New Jersey had slavery? Yes….it did. As we’re taught in school, the first African slaves landed in Virginia in 1619. The fact that Dutch New York was the second colony to import slaves is less well known. Unlike those in Virginia—indeed, unlike those in any other North American colony—the first slaves in New Netherland were not individually owned. The Dutch West India Company, a private company largely sponsored by the Dutch government, owned and controlled the province of New Netherland, which today encompasses the states of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

In this episode I’m joined by Kevin, who is one of my former students. Clinton Road is located in West Milford, Passaic County, New Jersey. The road is tied to many tragedies and much lore. Join us as we discuss Clinton Road, and Kevin discusses his experiences when visiting the area. From the ghost of a boy who drowned, to animals who were left behind after the closing of a jungle zoo, the legends tied to this area are quite interesting.

This is a reading episode on Berry’s Chapel, in Quinton, Salem County, NJ. There is a lot of repetitive material out there on Berry’s Cahpel, much of which is contradictory and more legend than historical fact. However, the scant information we have is quite interesting.

In addition to the reading, you’ll hear me go off on something who very dramatically said that there was no slavery in New Jersey. And I’m naming her “Karen.”
