The story follows James Hart (played by Timothy Bottoms), a first-year law student at Harvard who faces challenges when he clashes with the formidable contracts professor Charles W. Kingsfield Jr. (played by John Houseman). Despite the difficulties, James perseveres and even starts dating the professor's daughter, Susan (played by Lindsay Wagner).
