A veteran of provincial politics, Michel Gauthier joined the wave of Bloc Quebecois who were elected into Parliament in 1993. By 1996, he was the leader of the party and the leader of the Official Opposition but only stayed in for a year. Eventually, he would leave the Bloc and support the Conservative Party.
