The Open Nesters

[Tessa] We have a woman of wisdom with us this week. And more than that: a woman of wisdom who opens up her heart to us. It is such an honor to witness the deep knowledge of a 79-year-old woman. I named this episode “Goddess Wisdom” for a reason, for she is not only wise about the ways of the world and the ways of the heart, she has first-hand experience with polyamory. In fact, we found each other on a polyamorous Facebook group. Madeleine has been married to the same man for over 50 years.

Madeleine is more sexual than her husband. And, in fact, her husband decided that he did not want to participate in sexuality with Madeleine. Yet he wanted to continue to have sex with other women. A deep love remained, but the sexual desire was just not there. That was a time of crisis as you can imagine. Madeline says, “she would rather be told the truth than a lie.” And they were able to deal with this development as a team.

I am sure you will enjoy listening to our conversation to see where that led Madeleine Sklar since that time.

Although adopted at birth by a “good” family, Unfortunately my nature and that of my adoptive mother, were total opposites. We were a square wagon wheel clunking awkwardly along point, to point in our jagged clumsy relationship whose mismatch left me always searching for connection to a greater Whole.

Coming from a Jewish birth mother I needed to belong to the Jewish people. However the Jewish religion was very patriarchal, like all religions I observed in my youth. Later, studying the Tarot in my twenties, aroused curiosity to explore he Hebrew Alphabet.

Even though both the Papus and Rider Waite writings on the Hebrew Aleph-Bet or alphabet, in relation to the Tarot are full of misinformation, my awakened curiosity led me to reading on the Hebrew letter/numerals, Kabbalah (especially, “On the Kabbalah” by Gershom Sholom) and the ancient Goddess centered cultures where the Aleph-Bet originated.

I learned that the roots of the Hebrew Alphabet originated in ancient Goddess cultures and so even the Hebrew Aleph-Bet or alphabet, is Feminine as is the word “Aleph-Bet” and Torah which like Shekinah, the Holy Feminine Presence, is a Feminine name of God. In Genesis 1, in the Holy Bible, The Holy One creates Male and Female “in Our image”. Also the Holy Name, יהןה ends with the letter, Heh, a letter usually indicating a feminine word in Hebrew.

Later, I completed my Master’s in interdisciplinary studies Psychology Anthropology and Sociology, with a focus on Women’s Issues. In My thesis, “Healing The Mother-Daughter Wound,” I developed my initial program to Spiritually, Culturally, and Personally, heal our most important primary relationship and through that healing, heal our relationship to our self, our partners, our children.

Over the years, as well as my academic training in working with relationships, I have a lot of personal learning, growth and experience deep and fulfilling both traditional and non-traditional relationships.

Following the devastation and desperation I experienced following the “failure” of my first marriage, and my subsequent revelation that since I was alone and might be alone forever, my only choice was: to be happy alone, or unhappy alone. Once I chose to be happy alone. I was able to break free from my victimhood to create my own happiness. Ironically, once I took take charge of my own happiness, and my cup was no longer filled with longing, there was room for love to pour in.

I have a life time of experience exploring and working with relationships, including my own: I have by now, spent over 50 years with the love of my life. It has not always been easy. Love is a process not a fixed state. It involves, creativity, learning, growing, adapting, and humor as you work through changes and challenges. In our constantly evolving, loving, extended family we raised a boy and girl, into amazing healthy loving adults. And now I feel I can actually speak not only from my years of training as I developed a kaleidoscope of skills, I can speak from personal experience.

I’ve learned that as you heal your childhood wounds, and particularly your maternal wounding, you become a better, parent to yourself, and your relationships with your children, partners and even friends becomes healthier and more fulfilling.

Meet Dan Sivils

My professional story began in 1992 with earning my law degree and becoming an attorney in Missouri. I enjoyed my work and excelled at what I did because of my ability to listen, understand, communicate, and formulate solutions. As a lawyer I balanced seeing the big picture and understanding the nuance of complex factors and moving pieces while being able to zero in on specific pieces of information that can make or break a case.

While managing my law career, I was introduced to the world of personal development work. Everything I learned and practiced in this arena complemented my work as a lawyer and allowed me to grow into my strengths, while getting to know myself more deeply. Because this work was so life changing for me, I decided to pursue coaching and teaching others in addition to my legal practice. Having the opportunity to coach others on that journey is an honor and a gift for which I am grateful.

I love what I do as a coach. Law will always be invigorating, but personal development work fulfills me in a unique way. For decades, I have remained committed to continual learning for my life with my own emotional, mental, and spiritual intelligence.

While my coaching work is often done via Zoom, I also lead outdoor retreats. I love being in nature for the beauty and for the presence, connection, peace, and clarity it provides. I have been trained in leading vision quests, personal development retreats and spiritually seeking wilderness trips. I bring added experience from my training as a wilderness first responder, and wilderness guide received from the world renowned National Outdoor Leadership School and Wilderness Medical Institute.

