has exactly 313 microlocs and she finds them to be very convenient and versatile.

Trae has a retie regime that consists of natural oils, rosewater, and water, and make sure she dedicates time monthly for her professional appointment.

This episode is a "must listen".  My fellow Flint, MI native Dawn Demps talk about reasons why she decided to join the #LOCGang.  Not only does Dawn share her story with us, but she also speaks on our history, the black women, and our culture.

Her passion for the black community is always at the forefront and her passion for "the people" is exhibited in this episode.

Dawn is relatively new to the loc journey but is no stranger to the process.  She believed that our hair will do what it's supposed to do if we just leave it alone.  Her loc process consisted of two-strand twist, monthly visits to her loctician, and only natural products such as water, oil, and essential oils.

Dawn decided to leave her bang area out, so she still has the flexibility to be creative by having both locd and loose hair.   

More about Dawn Demps

Dawn has been involved with community advocacy and organizing since 12 years old. She utilizes her own lived experiences to connect with students and parents to promote tools for self-advocacy, structural reforms and strives to champion the concerns of these populations.   

She holds an MA in Social Justice Studies from Marygrove College in Detroit, MI, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Arizona State University in Education Policy and Evaluation.

She has published articles examining the possibilities of youth-inspired school leadership as exhibited through youth voice and participatory action research,  unpacking the difficulties and potential of Black and Brown collaborative educational leadership and how art can be used to expose the experiences of Black youth who have experienced school exclusion. She is currently conducting a critical ethnographic oral history study of a grassroots community advocacy group comprised of Black natural and other mothers who are galvanizing to challenge and dismantle the educational policies and practices that exclude Black children from educational spaces

Dawn has been awarded the 2020/21 American Association of University Women Dissertation Fellowship and Arizona State University Dissertation Completion Fellowship. A sample of her other recognitions includes the 2019 University Council for Education Administration (UCEA) Putting Research Into Action Award, 2019 Hilliard Sizemore Research Fellow, UCEA Barbara Jackson Scholar, and Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Honorable Mention.  She additionally serves as a member of the Arizona Department of Education’s African  American Advisory Council and is the proud mother of 3 children: Journi, Jayanti, and Zora- ages 17, 15, and 8 respectively.

Happy New Year! I am so excited to share with you what I have created for you!

My family and I are owners of a beauty school and we just celebrated 21 years of owning and operating the beauty school.  We have several different programs such as cosmetology, esthetics, manicuring, instructor training, and natural hair. 

Natural Hair programs are rare to find and cosmetology curriculums do not spend a great deal, if any at all on the proper education of working with naturally curly, coily textures and for years, I would see students from all over graduate these expensive programs to enter the real world still lacking in the education of their textured hair. 

It has been my desire to bring the education that I share with my natural hair programs to people all over that are interested in learning the hands-on and theoretical portion, improving their skills, increasing their income, and most importantly providing an excellent service to their clients.

In this week’s episode, I share an opportunity I had over the past weekend and the ah-ha or awareness I gained.  I also share why and how this podcast came to life and a huge accomplishment for my first year as a podcast host.

This past weekend I was able to help bring characters of "The Shade Squad" to life by styling their hair.  Here is what that experience taught me:

• People are nervous about letting new people touch their Natural Hair

This podcast was created to educate, empower, and embrace our essence through natural hair and bring awareness and education to those who want to learn more about their hair.  I know that doing the inner work through acts of self-love through my 5 Pillars will provide the confidence to embrace your true self through the acceptance of Natural Hair.
