Nobody asks for trials. I’ve never once heard a person pray for a harder year. But James, writing to people getting scattered and persecuted for their faith, tells them to count it all joy when they fall into various trials. Not because the trials feel good. Because of what the trials are building.

I want to talk honestly today about endurance, because it’s not a word anybody gets excited about until they need it, and by then it’s too late to build it fast.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF...

You’re tired in a way that sleep doesn’t fix. You’ve been carrying something hard for long enough that you’ve started to wonder how much longer you can hold on, and you need a reason to keep going that’s bigger than gritting your teeth.

Stay with me. I want to show you what’s actually being built in you right now, even though it doesn’t feel like building. It feels like breaking.

MAIN MENTORING

James doesn’t say count it all joy because the trial itself is enjoyable. Nobody enjoys the trial. He says count it all joy because of what the trial produces, and the word he uses is patience, but the fuller meaning is closer to endurance, the ability to stay under pressure without collapsing or running.

Here’s what I’ve come to believe about endurance. It cannot be built any other way than through actual pressure. You cannot read your way into it. You cannot want your way into it. You cannot watch somebody else go through a trial and absorb their endurance secondhand. It only gets built the way muscle gets built, under real weight, over real time, with no shortcuts available.

That means the exhausting season you’re in right now, the one that feels like it’s wearing you down instead of building you up, might actually be doing both at the same time. It’s wearing down what needed to go, and it’s building up what needed to grow. James says let patience have her perfect work. Let it finish. Don’t bail out of the trial early because it’s uncomfortable, because cutting it short doesn’t just spare you pain, it also cuts short what the pain was building.

You are not the same person you were before this trial started. Some of that change has been hard. Some of it is the exact strength you’re going to need for what’s coming next, and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

DAILY ACTION

Name one way you’ve already changed since this trial started that you’d call growth, not just damage. Thank God specifically for that growth today, even in the middle of the hard part.

THE DAILY CHARGE

Don’t cut this trial short looking for relief. Let it finish what it’s building. The endurance forming in you right now cannot be built any faster or any easier, and you are going to need it. Stay under the weight. You are being built, not broken.

LET’S PRAY

Father, this season has worn me down more than I expected, and I’ve been tempted to look for the fastest way out instead of trusting the process. Teach me to let this trial finish its work in me. Build the endurance I’m going to need. Help me see growth where I’ve only been able to see exhaustion. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Moses spent forty years in the desert tending somebody else’s sheep before God ever spoke to him from a burning bush. Forty years. He had a calling on his life the whole time, and for four decades it looked like absolutely nothing was happening. Then one ordinary day, tending the same flock he’d tended for years, God told him to take off his sandals because the ground he was standing on was holy.

I want you to hear that. The holy ground wasn’t a mountaintop moment. It was an ordinary hillside, in the middle of the waiting, in the middle of what looked like nothing.

Forty years is a long time to tend somebody else’s sheep. Moses had already tried to do things his own way once, killed a man, ran for his life, and spent the next four decades in obscurity, watching animals in the wilderness. If you’d asked him at year twenty whether God had a plan for him, I doubt he felt like the answer was yes.

But look at what God says the moment He finally speaks. Not, welcome back, or, sorry that took so long. He says take your shoes off, this ground is holy. Meaning the ground Moses had been standing on that whole time, in the waiting, in the sheep fields, in the years that looked like nothing, was never empty space. It was the exact place God was preparing him.

Here’s what I need you to understand about your own waiting room. Every skill you’re building right now, every character trait you’re developing under pressure, every ounce of patience you’re being forced to grow, that’s not wasted time while you wait for the real thing to start. That is the real thing. God doesn’t waste seasons. He uses them, even the ones that feel like nothing, to build the exact man or woman who’s going to be ready when the calling finally speaks from the bush.

You don’t get to skip the sheep fields and go straight to the burning bush. Nobody does. The waiting is not the delay of your purpose. It’s part of it.

DAILY ACTION

Think about what you’ve learned in the season you’re currently in, even if it feels like waiting. Write down one thing this season has built in you that you didn’t have before. Thank God for it today, even before the waiting ends.

THE DAILY CHARGE

Take your shoes off. Wherever you’re standing right now, even if it feels like the most ordinary, overlooked, forgotten place in your whole life, God is doing something there. Stop waiting to honor the ground until the burning bush shows up. The ground is already holy.

LET’S PRAY

Father, this waiting has felt like nothing for so long, and I’ve started to wonder if You forgot. Show me what You’re building in me right now, in this ordinary season, before the calling ever speaks. Help me honor this ground instead of resenting it. I trust that You don’t waste seasons, and I trust You with mine. In Jesus’ name, amen.

They threw the three men in bound, and the king watched, and then he jumped up in shock and asked his advisors a question that should stop you cold. Didn’t we throw three men in? I see four. And the fourth looked like the Son of God.

