Some loads are worth more than others.

Cal Mercer is a long-haul trucker who has spent enough nights alone on empty highways to know that strange things happen after midnight.

But this job is different.

Fifty thousand dollars. One overnight delivery. A sealed trailer. A destination called Blackwater Station.

And four simple rules:

Do not open the trailer.

Do not remain stopped for more than fifteen minutes.

Do not acknowledge anything you hear from the cargo.

Daniel Psycop didn't want jury duty. He didn't know the defendant. He didn't know the victim. And as far as he was concerned, this was just another murder that had absolutely nothing to do with him. The night shift was supposed to be quiet.

A few exhausted travelers. Burnt coffee. Fluorescent lights humming above an empty gas station on Highway 61.

Then Jerry closed the blinds.

He had only one warning for the new cashier:

If the man in the gray overcoat comes inside, do not speak to him. Do not look directly at him. Most importantly… do not acknowledge that he is there.

But rules have a way of sounding ridiculous until the moment they are broken.

When the last customer arrives carrying exact change, a bottle of water, and a box of matches, time begins slipping out of place. Minutes disappear. The highway falls silent. And the cashier discovers that some things cannot enter your life until you give them permission.