When I’m not working, I am creating fun, making people laugh, having adventure, or being totally introverted, alone, and loving it.

[Tessa] I am very excited to share this interview with you today with Dr. Ellen Albertson. Ellen is post-divorce with adult children. She is an Open Nester who is having the “time of her life,” even though she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully it is in remission!

[Tessa] Mark’s life is an inspiration. And his stories from his life will touch your heart.

Mark started a non-profit later in life that has most likely reached over a million people in need across the world. His mission in life has kept him vital, motivated, and full of fire. Born and bred in Brooklyn, a graduate of the University of Buffalo, Mark found his happiness as a math teacher in the NYC area. His work with children in New York would seem to be enough. As Amir said, “Mark is an educator, rather than a teacher.”

Mark is 77 years old. In so many ways he is in the prime of his life right now. And it’s his good work that is keeping him young even though his wife has passed away. He founded the USACF after he “retired” from teaching. This is an organization that has dominated his life since 2001.

USACF | US-AFRICA CHILDREN’S FELLOWSHIP

USACF is a New York, NY US based non-profit.  (501c3, EIN: 55-0875394 |  Bridge Number: 6803296339).

In 2003, Mark Grashow and Sheri Saltzberg journeyed to Lasuka, Zambia to attend a friend’s wedding. Following the wedding, they traveled to Zimbabwe’s second city, Bulawayo where their son, Alexander Grashow, had done development work in partnership with Zimbabwe’s Organization of Rural Associations for Progress (ORAP).  During a tour of several rural schools Mark and Sheri were struck by the need. The schools had very little. There were no libraries, no textbooks, no school supplies and no sports equipment. Some students lacked shoes and warm clothes for the winter.

USACF’s first container was shipped from Brooklyn in 2005. ORAP distributed the contents and soon found significant positive impacts at its 35 schools.  The program quickly expanded.  More and more containers were shipped and the number of targeted schools grew to 75 and then to 175.  By 2018, 290 Zimbabwean schools were receiving donations. The Zimbabwe model was so successful that USACF expanded into Ghana and Tanzania. In Ghana, we partnered with the National Partnership of Children’s Trust and The Mothers of Africa. The Ghana partnership was hugely successful and is still flourishing. The Tanzanian program ran for three years and served 38 schools. The Tanzanian program was terminated after three shipments because of the lack of a strong partner on the ground.

When the program ended in Tanzania, USACF expanded its program into South Africa. In 2010, USACF formed a partnership with two NGOs in South Africa. The first was Sharing to Learn, which supports schools in Makuleke, South Africa. The second was Equal Education, operating out of Cape Town, which received their first container in 2012.

Hardly a week goes by without an NGO reaching out to USACF for advice or a request for a new partnership. USACF‘s door is always open and we are always ready to make the world a little better place for its children.

[Tessa] Our fourth entry in this Sensuality, Sexuality and Aging Month on The Open Nesters Podcast. From our conversation:

[Dr. Tepper] You don’t have to break your neck to be a great lover, but you could learn a lot from somebody who has.

So when you’re forced to kind of examine your sexual life and rebuild it and not to be so genitally focused… it opens up a wide world of possibilities. What was important for a peak sexual experience that I found for my research, well over 20 years ago, is the concept of trust and safety. When someone was with somebody that they trusted and they felt safe with, that opened them up.

They were able to be vulnerable to experiences. And that led to a feeling of connectedness and that connectedness led to a sense of pleasure and even orgasm for people who had not experienced orgasm before.

If we take sex too seriously – you know, “I couldn’t get it up. I couldn’t keep it up. I couldn’t ejaculate !!”

Then we start feeling like a failure, and then this becomes a negative thing and something we avoid. When couples over 50 stop having sex, it’s generally because the guy has experienced sexual erectile dysfunction. And he begins to lose his confidence and avoid sex. And then that creates a dynamic, you know, where the partner thinks it’s something with them. And then the sex life slowly just fades.

[Tessa] Our second entry in this Sensuality, Sexuality and Aging Month on The Open Nesters.

The key phrase of this episode is, in Anne’s words, “Vulnerability is the solar power of eroticism and is especially the solar power of kink.”

Anne and Dan are in a polyamorous long-distance relationship (Boulder – Chicago). They see each other about every six months. This makes life full of longing. Desire. And a sense of wanting something that may or may not happen. Before their cherished time together one of their rituals is for Anne to verbally ask Dan, “Will you have sex with me?” A strange question one might think. After all it has been six weeks and they are lovers.

Yet this simple question turns Anne all “squirmy” and if Dan says yes, she blushes with happiness. For highly sophisticated adults in “Act III” of life, their erotic blueprint is coded again with small acts like this one.
