In 2014 we began working with Ian Perkins, CEO of lawlab, which, at the time, was a small and growing conveyancing firm.

We’ve worked with him every year since, and have helped him expand the business to 50 staff nationwide. Ian was kind enough to jump on a call with me to discuss their growth, and the role People Leaders has had in building his team over the years.

There is a very different dynamic for small and medium businesses than there is with larger organisations, particularly when the owner is the leader of the business. Often these owners are what we would call "accidental leaders," meaning they didn't specifically set out to become a people leader as such, but it's come about as a natural consequence of the success of their business.

They can, of course, still be outstanding leaders, but can sometimes need a bit of extra help, particularly when it comes to creating their own leadership team, and developing a culture that doesn't revolve around the owner making all the decisions.

Today’s topic of choice is one we have found people leaders really struggle with, and can really open up so many opportunities for them: delegation.

In coaching or workshops, we often hear managers say, "Yes, but I'm so busy, surely I can't push any more work down on to the people that report to me." Our answer is simply, “Ask, you might be surprised by the response”.If it's the right kind of work and is something your team is interested in or think it may help with their growth and development, they’ll likely say yes. Rarely do people say no, so managers shouldn’t use that as an excuse.

It's important not to assume, especially as a people leader, because there are so many benefits of delegating.

One of the qualities that separates leaders from managers is self awareness. 

A manager with low levels of self awareness is unlikely to bring out the best in themselves, let alone their team. Whereas a leader with high levels of self awareness, is going to naturally develop the skills needed to bring out the best in the people working with them.

They will be more likely to display the humility, the compassion, and the authenticity that people leadership requires.

Many leaders only develop their self awareness either by chance or by professional development that includes a component of self-awareness training within it.

One of the most underrated ways of developing self awareness is through leadership journaling. And while a first reaction might be to think, “I simply do not have the time for a luxury like journaling,” we encourage you to think again.

The reflective nature of journaling is such that you will become aware of ineffective behaviours and habits that are reducing your effectiveness as a leader. In other words, instead of exhausting yourself through non-supportive behaviours and actions, you’ll enliven yourself through behaviours and actions that are on point.

The bottom line is, deep leadership starts with self leadership, and self leadership starts with self awareness.

One of the biggest mistakes we see in the leadership field is promoting someone above their natural level of leadership.
