On this episode we discuss, True Romance, the film that shows us that romance goes a certain way but every once in a while, it goes the other way too. Listen in as we discuss the first Hollywood movie Tarantino wrote and how it turned out to be a fairy tale in modern-day Detroit and LA. We talk about the scenery-chewing dialogue and the heavy-weight players like Hopper, Walken, and Oldman as well as relative newcomers James Gandolfini, Brad Pitt, and Val Kilmer. Hopefully if you ever find a romance as true as Alabama and Clarence's you might find yourself whispering along: "You're so cool, You're so cool, you're so cool."
Join us this episode as The PCP covers What's Eating Gilbert Grape and the outrageous fact that Leonardo DiCaprio won an Academy Award 23 years after THIS Oscar-worthy performance that should have seen him go home with the gold (With Apologies to Tommy Lee Jones.) Join us as we discuss this, a rare straight-man performance of Depp's that sees this eclectic and fascinating actor at his most apathetic and as we reminisce on Darlene Cates' outstanding performance in her first role in anything, we figure out just what IS eating Gilbert Grape.
Join The PCP as we discuss the John Cusack classic, Grosse Pointe Blank, and answer his character's question to himself: You're a handsome devil, what's your name? This movie cemented Cusack as a romantic lead and a plethora of rom-coms followed. From High Fidelity to Must Love Dogs, he perfected his unlikeable but likeable shtick. But, though Say Anything is so iconic, his rhythm for movies he worked best in started with this one. Minnie Driver joins him with a fantastic American accent, an adorable, scene-stealing improv nature, and a perfect delivery of another classic rom-com exchange:
"Do you have a wife in Arkansas?"
"No."
"Do you wanna dance?"
"Sure."
"....ok."
On this episode of The Post Credit Podcast hosts Matt and Drew take on teen movie/sports drama Varsity Blues and the never ending cadence of the movie's theme song, My Hero by Foo Fighters. Join us as we explore the football culture and lifestyle in Texas that this film represents while also trying to decide if this was just as much Billy Bob's movie as it was Mox's. Listen in as we talk about the phenomenal performance by Jon Voight and what makes the dynamic between his Coach Kilmer and Van Der Beek's Mox so engaging as the coach grinds his teeth at Mox's waste of talent. Also Van Der Beek has 3 last names. The audacity of this guy.
I hate it when I hear the ums and even more the uhs
I hate it when the movie bombs despite the pleasant buzz
I hate it when I write these things and no one cares to read
I hate when they pass up Stiles and instead cast Tara Reid
I hate that Ledger isn't here to act his ass off more
I hate that I don't hate these rom-coms. Not even close. Not even a little bit. I'm never even bored.
The 90's wrapped up with this, perhaps the most iconic (or at least top 5) of all modern teen movies. Channeling My Fair Lady, Sabrina, and even Cinderella, the movie bites with charm, wit, and quotables in a modern retelling, though that bite is with a mouth full of 90's fashion, music, and slang ("Yeah, busy 'Wiggin'"). Join us for the bet that made audiences ignore the jackassery of the male lead, Freddie Prinze Jr playing against type, with little redeeming qualities while semi-newcomer Rachel Leigh Cook steals, drinks, and wipes her mouth with every scene she's in. You didn't really think we'd fawn over this one did you? Oh you did? That's so sweet.
On this episode of The Post Credit Podcast we kick off our 90's Teen Movie month with Matt's favorite of this particular genre, Can't Hardly Wait. Join The PCP as we examine this late-90's teen movie absolutely chock-full of tropes, fashion, stereotypes, and music commited to this time and age group. This movie was never meant to have characters you want to know more about but more characters that are avatars for all the high school stereotypes you ever knew or were in high school and about how coincidence is so often seen as fate in our formative years. These are memories frozen in time people!!!
Join The PCP this episode as we examine the movie Toys starring Robin Williams and directed by Barry Levinson. This was never Williams' best or most revered movie, in fact some consider it his worst. We say not, but even Robin's worst is still pure magic. Listen in as we navigate the director's decision to base it in a fantastically whimsical world, filled to the brim with eccentric and gorgeous production design only to lose real structure, hoping the funny, hyper man-child would negate the issues the film has. It often works when Williams is on-screen, though it's not often enough. The soundtrack is DOPE though! Shout out to Hans (Bubbie) Zimmer!
On this episode of The Post Credit Podcast, Matt and Drew discuss one of their favorite 90's movies, though one of the hosts admits it's not as impactful as it once was. With Honors was made more famous by it's soundtrack, namely a Madonna track, than for its actual merits but it still finds a way to charm, kept mostly afloat by Pesci's talent and the adorable likability of Moira Kelly. RIP Gorky, it's time for Christmas dinner!
