WELCOME
The book of Lamentations is exactly what it sounds like: a book of grief, written after Jerusalem was destroyed, in the darkest chapter of Israel’s history. And right in the middle of that devastation, in that same book, the writer says something that sounds almost impossible. He says, “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. His compassions fail not; they are new every morning.”
He didn’t find hope because his circumstances changed. He found it because he made a decision, on purpose, to call something to mind in the middle of the worst season he’d ever lived through.
THIS IS FOR YOU IF...
You’re in a season dark enough that hope doesn’t come naturally anymore. You’re not looking for someone to tell you it’s not that bad. You need to know how to choose hope when the circumstances haven’t earned it yet.
Stay with me. Hope in the dark isn’t a feeling you wait for; it’s a decision you make, and I want to show you how.
BOTTOM LINE UP FRONTHope in the dark is not denial. It’s a decision to remember who God is when your circumstances have gone quiet about it.
OUR SPRINGBOARD FOR TODAY’S DISCUSSION IS:“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning, great is thy faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:21-23

MAIN MENTORING
Pay attention to where this verse sits. It’s not in a psalm of celebration. It’s in the middle of a book named for weeping, written by a man watching his whole city burn. If hope only showed up when things were going well, this verse wouldn’t exist. It exists because he chose it in the exact place where hope made the least sense.
Here’s the phrase that matters most: “This I recall to my mind.” That’s not a feeling that landed on him. That’s an act of will. He deliberately brought something to mind, on purpose, in the middle of grief that hadn’t lifted yet. What he recalled was God’s mercy and faithfulness, not because his circumstances proved it that day, but because he knew it was true regardless of what his circumstances were saying.
I want you to understand something about hope in a dark season: it rarely shows up as a spontaneous feeling. It shows up because you decided, on purpose, to remember something true and hold onto it, even while everything around you argues against it. “New every morning” doesn’t mean the darkness lifts every morning. It means God’s mercy doesn’t run out overnight, no matter how bad the night was.
You don’t have to wait for your circumstances to hand you hope. You can recall it to your mind right now, in whatever dark you’re standing in, and start again from there.
DAILY ACTION
Write down one thing that’s true about God’s character, regardless of your current circumstances. Recall it to your mind on purpose today, out loud, even if nothing around you has changed yet.
THE DAILY CHARGE
Stop waiting for hope to find you. Go get it, on purpose. Recall to your mind what’s true about God even when your circumstances haven’t said a word about it. His mercies are new this morning, whether you feel them yet or not.
LET’S PRAY
Father, this season is dark enough that hope doesn’t come easily anymore. Teach me to recall Your faithfulness on purpose, even when my circumstances haven’t caught up to it. Your compassions fail not; they are new this morning. Let me choose hope today, not because things changed, but because You haven’t. In Jesus’ name, amen.
