My guest today is one of my teachers and mentors, Clinical Nutritionist and Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, Tom Malterre.
Tom Malterre has been involved in nutritional sciences since he was a 10 year old. Since then, he has attained 2 nutritional science degrees, educated health care practitioners around the world on Functional Medicine and nutritional biochemistry, written the best-selling "The Elimination Diet" book, and has worked for some of the most prestigious supplement and lab companies in the Functional Medicine community.
Through his work experience as an educator and his 18+ years in clinical practice, Tom has been exposed to nutrient and genetic analysis testing results of both his clients and the doctors and healthcare practitioners he instructs. As a result, Tom has gathered unique insights into the actual chemistry behind multiple diseases and health conditions. He has applied these findings to the field of migraines and is now helping hundreds of migraine sufferers find relief through his new program called The Migraine Relief Method™.
In this episode I talk with Tom about the difference between severe headaches and migraines, common causes and treatments for migraines, and the dangers of using acetaminophen for pain relief. We also dive into the lifestyle and nutrition interventions you can use to combat migraines, including addressing food intolerances and nutrient deficiencies.

Today I’m welcoming back Dr. Michelle Leary. Dr. Leary is a Functional Medicine Physician and the Director of Functional Medicine at Vida Integrated Health.
Her specialties include primary care, sexual and hormonal health, fertility, and anti-aging medicine for both men and women.
Dr. Leary began her early career in cardiac rehab prior to receiving her doctorate from Bastyr University. In 2016 she was the first naturopathic physician ever to be selected for a fellowship in multiple sclerosis management through the National MS Society.
She has also completed training at the Institute of Women’s Health, American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), and the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) in areas of sexology, hormone management, anti-aging medicine, and metabolic weight-loss.
In addition to her clinical role, Dr. Leary is the owner and creator of PowerSexBeauty.com, a lifestyle brand and blog dedicated to women who want to optimize their health, invigorate their sexual energy, and live beautifully from the inside out.
At the core of her approach to medicine is supporting her patients’ mental, emotional, and spiritual health. So today I’m talking with Dr. Leary about attachment theory and how we can use it to improve our relationships with ourselves, with others and even with food.
There’s a lot of buzz on social media about attachment theory, so I wanted to learn more about it and how we can apply it to our lives in practical ways. I learned a ton in this episode, and I hope you’ll enjoy my interview with Dr. Michelle Leary as much as I did!

Today I’m excited to welcome Mira Dessy, The Ingredient Guru.
A holistic nutrition professional, author, and popular public speaker, she knows that it's not just what you eat, but what's in what you eat. Her work focuses on helping people find bio-individual solutions for chronic health issues and creating pantry preparedness through her online community The Kitchen Table.
Mira is a member of the National Association of Nutrition Professionals, the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior, the American Nutrition Association, and the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. Additionally, she is on the Board of Directors for the American Holistic Health Association and is a member of the Professional Advisory Board for the Turner Syndrome Society.
In this episode we’ll be talking about allulose, the hot new sweetener on the market that’s being used in numerous keto and low sugar products. Allulose is getting lots of press and is even being promoted by well respected doctors and nutrition experts. But is it actually good for us? Mira uncovers the truth behind this ingredient and the detrimental effects it can have on our health and metabolism.
Where to find Mira:
https://theingredientguru.com/

Take Mira’s First Aid Preparedness Seminar!
Because the best time to prepare for an emergency is before there is one.
https://thekitchentable.thinkific.com/courses/TKT-first-aid-preparedness-seminar
Studies mentioned:
From Mira: I'd like to point out that studies claiming a certain amount is "safe" usually fail to take into account the fact that no one is keeping track of how much you're eating. If you're getting something in a number of different products throughout the day it's easy to go far past the tolerable amount.
This one has a positive slant for allulose however I'd like to point out that they specifically mention that it alters the microbiome - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32013116/ - Fecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production analysis revealed that ALL induced elevated total SCFA production compared to the other groups. Also, ALL supplement induced the change in the microbial community
https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/british-journal-of-nutrition/article/allulose-in-human-diet-the-knowns-and-the-unknowns/74020152A1262DF4D7942A4DB54B6E37
- in vitro studies have shown that certain bacteria such as Klebsiella pneumonia are able to utilise allulose as a substrate. This finding has been a subject of concern, since Klebsiella pneumoniae represents an opportunistic human pathogen.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6315886/pdf/nutrients-10-02010.pdf
- A correlation analysis of the GI tolerance test for D-allulose and sugar revealed significantly higher frequencies of symptoms of diarrhea (p = 0.004), abdominal distention (p = 0.039), and abdominal pain (p = 0.031) after D-allulose intake. Increasing the total daily D-allulose intake gradually to 1.0 g/kg·BW for regular ingestion resulted in incidences of severe nausea, abdominal pain, headache, anorexia, and diarrheal symptoms.

