  • SURRENDER OUR MINDS

We understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ. 1 CORINTHIANS 2:16

Many Christians have searched for knowledge that he or she has already had. Many of us have cried out to receive guidance and wisdom from God, not realizing that the mind of Christ is already operating in us and filling us with the wisdom we need.

We are told to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness but it is only through a full surrender of our minds to Christ, by trusting His voice within us, that we can hear and know the things we need. We often know the right decision to make, but we have talked ourselves out of it by our own biases and logic. We do not trust the mind within us because we seem to have several minds.

The Holy Spirit is a gentleman. He will not force Himself upon us, nor will He speak if we are not listening. And because the world has so much noise, most of us do not know how to listen to the Spirit’s whisper.

But God says that He has given us His mind. What am I talking about? I am talking about being one with Christ and bearing His mind. I am talking about a real relationship with Jesus that is more than just a performance-based religion, where we do things for God in order to get something from Him in return.

We have heard all of these promises but many of us are still living like orphans, acting as though we are on our own in this world. We think that the only way we can know what the Lord wants is by hearing an audible voice or seeing some kind of sign. We act as though we need God to do something spectacular for us before we believe that He really loves us and wants good things for our lives. But this is not true.

God is speaking to you right now. And His voice is already in your heart. You don’t have to pray for Him to speak, and you don’t have to study the Word in order to know His will. The mind of Jesus is already within you, waiting patiently to be discovered. There’s no need to work up the courage or muster up the courage to pray before God—you can be still with Him right now. Turning off your devices, closing your eyes, and waiting upon God simply means focusing yourself on what is already within you: the Spirit of Christ. All you have to do is listen—turn inward and hear His whisper.

Jesus, thank You for Your mind  —for sharing Your thoughts with me. Let my mind be filled with Your nature, and give me understanding of Your ways.

  • AND SO...GOD SPEAKS

Only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means. 1 CORINTHIANS 2:14

As adults, we have forgotten that most of the information that we need to know and experience is already within us. We believe that we must go out and find this knowledge through many different channels. I say trust God to whisper it to you! You probably are unaware of what you’re missing.

Then we try to grasp some truth or knowledge only to find that it’s no simple task. It takes time, effort, and much patience to truly absorb something meaningful. But is it the same with God? Since He is God and we are finite, we believe that He imparts His intellect in ways outside of our understanding.

And so God speaks. This can be a whisper; it can be a gentle nudge, but it cannot be ignored. It seems when we are most captivated—emotionally, spiritually, physically—by truth or reality, God seems to have the ability to manifest Himself in powerful ways.

Naturally then, you could ask yourself if the way in which you learn about something has an effect on how well you retain its meaning.

God’s whisper is a strong source of knowledge. It isn’t given to us through a book and it didn’t come from an academic journal. The whisper is loud enough for us to hear it, but not loud enough for others to pick up on it. I think the purpose of the whisper is that we can share our thoughts with God and ask him for advice. It's a point where God gets to know us and we get to know Him.

“But,” you may say, “I have prayed and I have asked the Lord for revelation, yet He seems to be silent.” Maybe you should back up a step and ask again, or maybe your motives were not pure. The Doctrine and Covenants says that if we seek understanding “with a sincere heart” we will get it.

Look at the issue you are wrestling with, and see what you can do to be a little less defensive, a little less controlling, and a little more open to the truth. If we are willing to put our will in Christ’s hands and follow His counsel, we can know through revelation. We just need to ask.

It is imperative that we depend on God’s whisper rather than focus on what we think we know. This isn’t to say that study and research aren’t helpful, but everything we learn has to be viewed through the lens of the Spirit. God’s Word is powerful and provides us with guidance, but if we do not live in close communion with Him every day, we will not hear His gentle whisper guiding us as it should.

Lord, I want to be one who is spiritual  —to understand the things of Your Spirit, all that You choose to reveal. Please teach me how.

