Is it playable? 

Is it game relevant?

 Is what we are asking this player to do something they will actually have a chance to do more than once in a basketball game?

 If not, we're probably wasting their time and our own time. 

Unfortunately, most programs and most team coaches get the 80/20 rule backward - they spend a lot of their time working on incredibly complex, irrelevant skills for the player that the player will never have the chance to do in a game. 

All the success that we've had with results, being able to guarantee results in game performance for our players, has come from making EVERYTHING game relevant, making everything playable. 

We don't do anything that doesn't actually happen in the game and happens frequently enough to be worthwhile getting good at!

I firmly believe that by meeting the player where they're at and focusing on helping them learn, instead of focusing on what we can teach them, we are going to go farther and achieve more together. 

By taking the personal mentorship approach, we're really trying to become their sidekick.

We're not coming in as the overbearing, dominant coach, authority figure that's going to tell them what to do and yell at them if they make mistakes and make them run sprints and punish them.

We're not coming in as the drill sergeant, we're coming in as their "guide on the side" rather than the "sage on the stage" to quote Joe Polish.

I like to welcome every player to our Confidence Formula program by writing them a note when they sign up, and just tell them "I look forward to being a part of YOUR journey and working alongside YOU, as YOU pursue the next part of YOUR basketball career."

Where we focus our attention as a team, as a coaching staff, and as a program is that we're here to stand next to you as a player and see the world from your perspective, then show you where you are compared to where you want to go, and layout a path to guide you where before you couldn't see a way forward.

Patience started as a personality trait for me - a mentality I've always had. I've always been very patient and willing to go through a lot of stuff that would frustrate most people enough to make them quit.

The patience factor for players is essential and even healing in some ways. When players start beating themselves up when they're working with me on the court, I'm not saying much at all or criticizing them.

Often the players themselves are criticizing and kicking themselves mentally. It's usually because they've had that from other coaches, their peers, their parents, whoever.

I see it almost like a defense mechanism - a safeguard - they have where they know they will get criticized and even punished for what could be seen as a mistake. They're jumping on themselves - verbally criticizing and kicking themselves out loud to save them from someone else doing it to them.

I think that's really sad.

Perpetual learning is one of the core values of our whole business and an essential piece of our Play Practice Formula - because we're changing the player's mindset and mentality related to learning that has much broader application beyond basketball. 

Our ideal players have that motor built in, with "batteries included."

They are hungry because they aim to move up and play at higher levels; they know they're not there yet, and they need and WANT help to figure it out.  

They are a sponge for information, and we are a firehose - they soak up as much as possible!

We find players willing to be learners; we model that as coaches and demonstrate that wherever you are - this is just a start! Basketball has no ceiling for how good you can get at it or how much you can learn about it. 

We put them on the accelerator track to get their learning gears going!

Over time, one of the biggest realizations I've come to is that by removing half of all communication that coaches spend their time on -  the negative side of telling their learners what not to do, what they did wrong, etc. -  the results and effectiveness of coaching can be dramatically accelerated. 

Our approach has lead to what some of our players' parents have called "Getting more coaching in 30 minutes than my player got in three years on their team"

Is your player's coach peaceful, or do they punish mistakes and leave your player crippled to take action for fear of mistakes?

 Somehow the standard for coaching, somewhere in the last 100 years, became to point out mistakes, punish mistakes, make players live in fear of making mistakes, and yet expect those players to keep taking the risks they need to learn, develop, and progress.
