The Organic View

Recently, an American dentist paid $50,000 to shoot and kill a lion in Africa. This lion was well-known and beloved by tourists and locals in Zimbabwe. Although the world was outraged, what this man did was perfectly legal. Although groups like LionAid and White Lion Trust, amongst others have been educating the world about the dwindling global lion population, they are still not a protected species.

In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to Stephen Travis, President of Protecting African Lions.org will talk about efforts to globally ban canned hunting. Stay tuned.

Industry continues to claim neonicotinoids have little to no impact on honeybees but there are numerous studies, especially this particular study which prove the devastating impact. The research conducted by Dr. Randolf Menzel is solid proof that neonicotinoids do interfere with specific components of navigation in honeybees. This research was published almost two years ago and has also never been negated. Why? It's simple. The research is concrete. For our listeners that are unfamiliar with the work of Dr. Randolf Menzel, here is the original interview.

In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to Neurobiologist and Professor Emeritus, at the Free University of Berlin, Dr. Randolf Menzel about his research titled, Neonicotinoids Interfere with Specific Components of Navigation in Honeybees. Dr. Menzel pioneered the honeybee as a model system in neuroscience with respect to color vision, olfaction, learning, and memory. Combining levels of analysis from natural behavior to single neurons, he traced perceptual and cognitive capacities to their neural and cellular substrates. He established the first evidence for the role of the insect mushroom body in memory formation and characterized the cellular and neural correlates of different phases of memory. His latest research explores the use of three neonicotinoids, (neonicotinoids, imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiacloprid) and their impact on honeybee navigation. Stay tuned!

Beekeepers are like full time guardians of the honeybees they care for. One of the greatest dangers to honeybees is chemical exposure. According to Duke Energy, herbicide use is a standard practice used by electric utilities and others, including agricultural and landscape management companies, state departments of transportation, railroads, forest services, the military, municipalities, golf courses, airports, schools and universities, and property owners. They apply these chemicals because overgrown vegetation near power lines and equipment can pose safety hazards and lead to power outages. So, what can you do if you are a beekeeper and receive notification that a chemical application will be administered near your bees?  In this special series called “The Neonicotinoid View”, which is produced by The Organic View Radio Show, host June Stoyer and co-host, Colorado beekeeper, Tom Theobald talk to Michele Colopy, Program Director of the Pollinator Stewardship Council, Inc. about their efforts to protect bees and help beekeepers that are dealing with threats to their hives due to chemical applications.
