In Europe, a victory for bees was announced as the German chemical giant Bayer Crop Science lost a legal battle to sue Friends of the Earth Germany (BUND) over its claims that two of its pesticides are harmful to bees. During the Vietnam War, the United States military sprayed millions of gallons of Agent Orange and other herbicides on trees and vegetation. Several decades later, concerns about the health effects from these chemicals continue. One of the groups impacted by Agent Orange Dioxin poisoning is the servicemen who were at sea. These brave men are often referred to as Blue Water Navy, which includes Coast Guard and Fleet Marine personnel. Although it has been over forty years, there are still so many servicemen as well as their offspring who continue to suffer due to Agent Orange Dioxin poisoning. While the United States Veterans Administration offers "eligible Veterans", a free Agent Orange Registry health exam to assess possible long-term health problems related to exposure, gathering the information is quite a task. However, there are people out there who are doing everything they can to help our veterans get the help that they need. Bonnie Raindrop is the Legislative Chair for the Central Maryland Beekeepers Association (CMBA). CMBA is a member organization of the Smart on Pesticides Maryland coalition which has over 60 organizations who are working together to pass the Pollinator Protection Act in Maryland in the 2015 legislative session. She has been a beekeeper for 9 years.

Bill Castro is a full-time urban treatment-free beekeeper in Baltimore City who has been involved with bees in one way or another for nearly 40 years, and a military spouse. He owns and operates Bee Friendly Apiary. His love of nature and deep respect for honey bees has also been shared through volunteering in Baltimore City classroom education for school age children as well as speaking publicly to civic groups and garden clubs. He promotes honey bee stewardship and a chemical free environment.

In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to Neurobiologist and Professor Emeritus, at the Free University of Berlin, Dr. Randolf Menzel about his latest research titled, Neonicotinoids Interfere with Specific Components of Navigation in Honeybees. Dr. Menzel pioneered the honeybee as a model system in neuroscience with respect to color vision, olfaction, learning, and memory. Combining levels of analysis from natural behavior to single neurons, he traced perceptual and cognitive capacities to their neural and cellular substrates. He established the first evidence for the role of the insect mushroom body in memory formation and characterized the cellular and neural correlates of different phases of memory. His latest research explores the use of three neonicotinoids, (neonicotinoids, imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiacloprid) and their impact on honeybee navigation. Stay tuned!