  • THE SECRETS OF CHRIST

His Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. 1 CORINTHIANS 2:10

God knows all things. As the Creator of the universe, He knows even the deepest mysteries it contains. He knows every “why” and “how” of existence, the answers to all those questions that nag us about our purpose and destiny.

His Spirit knows every motive of the Father’s heart and every nuance of His relationship with us. He is a guardian of deep secrets, a weaver of intricate patterns, and an intercessor of unsurpassed love. Nothing escapes his notice and nothing occurs without his knowledge; he holds our very lives in his hands.

That is because there are still depths of the gospel that have not yet been revealed. There are plans, purposes, and dynamics of relationships that we have not yet perceived.

What we do know, who we are in Christ, matters much more than all the mysteries surrounding us. Once you have “the secret of Christ” ( Colossians 2:2 ) and have engaged with the Holy Spirit (who reveals the fullness of Christ), you can be confident that all of your deep questions and desires will be answered in God’s time.

There are still many secrets hidden in God, even about the future.

The Spirit of God is ready to reveal His secrets to you. He’s ready to open your eyes to the deep truths about who He is and what He has done, who you are and how to live as His child, and how the world works and who you are meant to be in it. It may sound like a lot, but if you spend time talking with Him, if you get down on your knees with your Bible, He will tell you what He wants for your life. And the awesome thing is that all this will happen when you are listening when you are paying attention. God’s secret whisper has been growing louder for all of us over the last few months, and now is the time for it to become real inside of us!

The heavens are not a closed book. God is waiting to reveal His deep secrets to those whose hearts are willing to receive them and obey. The next question you need to ask yourself...Are You Willing?

Holy Spirit, work Your secrets into my heart. Every day, show me more of You.

  • FROM THE WRONG SPIRIT

[A slave girl] followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.” ACTS 16:17

I recently read a story of a student at a Bible college who was scheduled to deliver a chapel message, and a truth was burning inside her. She was bothered by a false teaching that kept many from experiencing God’s best, and her chapel message seemed to be the right occasion to refute it. She prepared powerful points with plenty of scriptural evidence. But the night before her presentation, she couldn’t sleep. God spoke to her spirit: “Don’t preach that message. Your beliefs are right, but you are arguing your points from the wrong spirit. You aren’t speaking in love.” Disappointed, she gave an entirely different message about love  —and realized later how abrasive and alienating her planned message would have been.

It’s possible for someone to say the right things with the wrong attitude. The slave girl who followed Paul and Silas in Philippi is one example; she spoke the truth (generally) about these men, but she was filled with an agitating demonic spirit. Contentiousness, strife, pride, bitterness, and an obsession with proving a point can cause us to speak the right words while not representing God’s heart. Just as important as what we say to others or hear from God are the emotional and spiritual filters through which we say or hear it. The spirit behind a truth is as significant as the truth itself.

This student’s sensitivity to God’s voice spared her from an argument she might have won even while losing her audience. She was able to avoid alienating those who disagreed with her and to discuss her beliefs more winsomely later. In a sleepless night, God spoke to her clearly enough to redirect her, and she sensed His message clearly. When we bring our “right” perspectives to God, He shapes them to reflect not only His truth but also His heart.

Holy Spirit, give me that kind of sensitivity to Your voice  —not only to know Your truth but to know the heart behind it. Help me to believe and discuss what is right and to saturate my words with the right spirit.

  • INTERSECTION

These are the words of Jeremiah. . . . The LORD gave me this message. JEREMIAH 1:1, 4

God has spoken many times to many people, including the prophets and messengers of Scripture. And if we’re observant, we’ll notice an interesting phenomenon when we read the words of these messengers: They wrote with distinctive styles and personalities. They heard God’s voice and expressed it through their own individuality. Ezekiel’s prophecies sound like Ezekiel; Jeremiah’s sound like Jeremiah; Paul’s letters sound like Paul; and so on. It was God’s voice through their voices  —an intersection of the human and the divine.

