  • EP56: Lessons Learned from One Year of Podcasting

“Having a podcast is an opportunity to give to someone first by introducing them to your audience.”

    Janelle Lara (7:20-7:29)

Podcasting is the future of business, and every business needs to invest in an audio strategy.

Podcasting lets you share your experiences and stories as well as those of your clients. You can bring in experts and get immediate feedback from my audience.

“If I could only do one thing all day long, it would be recording and producing episodes of this podcast.” - Janelle Lara (2:10-2:19)

A podcast puts your voice right inside someone's ears for an extended period of time, allowing people to truly get to know you.

Having a podcast gets your foot in the door to create new opportunities with others. It allows you to reach out to someone and invite them to be on your podcast. They become excited about the opportunity to talk to you.

Podcasting makes it easy to create content your audience can binge on. This helps them get the information they need to buy from you, especially when they're actively searching for the services or products you offer.

The podcasting market is wide open. In the U.S. alone, 150 million people listen to podcasts on a monthly basis while 103 million people listen to podcasts each week.

“Start thinking about how you can create consistent content without having to always be present in order for it to reach your audience.”  - Janelle Lara (14:28-14:39)

With only 300,000 podcasts actively being updated, there’s plenty of room for growth in the podcast market.

Consistency is key when it comes to podcasting. But that doesn’t mean you have to be constantly working to share new content. You can build a team that does all the heavy lifting for you.

You can use podcasting to help your audience get to know, like, and trust you. You can give them information that helps them decide to purchase from you.

More importantly, you can develop content that you can use to generate more visibility for your business while connecting on a deeper level with your audience.

  • EP55: The Truth Behind A Quarter of a Million in 18 Months

“Your business needs fuel to start. There are only two types of fuel: time and money.”

    Janelle Lara (14:17-14:27)

There are plenty of high-level business speakers out there who throw out a lot of big numbers. But they don’t share the behind-the-scenes reality of what it takes to start a successful business.

I want to give you the truth behind what it’s taken to reach a quarter of a million dollars in sales in my business. It didn’t come without sacrifices, but here’s the reality behind building a multi-six-figure business in 18 months while working part-time.

    Fueling Your Business Growth

A car uses the most gas when it starts and is accelerating to 40 miles per hour. But between 40 and 60 miles per hour, it starts to coast and reach an optimal gas mileage. That’s exactly how any business operates.

“Cars use the most gas when they’re starting. Business is the same way.”

    - Janelle Lara (9:08-9:18)

When you’re starting a business, expect to break even in its first year. If your return is equal to the investment you’ve put into your business, then you’re doing well.

I made a profit in my first year in business. But if I had just broken even, it still would've been a good business year. So remember that your business will use the most gas when it's getting started and ramping up.

I’m going to give you an inside look into my business, including real numbers:

    • Gross sales: $249,497
    • Amount collected: $170,000

I have a 12-month program, so my gross sales are going to be paid out over the next 12 months. The $170,000 is what I’ve collected over the past 18 months.

These amounts equal three times what I earned as an assistant principal and five times what I grossed as a fourth-grade teacher.

But here’s the kicker: My business expenses have totaled around $100,000. Fifty percent of that has gone to operating expenses like software and personnel, client gifts, and content creation tools such as lighting gear and microphone. Personnel expenses include my accountant, attorney fees for contracts, and my podcast production team.

The other 50% has been re-invested into my business, totaling around $50,000. This includes coaching and business events I’ve attended or will be attending soon.

Reinvesting into your business is like adding fuel to the automobile. It’s the fuel that keeps the engine in your business going.

    Money is Renewable...Your Time Isn’t

Even though I’ve put six figures back into my business, it’s important to remember the importance of being profitable. You can’t just reinvest everything back into your business.

That’s why I'm going to start reducing expenses and making my business even more profitable. I’m going to focus on generating cold traffic in 2020, which will require another financial investment.

So far, I’ve built this business through organic traffic. In order to reach seven figures, I’m going to run paid ads, which can help me grow my audience without having to invest more of my time.

“The big next-level decisions are always scary because they’re unknown. There are no guarantees.” - Janelle Lara (18:43-19:00)

As a business owner, you need to take those big steps and make big decisions, and it’s going to be scary. But that’s why they call it the hero’s journey. If succeeding in business was easy, everyone would be doing it.

It’s your turn to be brave and step up to the big decisions in your own business and in life. When you do that, you start to see new levels of growth and success.

  • EP54: How I Landed a Huge Speaking Gig with No Prior Experience

“When an opportunity you’ve been praying for is presented to you, jump on it...even if it looks different from what you were initially expecting.”

    Janelle Lara (28:22 -  28:34)

Promote your business by taking it to the stage.

Do you dismiss your dream of public speaking due to a lack of experience? It’s not impossible.

Last October, I secured a spot at the Broadcast Your Authority Media Conference. There I was, speaking alongside the likes of Randi Zuckerburg, Mari Smith, and Sean Cannell. It was surreal. If I can swing something like this, so can you.

“Getting on a stage excites me. It makes me feel powerful, and I know that God is telling me this is my next step.” - Janelle Lara (11:50 - 12:06)

Public speaking can influence change in the lives of others.

I was taking a walk with my daughter one summer day when I had a vision. I saw myself walking onto a stage. Like a pro-wrestler, thunderous rap music bounced to my every step as the crowd hooted and hollered. My hands reached for the microphone and suddenly a hush descended over the crowd.

Once I wrapped up my killer speech, I re-awoke to the unobstructed view of the Wasatch Range.

The seed had been planted. I wrote out and recorded a 9-minute Loom video of a business speech. Along with a prayer, I sent it to my friend and host of the Broadcast Your Authority Media Conference Tamara Thompson. The rest is history.

