The Other Half

After what feels like every single listener begging them to watch The Birdcage, Ethan and Mike finally watch it. The movie stars Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as a long time gay couple. Robin Williams owns "The Birdcage" which is a club Nathan Lane performs at in drag.

The tension arrives when Robin Williams' son asks his father to not be gay when he meets his son's fiancee's family. Easy for Robin Williams, but for Nathan Lane, it's a big ask.

This is a product of 1996 for sure, but at the time it was a huge win for showing happy gay couples in the movies. Even today, many gay couple protagonists face tragedy and hardship on screen and it's rare to see one in a happy, healthy relationship. That being said, Robin Williams' son request is downright offensive and uhhh really sucks.

But does the movie itself hold up? Well, you'll have to listen to find out!

We decided to watch Madea's Family Reunion as a send off to the nightmare month that has been MAY-dea. Also, it's the sequel to the movie that started it all.

Don't worry nothing much has changed from his modern movies. All of the character's problems are because of a single tragedy that happened to them. Tyler Perry says, "Just get over it and all your problems and PTSD will go away! Also, respect your elders!"

This episode also contains Ethan's extremely well-researched biography of Tyler Perry. It's definitely not just a copy and paste of his Wikipedia page, but it does shed some confusing light as to who Tyler Perry is as a person.

The boys each also write their own Madea movie! Turns out the Madea blueprint can create wildly different stories despite using the same prompt.

Look we're just happy this nightmare is over....

Be sure to also watch our first Madea episode, Diary of a Mad Black Woman.

In the fourth episode of MAY-dea, the boys get a little help for Boo! A Madea Halloween. They are joined by Mia, who originally introduced them to the idea of watching Madea movies for an entire month. As you can imagine, she has a lot of explaining to do.

This episode and movie contain all your favorite characters. Aunt Bam, Madea, Brian and Uncle Joe all return to wreak havoc on a local fraternity on Halloween night. Just an upfront warning, there are no actual ghosts in this movie..... that we know of for sure.

Be sure to also watch our first Madea episode, Diary of a Mad Black Woman.

In the third episode of MAY-dea, the boys are on life support during Madea's Big Happy Family. They're only halfway through the month and it's getting harder and harder to see the fun in Tyler Perry's Madea Cinematic Universe.

This man's only message is to get you to start hitting your kids because that's the reason for all of today's problems apparently?

Be sure to also watch our first Madea episode, Diary of a Mad Black Woman.

In the second episode of MAYdea, we see how well Madea does with random rich white people living in her house in Madea's Witness Protection.

Tyler Perry recruits Eugene Levy and Denise Richards to impart some of Madea's timeless wisdom to them. It boils down to man-up and traumatize your kids.

Get ready for MAYdea, an entire month to watching Madea movies! We begin Madea's first movie, Diary of a Mad Black Woman. The boys have absolutely no idea what they're getting into. They didn't have any idea about the Madea universe's rich characters such as Uncle Joe. Kevin Feige move over! It's time for Tyler Perry to take the spotlight and spout his weird views on relationships.

The boys watch the 2018 Indian movie Tumbbad! With its oppressive atmosphere and brooding tone, it's a stark departure you'd typically expect from most Indian Bollywood style movies. Despite it being a massive industry, the only other Indian movie we watched was Happy New Year. This movie is NOTHING like that one.

It surprisingly shares more in common with modern American horror movies such as Hereditary or the VVitch.

It took a lot of convincing, but eventually, Ethan convinced Mike to watch M Night Shyamalan's latest, Glass. Mike was right and this podcast contains many reasons why you should avoid this movie starring Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, and Samuel L Jackson. The scenes in this movie have to be heard to be believed.

Be sure to listen to our other podcasts about the same movie universe Unbreakable and Split.

It's the conclusion to the Unbreakable universe! How could we not watch it? We have a duty to, you, the fans. "I AM YOU."

Straight from Sweden, dripping with existential dread, comes the famous film, The Seventh Seal. This movie is considered one of the greatest of all time, but it came out in the '50s! Does it still hold up today.

Despite our positive talk, this episode is NOT sponsored by the Criterion Channel. If you're hungry for us, talking about well-regarded classic movies in the history of cinema you can also listen to, Seven Samurai, The Deer Hunter and Spawn.

Phelan joins the podcast to do what she does best, bring awful girly movies to the podcast! John Tucker Must Die is of the time and that time is 2006. Surprisingly, a lot has changed since then, but girls bonding together to bring down an awful man still resonates today.

Let's just hope he learns his lesson.
