  • TPToA Podcast 334 – The Creator
Fire up your positronic brains and get down with your bad A.I. simulant-selves as we check out the new film from Gareth Edwards: The Creator. Cyberpunk, sci-fi military war-movie and zen Buddhist anti-imperial colonialism come crashing together in this visual treat. But is it actually a good film? That's very much a personal preference and one which will be hotly discussed in this podcast.

Dion and Peta were our two intelligences on this podcast due to a sudden bout of food poisoning taking Quinny out at the last minute.

He has also had some thoughts on the film and wanted to add them and his score here as well:
This is a visual treat that I adored watching up until the last act. It has some really sketchy sexual politics and the totally unnecessary fridging feels like a hangover from a time that this film might have been more at home in. It's focus on grand visuals to back up it's world building is certainly playing to it's strengths, but sadly the more you scratch the surface the more it feels like it's nowhere near as deep or meaningful as it wishes to be.
It relies heavily on tropes we have seen a lot before, and also surprisingly on some race based stereotypes that are a bit awkward in this day and age. When it does pose intriguing moral questions it does so almost too quietly; so you miss them, or sometimes too blatantly so you're being beaten over the head with the allegory. The magical child needing a father figure/saviour feels like its lifted from the Golden Child, or one of a hundred other films and any reveals about the child or its genesis are telegraphed massively.
But the world was so intriguing and beautiful that I found it hard to dislike. Yes the third act falls apart and becomes Deus Ex Machina after Deus Ex Machina (gaming reference intended). and yes the logic of where Nomad is, or how big it is or far away it is seems a bit flexible.  But this is gorgeous Cyberpunk cinema that looks amazing (especially considering what it was shot on!) and it really is a big example of "Style over substance".
I am glad i watched it on the biggest screen i could and am not ashamed to say i enjoyed the visual treat I was served, even if it was pure empty calories.

  • TPToA Podcast 333 – One Piece
Normally when we talk about sailing the high seas for our entertainment, it's a bit more tongue in cheek (and possibly referring to the high cost of streaming services and film in this hellscape of an economy). • TPToA Podcast 330 – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Mutant Mayhem
Since their emergence in the early eighties we have seen innumerable iterations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; on our TV screens, in our cinemas, in our video games and on our shelves in the form of SO MANY TOYS... Well, now only a year after their last TV outing (Rise of the TMNT) we return to the cinema screen with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, a fresh animated take on the terrapin teens brought to us from the man-child duo of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Is it simply more of the same that we've seen time and time before? Or have we hit on something new and different? Listen in and find out!

Our usual awesome foursome are down to two this week, with Quinnatello and Jillangelo holding down the sewer, while the other two turtles go swimming around in the ooze!
After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers. Their new friend, April O'Neil, helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.

  • TPToA Podcast 329 – Blue Beetle
OK folks, get ready for the movie discussion that has been on the tips of the lips of all concerned for some time now. How deep a cut is too deep and what do we do when Superhero Fatigue has finally hit us like a wrecking ball? with DC's Blue Beetle, we find ourselves in an uncertain universe, with possibly no history and probably no future. It was elevated from a TV movie to a cinema release almost at the exact same time Batgirl went the other way. The character is lesser known and the focus is niche. So, sadly no matter how entertaining the film is, its up against it from the start!

Dion, Peta and Jill are flying the murderous bug ship for this episode as Quinny is off hanging out with molluscs.
Jaime Reyes suddenly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology called the Scarab. When the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he's bestowed with an incredible suit of armor that's capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.

  • TPToA Podcast 328 – Asteroid City
The film is about a TV show that follows a writer, working on his world famous fictional play. The play becomes the film that isn't the TV show, but is still a play. It's theatrical narrative is about a grieving father who travels with his tech-obsessed family to the small rural town of Asteroid City to compete in a junior stargazing event, only to have his world view disrupted forever. The film is directed by Wes Anderson, The TV show is narrated by Bryan Cranston the play is directed by Adrien Brody who is actually playing Schubert Green.

This podcast is just a podcast, it featured Dion, Jill, Peta and an Alien masquerading as Quinny. No. None of this makes much sense.

  • TPToA Podcast 327 – Deadloch
This Podcast may be the most swearing and profanity riddled show we have ever done.... but it's also about a surprising Amazon Prime comedy-crime-thriller series set in the fictional Tasmanian seaside (and weirdly rural?) town of Deadloch. It's unashamedly weird, and it manages to be surprising at every turn. Plus it's creative use of the C word is borderline operatic.

The pack of c***s in the review for this episode are Jill and Peta representing the non-Taswegians, Dion repping the ring-in Tassie folks and Quinny flying the flag for his home state!

The beguilingly sleepy settlement of Deadloch on Tasmania's coast, is shaken when the body of a local man turns up dead on the beach. Two female detectives, Dulcie and Eddie reluctantly take charge of the investigation together, aided by overeager constable Abby and the mostly dependable Sven. The death coinciding with the town's annual Winter Feastival - a celebration of local arts, cuisine and culture - forces Dulcie and Eddie to cope with each other's drastically opposing investigative styles, and discover what secrets are being hidden in a place struggling to disguise the deep rifts that are slowly splitting it and the lives of its residents in two.

    https://youtu.be/fnqw7dvF8o4
A huge shout-out to the fabulous feastival attendees and small town-bogans join in with our moderated live-chat during the Twitch stream, each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEST. And especially to those who have decided to stop their questionable politically motivated killing sprees to be super lovely, generous humans! Thanks for supporting us directly via our Ko-Fi jar and now also by subscribing on Twitch! You ALL are amazing, whether you're part of the town's "new" residents, or part of the old guard....

Hey, remember the late '90s? Remember Playstation 1 games? remember when it was just THE Playstation? Well this one is coming at you HOT, direct from 1996 folks! Peacock have decided that the Twisted Metal universe needed to be brought to life on our TV screens and who are we to argue? It's got cars, guns, sass and sex, oh and a clown with a flaming head... it's peak '90s! We just need some music from the period and some Juggalo style humor and we're ready for a good time!

Quinny is on the sidelines cheering for this one, but Jill, Dion and Peta are roaring in to a free for all of 100% car-nage!
In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, John Doe, a talkative milkman with amnesia, is given a mission to traverse the desolate United States to deliver a mysterious package with unknown contents.
