Just before Christmas, Elections BC released the results of British Columbia’s third referendum on electoral reform. After months of predictions that the race would be close, it was anything but: voters voted 61% to 39% to stick with our current First Past The Post system.
It was a landslide, which has led to a lot of finger pointing and back pedaling among proportional representation supporters, including John Horgan, David Eby and Andrew Weaver.
So what happened?
Kent Verge was the campaign manager for the No Proportional Representation Society of BC, the group that led the winning fight against electoral reform. Kent joined Rick Cluff via Skype from Victoria.
B.C. just went through a referendum on electoral reform, and it looks like the City of Vancouver might be next. New Mayor Kennedy Stewart is talking about moving Vancouver from its current at-large system of electing City Council – in favour of wards, where councillors are elected to represent specific neighbourhoods.
Most other large Canadian cities use wards, but Vancouver has rejected the idea several times over the years. Is anything different today?
George Affleck is the president and CEO of Curve Communications, and a former two-term Vancouver City Councillor. George joined Rick Cluff in studio.