In this episode, I dive into my ADHD diagnosis, and why I decided to seek help.
For me it was important to seek a diagnosis to understand how my brain works and to find support for ADHD-related challenges. It wasn't about taking medication but about self-awareness and self-improvement. If you suspect you have ADHD, I highly encourage you to find a qualified professional to support you.
In this episode I also dive in to some interesting statistics about females with ADHD, including the higher likelihood of having eating disorders, addictive behaviors, depression, anxiety, and self-judgment. ADHD also presents very differently in girls and women than it does with males, and we are more often diagnosed with inattentive type which is not as easily recognized.
I'll be sharing the lifestyle and nutrition strategies I use for managing my symptoms, including quality sleep, hydration, exercise, connecting with nature, and the specific foods to support cognitive function and gut health.
In celebration of a big milestone birthday and 10 years in practice, I'm offering specials on all my 1:1 coaching packages* and DIY programs, now thru October 31, 2023.
Schedule a free 30-minute Coffee Talk and we'll figure out the best fit for your goals, time and budget. Here are the details:
*The only thing not included in this is my Body Liberation Together group program in January, since that is already a big savings compared to my 1:1 packages.
**You can start the DIY programs anytime you like, and you'll have lifetime access to the program you choose as well as the option to join my future live Reboot groups.

In this final episode of season 2, I’m talking about a belief that many people struggle with, women especially. I've had so many clients tell me over the years that they struggle to make lasting changes in their health and fitness because deep down they don't really believe they deserve to take good care of themselves. They feel that somehow they are less worthy than others to feel great or to enjoy their bodies. This belief is complex and nuanced, but there are some common roots and manifestations that I’m touching on today.
As women, we are under immense pressure to excel in every area of life, including career, motherhood, relationships, and appearance. I mean, can we talk about America Ferrera's monologue in Barbie??? However, prioritizing self-care is often stigmatized as being selfish or high maintenance. We need to start making the choices that are right for us and that allow us to live the lives we dream of, regardless of others’ opinions about it.
So many of us sacrifice our wellbeing in an effort to keep everyone else happy, but we just end up burnt out and resentful. We can start to break that cycle by changing our mindset around prioritizing our needs, and by gradually learning to treat our bodies with care and respect, even if it makes others uncomfortable. You deserve love, nurturing, and nourishment as much as anyone on this planet, and in this episode I’m reminding you of that and giving you some tools to help you start believing it for yourself.

Today I’m talking with Dr. Emily Passic about semaglutide, also know as Ozempic of Wegovy. I had a ton of questions and concerns about it and I’m sure you do too, so I wanted to bring on an expert who really understands how this drug should and shouldn’t be used, who it is and is not for, and can answer all our burning questions.
Dr. Emily Passic, ND, MsAy. Dr. Passic is board certified in Naturopathic Medicine and holds a Masters in Ayurvedic Science from Bastyr University and has been practicing since 2016. She works at an integrative pediatric and family practice in Kirkland, WA. She has spent time in India learning from some of the top Ayurvedic doctors and incorporates multiple modalities for treating chronic conditions. Her passions include cardiometabolic health, longevity medicine, mold and mycotoxin illness, full body detoxification, chronic infections, chronic pain and female hormones. She utilizes dietary intervention, supplement management, lifestyle modifications and peptide therapy. Please note her medical license is only in Washington state and she cannot prescribe outside the state.
Dr. Passic owns and operates a nonprofit organization called Allow Healing Nonprofit. These consultations are virtual visits only (no in-person option). www.emilypassic.weebly.com
She also sees patients in person at Centered in Wellness, a concierge practice in Kirkland, WA. www.centeredinwellness.com
Some important notes on semaglutide: Semaglutide can be a very safe and effective tool in weight loss if done correctly. Patients should be doing appropriate detoxification as losing fat can cause toxins to circulate which can be very damaging to the body and brain. If managed properly, the benefits of semaglutide go beyond weight loss and include improved cardiac health, neuroprotection and decreased GI inflammation. Semaglutide is not for those with low body weight, children and those with current or history of thyroid cancer or an endocrine condition called MEN(2).
