His bigger point — Maine is an independent-minded state with a Republican senator and an independent one, and the answer isn't another progressive heartthrob but a moderate bridge-builder who can reach the 300,000-plus independents who actually decide these races.

That sets off a sharp exchange with Jaime Harrison over what "establishment" even means. Paul argues the party keeps losing, keeps falling for online-video fantasies that end in disappointment, and needs a real reckoning — the consultants who profit off every doomed surge should have no role in leadership. Harrison pushes back hard: Democrats hold the Maine governorship and most statewide offices, "establishment" is just the people who organize, recruit, and win, and the real task is a credible, high-character candidate who can prosecute the case against Susan Collins on abortion and Kavanaugh. Paul's throughline holds — you can't count on the Democrats to save you, and independents like Angus King are proof that Maine rewards something different. Stay vigilant.
