David Peel and David Lannan were both busking singer-songwriters. The former went around New York with his backing band, The Lower East Side, performing "drinking songs for stoners" while the latter serenaded local San Franciscians with traditional and self-penned folk songs. Both connected with their ever changing crowd. while also sometimes pissing off others, and these records showcase both.

Harry Partch and Wendy Carlos are two artists who saw the possibilities of using notes and scales that Western listeners weren't attuned to, and that other cultures had been using for centuries. Here's two records that came out of those endeavors.

"New Age" music is a broad and vaguely-defined genre of many sounds and styles from the '60's onward, emulating the philosophies of the New Age movement. Though the music under this label has no singular sound, one shared trait is the use of sound for the purpose of healing. The records I chose for this episode are some of the earliest examples of such purpose.

“New Weird America” was a label used to describe an eccentric group of burgeoning psych-folk and rock artists in the 2000’s. Here’s a few examples along the wide spectrum of sound these musicians experimented within, from woodland folkiness to lo-fi drone-jams.

Southern California exported its own brand of weirdness in the late 1960's and early 1970's. For every band that became a huge success, like Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead, there are other groups who performed for a short time, made their statement and then disappeared or disbanded. From cease and desist letters from the Salvation Army to exploding records, here's a few albums I have from bands that just scrape the surface of how "far-out" those times were.
