The Paul Garcia Show

Tristan Garland is my friend who has been through some incredible challenges in life - from being abandoned by his parents as a newborn, to being surrounded by heroin addicts from a young age. Today, he joins me a wise, intelligent, and brave young man pursuing a degree in psychology, to talk about mental illness and the myths and truths surrounding it, plus a few of his own fascinating insights and beliefs about the topic.

We set out in February 2019 with the goal of creating a brewery and space centered around two things - Craft Beer & Community. “Emancipation” means many things to us, but above all, we want it to stand for freedom from the bad things in beer.

The first aspect we wanted to tackle was flavorless beer. We brew beers with authentic ingredients for each style and spare no cost in sourcing the ingredients that we believe will result in the most delicious beer possible. Our top priority is, and will always be, creating the highest quality beers we are able to, no matter the cost.

The second aspect is the snobbery often found in craft beer. We consciously create a space where people in all stages of their craft beer journey can enjoy themselves. We do our best to curate a tap list that includes a wide variety of styles that allow a visitor to find something they’re comfortable with, as well as something for them to push their limits and experiment with.

The third aspect is the negative connotation that beer can evoke. Often, beer is seen as a step below wine and spirits - a beverage consumed in mass quantity without much thought. A means to an end. We strive to create an environment where the focus is on the aspects of beer such as flavor, aroma, and experience. Beyond that, we hope that our taproom is a place that people visit to connect with friends and family, and have the opportunity to make new friends as well.

By keeping the focus on our beers and the personal connections people make while enjoying them, we make strides toward freeing ourselves from the bad aspects of beer.

We hope you enjoy our beers and taproom as much as we’ve enjoyed creating them.

- Lincoln & Don Slagel

Joshua P. Rodgers knew that he would spend his life fighting for this country. He grew up in the shadow of 9/11. His mother, Vonda, remembers Rodgers always turning his face to the sky when planes flew overhead. As a boy, he dressed up in camouflage and played “army” while hidden in the grass.

When Rodgers enlisted in the Army following his graduation from Normal Community High School, he took a first step toward fulfilling a lifelong ambition. He would go on to join the Army Rangers, an elite unit of highly trained soldiers. Rodgers was on his third tour in Afghanistan when his regiment took heavy enemy fire in Nangarhar Province. Rodgers was leading his team. He was shot in the leg and stopped long enough to tie his own tourniquet before charging back into the fray. The next shot was fatal.

Joshua Rodgers was 22 years old when he was killed on April 27, 2017.

As the country prepares to remember its fallen soldiers this Memorial Day, Vonda and Kevin Rodgers shared memories of their heroic son – a man who they say became exactly the person he always wanted to be.