That’s how God’s voice comes to us, too. We often expect Him to sound like a deep-voiced narrator with a Shakespearean accent, but that’s not His style. And when His voice comes bubbling up through our own inner thoughts, we discount it as our own self-talk. It sounds so much like our imagination or the wandering of our reckless ideas. Rarely do we remember that the Spirit flows from within us. He is not coming from the outside as an objective experience to be measured; He has infiltrated our minds and hearts and transformed them, and He speaks subjectively through them. As with the prophets of old, He sounds a lot like the person through whom He is speaking.

Our rationalist minds, steeped in Greek linear logic, may have trouble with this experience. We’re apt to say that the voice sounds like us because it is us. But apart from burning bushes and open visions, this is how God normally speaks. Our job is to discern which impulses within us are Spirit-inspired and which are not. Is that subjective? Of course. But all relationships are. We all communicate through filters of perceptions and feelings and past experiences. If we are to relate to God at all, it will have to be through a subjective conversation and intuitive perception of His Spirit. And we will have to trust the God who lives deep within us to speak to us there.

Lord, speak to my thoughts. Let me know which ones are Yours. Help me to discern the deep impulses of my heart that come from You  —and to believe them.

  • WHAT JESUS HAS DONE

For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. REVELATION 19:10, NKJV

We may have a hard time discerning some voices in our lives, but there’s one we can always know is God’s: a testimony of what Jesus has done. The enemy isn’t interested in highlighting Christ’s works, though he may try to distort them at times. And our human nature would rather give credit to ourselves. But when we hear a testimony of Jesus, we know God is speaking. There is power in the declaration of what Jesus has done, and it’s a power that isn’t directed only at commemorating the event. The goal is for the work to be reenacted or reapplied to our lives.

The testimony of Jesus is a prophetic message. The voice isn’t only saying, “Look at what I did!” He’s also saying, “I want to do this again!” The message is an invitation to believe in His power, His compassion, and His desire to miraculously intervene. Spiritual passivity may cause us to think, “I wish He would do that in my life,” but His invitation is greater than that. The response He encourages is, “I believe You will do this in my life.” When we hear a testimony of Christ’s restoration, we can have faith that He wants to restore something for us. When we hear a testimony of healing or provision, we can have faith that He wants to heal or provide. The testimony stirs up our faith, and it expresses His desire. When we hear what Jesus has done, we hear His longing to do more.

The testimony of Jesus, whether coming out of your mouth or someone else’s, is never just a memorial. It’s a living word. When you embrace it as such, it will be accompanied by God’s power in your life and the lives of others. His works will come alive in a new way. And His voice and His presence will become self-evident.

Jesus, help me to recognize the Holy Spirit in testimonies of Your work. Stir up my faith to accept Your testimonies as my invitations. Let me receive Your power and love every time I hear of what You have done.

  • LISTENING FOR GOD'S VOICE

I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe in him. EPHESIANS 1:19

God whispers. I know that doesn’t sound like the creative caricature of a deity who parted seas and parted the skies. And this isn’t just another poetic reference to audibility — though God does speak audibly.

It is a creative way of describing His initiative in communicating with us. When we listen for God’s voice, we generally listen to Him with limited expectations. We don’t mean to; we just don’t know how to open ourselves to anything and everything.

We need context, so we create one. But it’s often a narrower context than it ought to be. Like a radio receiver tuned to one station, we rule out all other signals. We place limits on what we think we might hear. And if God speaks outside of those limits, we may miss His message.

It’s interesting how much we limit ourselves in so many ways. It’s one thing to see that happening in other people, and quite another to notice it in oneself. Anyone else have that problem?

That’s where I have some trouble — seeing my own shortcomings more clearly than those in others. But one of the things I struggle with most is the ability to really listen to God when He speaks. Now don’t get me wrong, I feel like I’ve gotten better about acknowledging His presence and speaking truth into my life. However, there are still times that I can be pretty focused on what I want/need from Him rather than listen for His voice.