His what I realized along the way:

    • Give yourself the space to dream. Strokes of genius come to those who are calm and open. Free your mind from to-do lists and appointments. Carve out some “you” time this week and dream.

    • Ask for what you want. It may be wild, crazy, ridiculous, or even unlikely. But if you never try, then you’ll never know. Go ahead and ask. Be sure to specify how your abilities can be of benefit to others.

    • Jump when you see an opportunity. Sometimes what we want doesn’t show up the way we want. I appeared on one of the smaller stages at the conference, but who cares? If you have a chance to take a step in the right direction, go for it.

“You need to ask for what you want.”- Janelle Lara (22:03 - 22:07)

Public speaking is an opportunity for you to market your business and establish a strong presence. It’s a chance for you to be seen and have your message heard in a larger setting. Yet it requires a great amount of courage. Do you have what it takes? Step up to the microphone and reach your full potential.

  • EP53: How I Grew My Business to Multiple Six Figures in 18 Months

“Since the beginning of my business, I’ve consistently prioritized and invested in continuing education.”

    Janelle Lara (2:24 - 2:36)

I started my business in April 2018 with a $10,000 loan. In just a year and a half, my business has grossed over $250,000. While most of that happened in 2019, it still feels like an incredible accomplishment.

More importantly, everything that I have done, you can also do. I don’t have any special talents. But I do have a knack for business, and I’ve been committed and consistent since the beginning.

“When I talk about education, I’m talking about investing in opportunities that grow your mind.” - Janelle Lara (3:46 - 3:51)

Let’s take a look at a few of the things that I’ve done so you can apply them in your business and experience similar (or even better) results as me.

    Education is a priority.

One thing that I have been consistent about is that I have been prioritizing and investing in education since the very beginning. The value of education was instilled in me from a young age by my parents, who immigrated from Cuba. They understood that all your material wealth can be taken from you, but no one can ever take what you know.

Although specialized knowledge can be valuable, when I talk about education, I don’t necessarily mean more schooling. My grandfather only had a fourth-grade education, and he built multiple successful businesses.

Real education is investing in opportunities that allow your mind to grow. That could mean books, podcasts, hiring a coach, investing in courses, and formal education. Investing in personal growth has been one of the most critical components of my success as an entrepreneur.

    Be authentic and consistent.

Another thing I’ve done is that I’ve been relentlessly consistent with my messaging and branding. My message has been the same since the very beginning: I help women build six-figure businesses while working part-time.

I’m completely open about who I am. I make it clear that my family is a top priority for me. Everyone who follows me knows that I am a Christian and that my faith is important to me. They also know that I am a first-generation American, and they know my backstory.

Being authentic and vulnerable allows me to attract the people that are a perfect fit for me.

Investing in myself and my business.

I’m always investing in myself and my business. I work with a coach who’s been crucial for me as well as an accountability partner who I couldn’t do without.

I’ve invested in attending events and joining high-level masterminds. Connecting with like-minded entrepreneurs and associating with key players in the game has helped propel my business to a new level.

Attending events gives you cutting-edge information. Books and podcasts are only current at the time of their release, and things are always changing. Events teach you the latest information. You can apply what you learn at the events to your client’s businesses and separate yourself from the competition.

“Being authentic and vulnerable from the very beginning has allowed me to attract people who are a perfect fit for me.” - Janelle Lara (7:58 - 8:07)

These three things have been foundational in my business success. How can you start implementing them in your business today, so you can grow your business into multiple six figures in a relatively short time?

  • EP52: Ashley Had Her Highest Month Ever

“What you receive is equal to what you give and put in.”

    Janelle Lara (37:21 - 37:26)

Do you feel like you’re not living up to your full potential?

Mindset Coach Ashley Rainsbarger had never collected more than $4,000 a month for her business. She was on the verge of giving up when she hopped on a call with me in July. Together we were able to crack some limiting beliefs, pivot her offer, and refuel her fire. Three weeks later, Ashley collected her first-ever $10,000!

“Yes, it takes trial and error. That’s just part of the journey! You have to do, try, and fail.” - Ashley Rainsbarger (41:30 - 41:36)

Are you ready for a radical transformation? Then you’ve got some work to do.  You’ve got to remove mental barriers to level up in business and life.

    Your mindset determines growth.

There are two types of mindsets: abundance and scarcity. Those with an abundance mindset believe there is always more. On the other hand, those with a scarcity mindset believe there is never enough.

What kind of entrepreneur do you want to be? We’re guessing the type that embraces possibility over fear and doubt! Adopt an abundance mindset for a whole new you. When you open yourself up to receive the good things, you attract blessings, wealth, and success.

    You control your mindset.

We all have limiting beliefs surrounding our identity. They can trick us into thinking we’re unfit for greatness. The truth is that you are far more capable than you think. God has big plans for you that are beyond your understanding.

So if you want to be a successful business owner, you need to think of yourself as one already. Take control of your thoughts and attitude. Train your mind to be the entrepreneur you want to be now, not later.

You grow when you take responsibility and invest in yourself.

You could do all the mindset work and start a business on your own. Or you could hire outside help to speed up the process.

No, a coach won’t be able to wave a magic wand and make everything better. But they can point out the blind spots that are causing you trouble. An outside perspective gives you a clearer picture of what’s going on in your business and what you can do about it.

“If you’re building something that’s not leading you towards your goals, then you’re not building something worth creating.”

    - Janelle Lara (25:51 - 26:04)

There’s no better time than the present to be the person you want to be and do what you want most. “Someday” never comes when you play it safe. You’ve got to put in the work if you want to see progress.  Tap into the power of an abundance mindset to realize your full potential.

Embrace the truth that you are capable, you are enough, and you are a successful business owner.
