Earth Day: The Whole Truth with ClientEarth’s James Thornton
Meet Client Earth´s John Condon, along with Francesco Maletto, two marine lawyers who are working to eliminate illegal fishing practices in Spain’s marine-protected areas and transition to more low-impact, sustainable practices.
Just last month, Client Earth brought suit against the Spanish government for authorizing bottom trawling within protected areas, which are home to sensitive and endangered species, unique ecosystems and habitats, and which are key to supporting fishing resources and mitigating climate change.
Spain has the largest fishing capacity in the EU and the highest per capita consumption on the continent, yet the suit claims that the Spanish government is failing to conduct adequate assessments on the damage caused by bottom trawling, which involves dragging heavy nets across the seafloor that damage habitats and kill wildlife indiscriminately.
Client Earth is asking for your involvement, so please follow the link in the show notes to see how you can join the Client Earth community and support their work.
In our chat, we discuss the scale of the problem, who benefits from keeping trawling legal (and subsidised), the role of the public in shaping change, and signs for holding on to optimism moving forward.
