On this episode of the podcast, we spoke with Nia Alexander.
Nia is a senior at Florida State University, earning her BFA in acting. She’s been involved with theater since 6th grade and has recently found a passion for modeling.
Her experiences as both actor and model have pushed her towards becoming a creative director – someone who oversees creative projects and deals with many different mediums at once. Nia doesn’t always have to be in the spotlight, as she enjoys watching her ideas come to life more than acting.
Nia has encountered tokenism in the modeling world and the wider world in general. She gets frustrated when she feels like she simply checks a box for someone’s agenda, such as being the only black person in her BFA Acting and Musical Theater class.
We talk with Nia more about how race, in her opinion, is a social construct. People view her as “black” because that’s what they’ve been told to do. Nia shares a song that brings her hope called, Mango by Kamauu in which the chorus sums up her feelings toward others – “because I love you”.
