As you know, I have been highly impacted by a book from Richard Rohr titled Falling Upward. In this book Rohr emphasizes the distinctive transition from 1st to 2nd Half of Life. In short, the first half is generally triggered primarily by an ego-driven focus of building up your needs for self-esteem and self-importance, which are often referred to ego-driven needs. Rohr points out that this is a most important and necessary part of life because it establishes the confidence and credentials to proceed to vastly meaningful life.
The 2nd half is a transition that most often occurs in in the latter third of life, generally becoming apparent more in the 60’s and early 70’s. We used to call it growing old gracefully but I think it entails so much more. In the 2nd half we can find that we are much less obsessed with building up the ego. We somehow discover contentment with ourselves and find the desire to focus more on soul enriching activities such as service and a willingness to build relationships with people of like-mindedness.
Today Producer Paul and I will banter about the precepts involved in primarily the 2nd half of life as we also explore the more common ego-driven approach of the 1st half.

Boy do we have a special show today. Our guest is one of my very favorite people on the planet. It’s my son, Austin Hedges. Austin is an expert on our subject today, which will be all about the tension between finding personal contentment with your life and the other side of a never-ending desire for self-improvement. Are the two compatible? That’s what we’ll talk about.
You know, I had never even really thought much about the subject until Austin brought it up to me in the last couple of weeks. After a bit of consideration, it truly is quite a vexing tension. I can’t wait to discuss it.
Just briefly, let me explain why I think Austin Hedges happens to be an expert in this subject. Austin’s job description is one in which employees are never supposed to be satisfied or content with their performance. He is a professional athlete as the starting catcher for the San Diego Padres. Improvement is always expected. Is it possible for a professional athlete to be content and still seek to improve?
Let’s see what Austin has to say.

I am really looking forward to our show today because we are about to take a direction that we have never before broached. We have with us relationship expert and author, Elliott Katz and today Elliott and I will have a discussion about his book, Being the Strong Man a Woman Wants.
I have so many questions for Elliott like (a) are women really frustrated about a plethora of weak men running around the dating scene? (b) how does the strong man motif come into play in the 2019, era of the ever-expanding strong women movement? (c) and mostly, what does it actually mean to be a strong man? This is going to be fun!
Elliott Katz is the author of seven nonfiction books and has appeared regularly on radio and television interviews. He teaches the principles in this book to men and women, and speaks at conferences to groups of both men and women.
Elliott’s book has withstood the test of time in that it was first written in 2007, rewritten in 2012 and is still selling today.
Let’s bring on Elliot Katz to discuss his potentially controversial book, Being the Strong Man a Woman Wants.

Let me state up front. THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE EPISODES.
Today marks the first time in two years of podcasting that we will do a show on planning for the New Year of 2019. And now it is two consecutive weeks. That’s kind of surprising since much of my past has been about Life Planning yet we have not produced a single show on that topic. And today our approach to life planning may be strikingly new for most of our listeners but it is a process I have used most of 2018 and I have found it quite gratifying as well as productive.
In order to help set us straight on this unusual path I am with my special friend and spiritual guide Taryn Voget. As a busy Executive Coach, entrepreneur and author of the delightful book, Trust Fall, Taryn is full of out of the box thinking when it comes to most matters in life and life planning.
I asked Taryn to write a brief paragraph on her thoughts toward New Year’s planning and these are the provocative words she wrote:
Many of us push ourselves to continually grow and expand. But what if we don’t need to work so hard? What if life knows exactly where to find us to deliver the experiences we need for our own evolution? And what if there is no real action necessary on our part other than to be more aware of life’s bigger plan? This podcast explores new ideas about our own evolution and how life is here to serve our highest destiny and greatest expansion…always.
So let’s all be ready to have our traditional view of life planning challenged by the insightful and innovative thoughts of Taryn Voget.

You know, at this time of year most everyone will be blogging and podcasting in some form on New Year’s Resolutions or Goals. As much distaste as I have for the idea of New Year’s Resolutions, mostly because they rarely make any difference in your life, I think The Next Chapter would be remiss if we failed to address the subject.
I find the bulk of my reluctance to embrace the notion New Year’s Resolutions has to do with the notion that these goals are most often about accomplishments that may or may not have anything to do with internal realities like character or personal identity issues. Basically, what I am saying is that, with New Year’s Resolutions, we can fall into a trap of focusing on what we do rather than who we are.
Today my conversation is with my good friend, Terry Hershey, who has made the “who you are” question the focus of his vocation. As an avid reader, author, renowned public speaker, and life coach Terry is as close an expert on this subject as one can be.
So let’s bring on Terry Hershey to enlighten us on this most important subject of Identity Processes over New Year’s Resolutions.

Today my special guest is Adrian Laurentiu who comes to us all the way from Uganda, Africa. He is the Country Operations Manager for the NGO Wells of Life and has committed his life to public service of humanity. Although Adrian is from Romania and has Bachelor degree in Music and a Masters degree in International Relations and Diplomacy and is currently working on a PhD African Political Geography, Adrian’s primary desire in life is to serve humanity in Africa.
So today’s question is why does Adrian give up the chances of a potentially lucrative career in International Relations to work in Africa for a low paying non-profit?

Today I plan on doing another solosode with Producer Paul on a subject I wrote on a blog a few months ago, which was titled “The Thrill of Not Knowing.” The ever increasing popular speaker and writer Jordan Petersen once asked the question “What is your friend: the things you know, or the things you don't know?”
I really like that question because I so strongly believe that it is “what I don’t know” that keeps fulfilled. I am an explorer, a wanderer, and an experimenter.
So you can see why I so resonate with Jordan Peterson’s quote above. My greatest friend is indeed “what I don’t know.”
I wonder, is this true for you as well? I have a feeling that curiosity and discovery are embedded in our DNA as human beings. How else can you explain the exponential growth in technology, the sciences and even the arts as we venture into that “galaxy far, far away”?
And then we have the all too familiar dialogue that opens the Star Trek series:
Space, the final frontier
These are the voyagers of the Starship Enterprise
Its five years mission
To explore strange new worlds
To seek out new life
And new civilizations
To boldly go where no man has gone before
Wow. The very statement gives me Goosebumps. And it has been true for just about as long as mankind has been around. As a species, we are wanderers and explorers seeking out strange new worlds.
So let’s bring in Producer Paul to talk a bit about this stuff.

Today we are in for a treat with my special guest Peter Ashworth. Bear with me as his introduction requires a bit more time than normal. That’s because Peter is far from normal.
Peter Ashworth is a 30-year veteran of creating companies and organizations. He is highly inspired every day to help others. He is currently the CEO and Founder of Live Possible | Fearless Life, an organization that helps people live their greatest potential.
Now this is really cool. Peter has just recently launched The Fearless Life Program, for those suffering from the debilitating effects of anxiety. As someone who has experienced this level of anxiety personally, I’m gonna be most interested in discovering more about Peter’s new program.
Did you know that Anxiety Disorders affect the lives of one in five people in North America? Peter’s Fearless Life program is a new, science-based, guided approach to killing anxiety. Fearless Life incorporates the amazing new breakthrough science of neuroplasticity, which we will talk about later.
Peter is also an Executive and Mindset Coach, which we will discover more in the show. An interesting note is that Peter played a role in the founding of Wells of Life, the charity that I am so deeply involved with.
Finally, Peter is a husband, father of 2 highly accomplished college-athletes, a fitness nut, an outdoor adventurer, and an artist.
So… before we run out of time why don’t we get Peter on the mic as we discuss, among other things, personal life design and strategies you might use to create your Next Chapter.
