  • TV Break: July 2023 - Secret Invasion Stumbles; Black Mirror Returns; Tom Holland Tries His Best; & The Best of 2023 TV So Far

Welcome to TV Break, where Pop Break’s Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky to talk about the happenings in television.

Here’s the format of the show:

The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Josh, and special guest Courtney Stevenson talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including Netflix’s Black Mirror and The Way of the House Husband; AppleTV Plus’s Platonic and The Crowded Room, and FreeVee’s Jury Duty.

News Break – Alex, Bill, Josh, and Courtney all skip the news this month to discuss their top tv shows of the first half of 2023, including in depth discussions of The Bear, From, Shrinking, The Other Two, Ted Lasso, Demonslayer, and more.

Streaming Wars – Alex, Josh, and Courtney pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. Josh and Courtney agreed that Netflix had the best month after their major Tudum news event, new TV series like Black Mirror S6, The Witcher S3 Part 1, and Queen Charlotte, and new movies such as Extraction 2 and Namona. Meanwhile, Alex makes the case for Hulu after The Bear’s second season launches big, they secure the rights to SXSW favorite Anna Kendrick/Andy Samberg comedy Self Reliance, and they drop trailers for Justified: City of Primeval, What We Do In The Shadows, and Reservation Dog. Ryan Murphy leaving Netflix for Disney is also discussed.

New Series Spotlight – Alex, Josh, and Courtney review Secret Invasion,Disney Plus’s first MCU series since last fall’s SheHulk, starring Samuel L Jackson as Agent Nick Fury.

The series, created by Mr. Robot writer Kyle Bradstreet and directed by Ali Selim, follows Fury as he returns to Earth to deal with an emergent threat from the shapeshifting Skrulls. Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos and Don Cheadle’s Rhodey both return, while Academy Award winner Olivia Coleman, Emilia Clarke, and Kingsley Ben-Adir make their MCU debuts to round out the cast.

        • Batman By The Numbers: The Flash (2023)

There’s arguably no superhero in existence that has been reimagined, redefined, or reinterpreted more than Batman.  No matter how many times he’s been rebooted, audiences are always willing to come back to Gotham City’s greatest defender.  With so much Bat content out there, there’s plenty to dissect, analyze, and of course, rank!  This podcast is dedicated to a surgical evaluation of Batman’s history, with a focus on ranking several topics in the world of Batman, among other classic Bat themes and characters.

Join host Daniel Cohen, Pop Break’s former Film Editor and Resident Bat-Maven, as he brings on several guests every month to share his passion for the one and only Dark Knight.  From Adam West to Robert Pattinson, no bat stone will be left unturned. Bottom-line: If you’re a Batman fan, this is required listening.

After facing constant delays, director turmoil, and early positive reaction, The Flash has finally arrived!  We’ve seen it.  Did we like it???  Well, you’ll have to listen to find out that answer.

          SPOILER WARNING

Daniel is joined once again by Podcast Editor, Alex Marcus, and making his Batman by the Numbers debut, the host of the Podwork Angels podcast, Justin Mancini.  They discuss everything!  The characters.  Story.  The cameos!!! (Again, spoiler alert).  Did Michael Keaton’s return as Batman work?  Did Michael Shannon’s return as General Zod make waves?  Is Barry Allen actually the main character in his own movie?  What does this movie mean going forward for the DCEU, or rebooted DCEU, or kind of rebooted, but is it, but maybe it is, or some of it is, we’ll see, we don’t know, yadda, yadda, yadda.  Listen in real time to Alex breaking Batman news to Daniel on the podcast, and be entertained by Daniel desperately trying to comprehend the information.

Also, please keep in mind this podcast was recorded before the UNDERWHELMING box office results were made official, BUT it is addressed.

This podcast is an absolute whirlwind, and you don’t want to miss it!

Hello and welcome to Bill vs the MCU! Each month your hosts Pop Break Podcasting Director Alex Marcus and Pop Break Editor in Chief Bill Bodkin are taking another step into the wider Marvel Multiverse as the MCU dives deeper into their Multiverse Saga.

Bill & Alex spent all of 2022 rewatching the first four phases of the MCU, and they just spent the first half of 2023 completing their first season on Netflix’s The Defenders Saga, culminating in Netflix’s The Defenders miniseries.

This month, Marvel has officially entered Phase V of The MCU, the middle phase of the Multiverse Saga, and things have not been going so great for the most successful studio in Hollywood. Since Black Panther: Wakanda Forever closed out Phase 4 back in November, Marvel has released two film, delayed a ton of TV shows, and endured an avalanche of negative publicity, from c-suite crises and production delays to casting catastrophes and failures with critics, fans, and at the box office. Bill and Alex will give their big picture thoughts on the State of The MCU (2:20) to help put it all into perspective and truly assess the damage. After that, they will give their in-depth thoughts on the first two releases of Phase V, Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania (54:03) and Guardians of the Galaxy vol. III (1:38:19).