Actual, authentic Christianity is more than attending church, reading your Bible, saying "yes" to God, and thinking you're set for life. The biblical requirements for our lives are like a greenhouse. Our words need to be watered by His power so that they can grow into a harvestable amount of fruit.

When we are convinced of the true power of God's Word, we will see that it does the impossible. We will learn how to not just pray, but pray with boldness. We will listen for God and look forward to miracles. And, we will expect the unexpected...

Imagine what we could do for God if our “ears” were tuned to catch even 5 percent of the things He says. If we took just a few hours each week to slow down, to listen for Him, I think we would be shocked by the growth and fruitfulness that would begin to take place in our lives.

God, help me to understand the incredible greatness of Your power  —not just in theory but in every way it applies to my life. I want to walk in Your strength. I want my heart to be big enough for Your purposes. Please let me hear all You want to say.

  • HIS LIGHT WITHIN US

I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called. EPHESIANS 1:18

By nature, our hearts are darkened with discouragement and despair. Some people may be cheerier than others, but most go through some phase in which they ask whether life has any meaning, and many never arrive at a satisfying answer. We may hope for the best, but we frequently fear the worst. We search for purpose and fulfillment, often in desperate ways, filling ourselves with all kinds of substitutes for true joy. Anxieties about big, eternal questions nag at our souls, and unless we’re careful, cruelly leave us in the dark.

But God doesn’t leave us in the dark. He has sent His Spirit to shine into every corner of our souls and give us understanding about Him. He enlightens us in every way, even when we are carrying heavy burdens or going through painful times. If He turns on His light within us, the nagging questions and darkened thoughts dissipate. He doesn’t do battle with the darkness; He simply shines. And when He shines inside us, we can see clearly.

In God’s Kingdom, clear vision always gives hope. God is always optimistic, always heading somewhere good, always intent on working out the best for those who love Him. That’s why despair in the life of a Christian is always a misperception. It isn’t based in the reality of a God who shines. Our hope  —confident, unwavering expectation of His goodness  —can flourish when He floods our hearts with light.

Pray daily that God would shine into every corner of your life. Refuse to live in discouragement. Know that His voice will always inspire hope because it is always based in reality. And the reality is that He is building something beautiful in you.

Father of light, I need You to shine in me. I need to hear Your encouragement. Let my heart be flooded with Your brightness, and lift me higher to live in confident, life-giving hope.

  • A CLEAR PICURE OF GOD

I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. EPHESIANS 1:16-17

God’s voice always comes to us in some context. Are we in turmoil or anxiety when we listen for Him? Do we perceive Him as a demanding or hard Master? What does He want from us when He speaks? Is He on our side? Perceptions about God, dreams and desires for our own lives, thoughts about our current circumstances, and many more ideas condition the environment in which we hear. And that environment colors the lenses through which we see God and clutters the filters through which we hear Him.

But Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1 aims at breaking through the clutter of our thought life and giving us a clear picture of God. Some translations say “a spirit of wisdom and revelation,” emphasizing the divine help we need in order to know God. We have to grasp who He is  —the goodness of His heart toward us, His desire to lavish His gifts on us, the mission He holds close to Him at all times, and more. And though we can mentally understand His nature by reading His Word, that understanding doesn’t really sink in unless His Spirit comes with the key that unlocks our hearts. Truth has to be imparted to us. Knowing who God is can happen only when He unveils Himself to us. We need a revelation.

So Paul prays for wisdom and insight  —a spirit of revelation  —and we should too. Constantly. If we don’t have a revelation of His true nature, we may interpret all the information we get about Him through the wrong filter. We’ll know something of God, but we won’t know Him. But if He removes the veil from our hearts, we will see with spiritual vision. And His voice can flourish in that environment.

Lord, open my eyes to see You  —to really know in the depths of my soul who You are. May Your voice come to me from the purity of that place: uncorrupted, unbiased, and straight from Your heart to mine.
