[TESSA] Joyce is back! That funny lady with so much insight was a guest in 2022. And that humorous episode has become a listener favorite. For 2023, Joyce is just right for our first guest in our new Friendship Series.

Joyce Saltman is a Professor Emeritus of Special Education at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, CT. She chose to receive her doctoral degree from Columbia because she loved the color of their doctoral gown.

It was no small feat that she was able to persuade her mentor to allow her to write her dissertation on “Humor in Adult Learning.”

Joyce also holds four graduate degrees in the fields of Special Education and Counseling. Joyce’s innovative teaching style has led to the development of a graduate course entitled. “The Enhancement of Learning Through Humor,” as well as a summer institute called, “Healing, Education Laughter and Play (HELP).”

Her experience in the areas of education, therapy, and comedy has provided an outstanding background for her research on “The Therapeutic Value of Laughter.” Since 1983, when Joyce began lecturing on “Laughter,” she has been interviewed by national radio and TV. Her dynamic seminars and articles, always peppered with humor, address such topics as dealing with difficult people, laughter as therapy, parenting, and relationships. Her goal is to enlighten, educate, and entertain while the audience laughs. Joyce has been speaking on “Laughter” and related uplifting topics since 1983, and hopes to be able to die laughing – but not too soon!!!

Joyce is the 2015 recipient of the Doug Fletcher Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for the Applied and Therapeutic Humor (AATH). She also is the first winner of the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Academy for Continuing Education, (ACE) Boynton Beach, FL, as well as the 2015 First prize joke-telling award from the International Society for Humor Studies (ISHS).

As a result of her speaking engagements, she has so far been able to donate over one million dollars to her favorite various charities. Intermittently referred to as the “Guru of Laughter,” and “The Chubby Broad from Brooklyn, Joyce helps people lighten up wherever she goes!

Our conversation brings me back to my days at The University of Florida with so many Georgian friends and that beautiful southern twang that is so soft and delightful.

It’s a truth. C.c. puts up a truth perceived with a quick insight, almost like intuition that we need to practice having. She started younger, but this teaching of looking at each setback as a way to refine our path and our dreams and what is the universe trying to teach us. And it seems so simple, but those things are the hardest things. I love how she talked about each child, her own adult kids, and how each of them has her own ways to adapt. And I really love her idea of refinement and resetting.

[C.c.elaine] My whole life crumbled. I went through a whole life shakeup, and I ended up moving in with my brother to start saving for us to move here to Atlanta. And he helped me take care of my kids. It was the scene of my mom dying and my whole life falling apart. Aside from that, you know, my marriage, I had to give up my business. I lost my home all in the same year. That is such a hard place to be in, to feel all alone.

My hope is that I can help others get to a place of feeling supported and comforted even when they actually are alone in their journeys. And the other big piece is having dreams and purpose. That’s another reason why people feel so much despair is not having any purpose in their lives. And a lot of people don’t know how to find purpose. And that’s another aspect to my intuitive living work, to help people activate their dreams and then to be able to see the signs and clues and guidance from nature and the universe as they move along to achieve their dreams.

Vicki is a longtime award-winning journalist at a San Francisco Bay Area newspaper, author of Not Too Old for That: How Women are Changing the Story of Aging (Rowman & Littlefield, April 2022) and coauthor of The New I Do: Reshaping Marriage for Skeptics, Realists and Rebels (Seal Press, 2014), named a Best Book of 2014 by PopSugar. Not Too Old for That: How Women are Changing the Story of Aging

Helps women break through the tired and hurtful stereotypes of aging to better reflect who they are, how they live, and what they want as they age.

Who hasn’t heard the stereotypes about women of a “certain age?” That’s the age when women become invisible, irrelevant, undesirable, asexual, unhinged, dried-up, hormonal messes. It’s when women quickly slide into fragility and become forgetful, passive, weak, feeble, debilitated, disabled, dependent, and depressed. Or so the story goes. Not only are those outdated narratives sexist and ageist, they are also damaging to women’s physical, emotional, financial, romantic, and sexual health. It’s time to change them.

In Not Too Old for That, Vicki Larson helps change the narrative about being a woman at midlife and older. She questions what we’ve been told aging would be like and encourages us to instead ask ourselves, what do we want it to be like, and how can we get there? The key is to be curious, open-minded, and intentional about the ways we are becoming our future selves.We have an opportunity to create new narratives of aging as a woman, ones that value women at all stages of life, not just youth, and it starts with us. Once the stereotypes that have held women back are broken down, women can move past them and rather than feel helpless as the years add up, they can discover and tap into just how much agency they have. Not only will this book help to create a less-ageist, less-sexist, more-inclusive future, it will release our daughters and all young women from a similar future.
