What I would like to tell you this morning is that we often miss the answers God gives to our prayers because we have put God into a box.

At times God humors us. At other times, He does things that seem foolish to our thinking but serve a greater purpose.

It is amazing that God shows up in the most unexpected of places, at the most unexpected of times. Share good news to the most unexpecting people from the person they least expected to hear it from.

Wilderness, wil·der·ness (noun): a tract or region uncultivated and uninhabited by human beings; an empty or pathless area or region; wild or uncultivated state. 

The promises of God have already been fulfilled to find your way through it.

The issue at hand is belief in the God who makes promises.

It is faith in the face of impatience.

It is hope that extends beyond what I can control.

I am not sure what you are waiting on. I am not sure what you have been praying for. I am not sure if you have been able to see little answers to prayer along the way.

God is not slow in keeping His promises. We gather today, three weeks from Christmas to remember that part of our walk with God.

Joseph is dead & is buried in Egypt.

Through all these stories, there is one constant factor. There is a God that cares enough about us to enter our time and space to guide us. God is the one working in us to bring about glory in our lives.

We believe you can’t do life alone.

Some of us spend our entire lives without discovering how powerless we are without God and how powerful he can be, even in and through us.

Joseph learns humility.

- Joseph has the opportunity to get vengeance, but instead he prepares a feast for his family!

- What his brothers meant for evil, God has used for good.

Perspective #1 – The person who needs forgiveness.

Let’s talk about perspective. One definition of perspective that I like is, “a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.”

What if we flipped our perspective?

What is we said, God if I need to walk through the valley to get to the other side…I will do it, because I will learn how to trust You!

God’s presence, promises, and dreams don’t change for my life whether I’m in the valley or on the mountain.

Have you ever been in a situation where you “woke up,” either literally or figuratively, to discover that God had been with you all along?

Some of you have been wrestling with God (or perhaps you have been wrestling in wondering where God is in the midst of your struggles).

In this part of the story, Jacob is wrestling with himself.  He is alone.  He has been sent from his family.  He is going to a new place to begin his family. . . Without mom. Without dad.

But in this wrestling, in this fighting, God is doing something new.  And He wants to do way more than simply give you some new definitions for words.  He stands ready to fight with you. To wrestle with you.  To kick up the dust.  But He also stands ready to fight for you.  To give you a new name.
