Hi, welcome to the online marketing show, this is Joey Bushnell. And welcome to the next episode of the online marketing club mini-series.
We’re currently exploring my top 9 ways to drive traffic which are SEO, Search advertising, Display advertising, content marketing, organic social media traffic, social advertising, email advertising, affiliate traffic and retargeting. In this episode we will be looking at Social Advertising.
What is Social Advertising?
Social advertising is paying to get your social media messages seen, organic traffic is great but newsfeeds are noisy and competitive. Using social ads, you far more likely to get seen. It’s display advertising and native advertising meets social media. You can buy traditional display type adverts on Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube, these are the ads which are clearly ads and look like ads. The main social networks to buy native ads on would include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Instragram, these are the ads where your ad doesn’t necessarily look like an ad, it blends in with the other social posts.
Why is Social Media Advertising good?
Well like I explained in the last episode social media is where everyone is. Social media is a great way to connect with your target audience where they hang out most. People are spending insane amounts of time there. If you want to get in front of your target audience, then you need to go where they hangout every day.
It’s fast, just like display ads and search ads, this is instant traffic and it’s super targeted, it’s based on location, interests, behaviour, age, device, gender, language and there are load of other targeting filters too.
What’s bad about Social Advertising?
The biggest complaint I hear is that some people resent having to pay for social media traffic, they think it should be free. I love free traffic too but look nothing should be free, you’ve got no divine right, the social networks don’t charge us to use their sites and they need to monetize somehow, they don’t owe anyone free traffic. The way I look at it is it comes down to ROI and nothing else, did it make more money than you spent or not? If it’s positive ROI then why would you care whether it was free or not?
So yes, it’s not free but that doesn’t make it bad, if you think that makes it bad, and you also run a business, I highly suggest you change that mindset. If it gives you a positive return then you should be willing to invest.
Who is Social Advertising for?
Social advertising suits a diverse range of businesses, there are not many business types that are not suited to social advertising in my opinion.
How to do Social Advertising?
First, set up your advertising accounts on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram or Pinterest, wherever you plan on advertising.
For me the real biggy is Facebook, almost everyone should try Facebook ads. They will let you do traditional display ads shown in the right hand side of their site in the column which shows adverts or they will let you do native ads which show in the newsfeeds. Remember if you do a display kind of advert then you can and should make it look like a blatant ad. Newsfeed ads can be look like an blatant ads, those definitely work too or you can go a bit more native, a bit more subtle, it really depends on the context of what your trying to achieve with your ad and where you are sending the traffic to. You want to make sure your image and headline captures attention. You want to make sure you get your targeting right, that’s crucial, narrow down on your target audience and you’re ready to go. You can even target your own email list using their custom audience tool, so that the people who know, like and trust you already see you on their social feeds as well as in their inboxes. Or use look a like audiences to show ads to people similar to the people on your list. There are lots, lot’s more to Facebook ads, so many options that like I said most business have something to gain.
Twitter is fast becoming a favourite of mine, they used to be quite high barrier to entry and only for big businesses with huge budgets but over the last year or so they’ve opened it right up to the small business too and they keep on producing new advertising products all the time. You can pay for promoted accounts so people follow you, you can pay for promoted tweets so that people read your tweets and click your links, you can pay for promoted trends so your brand appears popular and relevant and shown in peoples trending topics. Again you target by geography, gender, interest, device, or show ads to people similar to those who follow you, a bit like Facebooks like a like audiences as well as the ability to show ads to your email list like Facebooks custom audiences but over at Twitter they are called tailored audiences.
Then we have LinkedIn, with LinkedIn you can do traditional adverts which show on their site and are blatant ads but you can also now do newsfeed type ads, these are called sponsored updates. You can do text/image ads or even just video ads. You’ve got all the usual targeting parameters as well as some new business related ones like positions within a company, job title, company size, making it great for business types including B2B. The only drawback is clicks aren’t cheap, $2 minimum but remember it’s all about ROI.
Ads which show on YouTube are bought through your Google adwords account. Again there’s a whole load of different ad types here, the main ones would include the display network type ads which show banner ads on their site and in some videos. You can also promote your YouTube account or get your YouTube videos featured in the related videos section. Then there’s trueview ads, a short video message which shows before the intended video, people can skip these ads if they don’t want to watch them but plenty of people will watch them and respond.
In fact, on the topic of social media and google adwords there’s even an ad type which relates to google plus. You can turn your Google plus updates into adverts which show on google display network so these ads do not show on Google Plus itself but it’s a way of building your audience on Google plus by advertising to people using the wider web.
Then there’s Instagram where you can do native style sponsored photos and videos and there’s even Pinterest ads that are on the cusp of being released to the public where you can again buy native ads called promoted pins. That’s literally right around the corner at the time of recording this in May, 2014, if you’re listening to this much after that time then chances are they are already here.
There’s so many options and opportunities to get in front of our target audiences when they are using social media. If you would like to learn how to create adverts that get clicked, how to target your exact audience, how to bid for cheaper clicks to give you the best chance of ROI, then take a look into the online marketing club, it will show you all those things.
