Hello and welcome to Bill vs the MCU! Each month your hosts Pop Break Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus and Pop Break Editor in Chief Bill Bodkin take another step into the wider Marvel Multiverse, with reviews and interviews on the film and television series that may be drawn upon as the MCU dives deeper and deeper into its Multiverse Saga.

After completing their twelve month rewatch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Alex and Bill are fully embracing the ethos of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga with miniseries devoted to all the MCU-adjacent material out there. Currently, the pair are taking a guided tour of the Netflix Defenders-verse, featuring reviews of select seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, along with this universe’s crossover event The Defenders.

This month, Alex and Bill are continuing the multiversal phase of their podcast by checking in on 2015’s Jessica Jones S1. They praise Krysten Ritter’s star-making turn as the titular Jessica Jones and the insidiously evil performance by everyone’s favorite Doctor, David Tennant. They also debate the merits of the Will Simpson character and just who’s to blame for him sucking so hard, whether we needed to learn that much about Jeri Hogarth’s divorce, and which of Jessica’s days was the very worst day of them all.

They are also joined by special guest Tori Preston, Managing Editor of Pajiba.com and host of their TV Podcast Podjiba, to help understand the cultural context around the series when it first debuted, how well its emotional and sexual abuse storylines hold up post #MeToo, and what went wrong with those last two seasons of the series.

Alex and Bill also unveil their new monthly segment Miss Minutes Marvel Memo, where they try to cram in a month’s of MCU headlines in five minutes!

Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are back to talk about The Joy of Painting for its 40th anniversary.

The Joy of Painting debuted on January 11, 1983 on PBS, where it ran for 31 seasons and 403 episodes. The series ended on May 17, 1994. It has since continued through reruns and streaming.

On the show, host Bob Ross guides the viewer through a painting, while also encouraging experimentation. Some episodes feature a guest, such his son Steve, or even animals like squirrels and birds.

Josh and Aaron look at the show’s first episode and talk about Bob Ross’ appeal. They also discuss Bob Ross’ legacy and the show’s similarities to today’s media.

Last week, newly minted DC Studio’s co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran made quite a splash when they announced 10 new DC comic book adaptations as part of their launch of the DCU, a new interconnected DC comics inspired continuity which will span film, live action television series, animated television series, and video games. Gunn and co. had few details in terms of stars, directors, or release dates, but they were able to give fans and skeptical WBD investors alike some insight into their “writer-centric” approach to cultivating a brand new cinematic universe, along with a promise to keep some extremely popular film and television franchises (like Joker, The Batman, and Teen Titans Go) alive under the newly created Elseworlds label.

While this news will undoubtedly find its way to many of your favorite Pop Break podcasts over the months and years to come, we wanted to assemble our own Justice League of podcasting superheroes for a special bonus episode of Pop Break Today where you will be able to hear our instant reaction on this newly announced slate.

First up is an interview between Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus and Batman By The Numbers Podcast host Dan Cohen discussing some of the major themes and points of interest coming out of last Tuesday’s announcement. Meanwhile, Alex gives it up for Apple TV+ after a month that saw them debut the Harrison Ford starring sitcom Shrinking (from the creators of Ted Lasso), make a big splash at the Sundance Film Festival (where they beat Amazon in a bidding war for film Flora And Son and debuted Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie), helped Bryan Tyree Henry earn a surprise Best Supporting Actor nomination for his work in the film Causeway, and debuted that amazing Timothee Chalamet ad.

New Series Spotlight – Alex, Bill, and Josh review Poker Face, Peacock’s case of the week murder mystery written and directed by Knives Out & The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and starring Natasha Lyonne as a former poker player who can always tell when someone is lying, Benjamin Brett as the casino fixer trying to hunt her down, and a slew of special guest stars every episode.
