  • How to Escape the All-Or-Nothing Trap

In this episode of the Nutrition Edit Podcast, I tackle the pervasive issue of the all-or-nothing mentality, particularly prevalent among high-performing women striving for perfection in their health and personal lives.

This mindset, characterized by a binary approach to lifestyle changes—where one is either perfect or a failure—can lead to discouragement and burnout, often before any real results are achieved.

While this perfectionistic approach may be effective to some degree in the workplace, it is detrimental when it comes to health and wellness.

I’ll share some practical ways to overcome this mentality and achieve a more balanced, sustainable, and enjoyable approach to making lifestyle changes.

And you don’t have to go it alone! I invite anyone seeking further support to schedule a free coffee talk with me at joliverwellness.com.

Remember to subscribe for more episodes, and I look forward to connecting with you next week on The Nutrition Edit.

  • Rethinking Health and Self-Care

Welcome back to season four of the Nutrition Edit podcast! Despite a hoarse voice from a recent illness, I'm thrilled to dive into this season's content, which is all about empowering high-performing women to achieve optimal health and wellness.

This episode is a heartfelt reflection on my personal health journey, having faced illness three times this winter. It was a wake-up call that despite a healthy lifestyle, stress and burnout were taking a toll on my immune system. I realized that self-care isn't just about the work we love; it's about managing the stress from life's unexpected challenges.

I discuss the common misconceptions about health, particularly the idea that being healthy means restriction and that weight loss is the ultimate goal. However, I emphasize that excess weight is often a symptom of other imbalances, not the root cause of health issues. The conventional advice of "eat less, exercise more" is counterproductive, as it can lead to nutrient deficiencies and increased fat storage.

Instead, I advocate for a shift in perspective: viewing nutritious food and exercise as forms of self-respect and self-compassion. It's about supporting your body to return to balance, rather than forcing it to conform to unrealistic standards.

I also touch on the importance of reconnecting with nature for overall well-being, citing a study that shows the vast benefits of engaging with the natural environment on mental, physical, and cognitive health.

I encourage you to prioritize your health by reframing your mindset around self-care, embracing the process of change, and avoiding the comparison trap. Remember, your body is your ally, and nurturing it should be a top priority.

If you found this episode insightful, please subscribe, leave a review, and share it with friends. Your health is a worthy investment, and together, we can redefine what it means to be truly healthy.

  • If I Knew Then… Time Flies, Start Now

In this episode, I reflect on the perception of time and how it relates to pursuing your health and fitness goals. It’s important to be patient and stay consistent on your health journey and understand that progress doesn’t happen overnight but it does happen by having the right knowledge and support.

You don’t have to do this alone, and in this episode I talk a little about how as women especially, we feel like we have to figure everything out on our own when it comes to our health and that is simply not true.

I talk about some key steps to prioritize health, including self-care, setting boundaries, and cultivating gratitude for your body. I also share the value of investing in your health and discuss my 6 Pillars of Wellness approach.

Some key takeaways for this episode:

    • Patience and consistency are key in achieving health and fitness goals.
    • Seeking help and support can make your health journey much easier and more enjoyable.
    • Prioritize self-care, set healthy boundaries, and cultivate gratitude for your body.
    • Investing in your health is an investment in your future.

  • When Good Enough is Enough - Eating Out, Travel and The 1 of 3 Rule

In this episode, I’m sharing some tips for making good food choices when eating out or traveling, especially during the holiday season.

Life will never be totally predictable and it’s easy to get discouraged or thrown off when you’re out of your routine and normal environment. Learning to successfully navigate this will help you stay consistent with your healthy choices and avoid feeling deprived.

The key takeaway is not to expect yourself to make progress while your circumstances aren’t ideal. It’s ok to maintain or be in a holding pattern sometimes, and by making “good enough” choices, you can avoid going completely off the rails.

Doors are now open for Body Liberation Together, my 12-week mindset and metabolism intensive, designed to help you shake off the holiday season funk, reset your intentions, and re-establish healthy, sustainable habits so you can start the new year feeling like your best self.

  • Psilocybin for Women with Jennifer Chesak

Joining me today is Jennifer Chesak, the author of The Psilocybin Handbook for Women.

Jennifer is an award-winning freelance science and medical journalist, editor, and fact-checker, and her work has appeared in several national publications, including the Washington Post. Chesak earned her master of science in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. She currently teaches in the journalism and publishing programs at Belmont University, leads various workshops at the literary nonprofit The Porch, and serves as the managing editor for the literary magazine SHIFT.

Today we’re talking about the use of psilocybin, a psychedelic plant medicine, and its potential benefits.

While psilocybin has potential benefits for everyone, today we’re diving into the specific ways in which it may be helpful for women including regulating our stress and trauma response, helping with depression and anxiety, facilitating healing and behavior change, and promoting hormone health in every stage of life.

Psychedelics and psychedelic assisted therapy are somewhat controversial, but they’re a subject that I’ve been curious about and wanting to cover for a long time, and I couldn’t ask for a better expert to talk with about it.

Jen dispels some of the common myths and fears around psilocybin and educates us on how it can be used safely and effectively.

Please be aware that psilocybin is a schedule one drug and is still federally illegal. However, it has been legalized on a state level in CO and OR, and is currently in the works in other states. It is illegal but decriminalized in Washington DC and Ann Arbor, MI.

If you decide to pursue psychedelic assisted therapy, it is imperative that you do thorough research on who you work with beforehand. I’ve included several resources below and Jennifer also includes detailed information on safety in the book.

  • Craniopathy for Lasting Pain Relief with Dr. Jason Scoppa

After several sports injuries I lived with chronic neck and back pain for years, and I tried all kinds of treatments including massage, Rolphing, physical therapy, and traditional chiropractic care. These helped to some degree, but the benefits were always pretty short-lived.

Thankfully through my previous clinic job I got turned on to Craniopoathy, and connected with Dr. Scoppa. It sounds cliché, but he has truly changed my life so I want to introduce his work to all of you.
