  • 022 Stesha Cano

I sat down with Stesha to discuss the life of a singer songwriter, covers, and honesty.

    Notes:

    Stesha Bio:

She can tie you to a whipping post and shatter you into a thousand pieces. She’ll sing you a lullaby one moment and have you crying for mercy the next. She’s Supergirl, ready to take over the world. But please don’t put her on a pedestal – she’d rather be singing at an outdoor beer fest on a summer afternoon or in a dark, intimate bar in January. Stesha Cano is a musician for all seasons.

Easy to listen to, hard to define, singer-songwriter Stesha Cano has been making music in multiple genres since she stepped on the scene in 2005.  Whether she’s singing jazz standards or rhythm and blues or modern pop, Stesha breathes life into every syllable. She’ll take a song you’ve heard a hundred times and stretch it in new directions – maybe the beat has changed, or the inflection of a phrase, an edge that wasn’t there in the original. Her own compositions are as crisp as the stars and as deep as the ocean, memorable yet mysterious, calling you back for a second listen, and a third.

Stesha has released two CDs of original material: Like a Bee (2011), and Simple as Everything (2013) as well as a third CD of traditional American folk music: For Greyson- American Traditions (2016).  Stesha and her backup bands create a tight and playful sound, rife with improvisation.

  • 020 Times Like These

I chat it up with Mike from Times Like These!

    Notes:

Times Like These is a 4-piece pop rock band from Long Island, New York. Born from a local scene dominated by heavier acts, Mike, Eddie, Cody, and Zach found success in a more pop-influenced spin on pop punk, writing songs based on catchy hooks and infectious melodies. Their dynamic stage presence took them from their first backyard show in the summer of 2016 to headlining tours along the east coast and supporting acts such as Seaway, In Her Own Words, Story Untold, and Oh, Weatherly. Times Like These released their catchiest set of songs yet, an EP titled Take It or Leave It on May 5, and are continuing to tour, finding new fans wherever they play.

  • 018 Julianne Q and the Howl

    Notes:

Julianne Q & The Howl are fronted by the powerful vocals and creative mind of Julianne Q. Born from the spirit of Julianne Q & The Band, this new project is carving its own path in Chicago’s music scene. Their blend of groove-based, tightly-wound rock ‘n roll with the stunning voice of lead vocalist Julianne Q synthesizes influences including Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Jack White, and Greta Van Fleet. Raw emotional energy drives the evocative imagery in their lyrics, introducing a classic take on modern rock songwriting. With larger-than-life performances, Julianne Q & The Howl leave their audience with an unforgettable experience. Members Julianne Q, Jeff Mills (drums, vocals), Egan Franke (bass) and Chris Arwady (guitar) are excited to release their upcoming EP Sky Rider in October 2018.

That’s the best piece of advice Julianne Q has ever received. When Julianne was halfway through her senior of college, she had a choice to make: follow her heart and pursue music, or follow the theatre path she had laid out for herself through her college career.

Just like her favorite poem by Robert Frost, Julianne took the road less traveled upon, and it has made all the difference. She knew she would regret more not pursuing her music dream, and so she did just that. Through her music career, Julianne is going to inspire others to listen to that little voice inside of their hearts and live the lives they were meant to live.

Through soulful lyrics and powerful rock melodies, Julianne hopes you will hear her passion and drive in her music. But more importantly, she wants to inspire you to take that leap of faith and pursue your passion, just as she did.

  • 017 Castle Black

I Chat with Leigh from Castle Black. We talk about females in the music scene, crazy dreams, and even get a little political!!

    Notes:

Castle Black is a Brooklyn-based rock band, bringing a powerful and thunderous sound, full of hard-hitting jams, never sacrificing the hook.  Described as drawing from punk, post-punk, grunge, alternative and new wave, Castle Black defies the average rock genre.  Each song careens through an almost stream of consciousness depiction of life stories, social anthems and raw emotions.   With an intense live show, “impossible to tell was coming next, except that it was bound to be loud and hard and intense – and catchy" (NY Music Daily), Castle Black is a “reminder of what dominating guitar riffs, melodic basslines, booming drums and a powerful singer with rock prowess can do.”  (Subversive Zine)

“The trio seamlessly blend ’80s punk with the heyday of grunge across powerful tunes that roar with a gritty melody” (New Noise Magazine) and are “the kind of band you want to catch on the way up” (New York Music Daily), whose “sound is an inventive and stimulating mixture of genres,” making “Castle Black’s style one of a kind.” (Indie Rock Café)  NY Music Daily included their 2017 release Trapped Under All You Know on their Best of 2017 list, included the single "Broken Bright Star" on the Best Songs of 2017 list, and included their live show on their Best Shows of 2017 list.  Music Existence named the band among their Top Alternative Rock Picks of 2017.

Their fourth studio EP, the gods that adored you, will be released on June 29th, 2018, and includes mixes from Mark Plati (known for his work with David Bowie and Prince, among others).   The first single “Sierra” was released on June 15th, 2018, and has been widely adored, “taking to issue all of the tremors that are shaking the world today with the punk and tone strong voices can only make.”  (Uncivil Revolt)  They have released three other EPs:  Trapped Under All You Know (2017), Losing Forever (2016) and Find You There (2015), as well as several singles and official videos, in addition to a limited-edition run of a lathe-cut record for their single “Blind Curtain,” released on Leesta Val Sound Recordings.

Castle Black has played several popular festivals, including Mondo Fest, Northside Fest, NJ Shore Fest and Staten Island’s PrideFest.  The band was  selected through an audition process as one of a handful of female-fronted groups for Summer on the Hudson’s Make Some Noise Festival in 2017, which highlighted women musicians making an impact on the NYC music scene.   They have opened for several notable acts, including Richard Lloyd (of Television), Big D and the Kids Table and POD.  The actively touring band has had their songs played on both domestic and international radio shows, including Strawberry Tongue Radio, Banks Radio Australia, Vulcan Sound Radio, Rock Radio UK, Radio Free Brooklyn, Radio KSCR, Lionheart Radio UK, Lucky Star Radio, Radio Tatras International, Kane FM, Valley FM 89.5, 3rd Strike Radio, Riviera FM and many more.