Faith that only exists in your head is theory. Faith gets real the moment you’re actually in the fire and you find out whether God shows up the way He said He would. That’s what happened to these three men, and it’s what’s happening to you right now.

Look at what the king saw. Not three men suffering. Four men walking around, unbound, untouched by the flames, and one of them looked like the Son of God. The fire that was supposed to destroy them became the exact place where God showed up in a way He never had before.

I’ll be honest with you. Some of the realest experiences I’ve ever had with God happened in the worst seasons of my life. Not the comfortable ones. The furnace ones. Because comfort doesn’t require faith. Comfort just requires you to keep showing up. Fire requires you to actually believe something, and it’s in that moment of actually believing, under real pressure, that faith stops being a Sunday morning idea and becomes the thing holding your life together.

Peter says the trial of your faith is more precious than gold. Not the faith itself, the trial of it. The proving of it. Gold that’s never been through fire hasn’t been proven yet. It might be real, it might not, nobody knows until the heat hits it. Your faith works the same way. This furnace isn’t evidence God abandoned you. It’s the place where what you believe gets to become what you know.

And here’s the part that should give you chills. They weren’t alone in there. Neither are you. The fourth man was already standing in the flames before they ever hit the ground.

DAILY ACTION

Name one thing you’ve said you believed about God for years but have never actually been tested on. Ask Him today to meet you in the fire you’re in now the way He met those three men, and thank Him in advance that you’re not walking through it alone.

THE DAILY CHARGE

Quit treating this fire like proof God left. It’s the proof that’s about to show up. What you believed in theory is about to become what you know for certain, and you are not walking through those flames by yourself.

LET’S PRAY

Father, I’ve said I believed You for years without ever really being tested on it. Now I’m in the fire and I want to know You’re really here. Meet me the way You met them. Let this trial prove what’s real in me instead of destroying it. Thank You that I’m not walking through these flames alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Three men stood in front of a king who could kill them with a word. He’d already built the furnace. He’d already turned up the heat seven times hotter than normal. And before they were ever thrown in, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego said something I want you to sit with today. They said God was able to deliver them. Then they said, but if not, we still won’t bow.

That second part is the part most of us skip. We’re comfortable saying God can. We get quiet when it comes to saying we’ll trust Him even if He doesn’t.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF...

You’ve been praying for God to put the fire out, and it hasn’t gone out yet. You believe He’s able. What you’re wrestling with is whether you can still trust Him if the answer is no, or the answer is not yet.

Stay with me. This is the difference between trusting God’s power and trusting God’s character, and today we’re going to talk about why the second one is the one that actually holds you together.

I want you to notice the order of what these three men said. First, our God is able. Second, but if not. They didn’t lead with the fallback position. They led with confidence in who God is. The but if not came after, as the anchor underneath that confidence, not a replacement for it.

Here’s what I’ve had to learn the hard way. If your trust in God only survives as long as He answers the way you asked, that’s not trust. That’s a transaction. Real trust says God is who He says He is whether this fire ends the way I want or not. That kind of trust doesn’t wait to find out the outcome before it decides to stay faithful.

Think about what they were actually risking. Not a bruise. Not an inconvenience. A furnace heated seven times hotter than normal, hot enough that the soldiers who threw them in were killed by the heat at the door. They didn’t know if they were walking out. They said it anyway.

That’s the trust this season is trying to build in you. Not the shallow kind that only shows up when the outcome is guaranteed. The kind that says I’m staying faithful in this fire whether or not I ever fully understand why it’s here.

DAILY ACTION

Say this out loud today, about whatever fire you’re standing in: God is able to change this. But if He doesn’t change it on my timeline, I’m still His. Say it once out loud, even if your voice shakes on the second half.

THE DAILY CHARGE

Stop making your trust conditional on the outcome you want. Decide now, before you know how this ends, that you’re staying faithful either way. That’s not resignation. That’s the strongest thing you’ll ever say to a fire.

LET’S PRAY

Father, You are able to change what I’m facing. I believe that. But teach me the second half of this trust, the part that says I’ll stay faithful even if You don’t move the way I’m asking. Build that kind of trust in me. Let my faith be planted in who You are, not just in what I want You to do. In Jesus’ name, amen.

My child,

I know this season feels like more than you can hold. I’m not writing to a category today. I’m writing to the son standing in a fire he didn’t ask for, and to the daughter carrying weight nobody else in her house can see, and to the young one already old enough to wonder where I went. Wherever you are reading this from, this letter is for you.

Last month I reminded you who you are. Mine, carrying my authority, walking in my confidence. Now I want to show you what that identity is made of when it’s tested. This is a season of refining, and I want you to hear it from Me before you hear it from your circumstances.

I see the heat you’re standing in, and I have not left you in that fire. I am the one who lit it, and I am the one standing in it with you.

You were not made for a life of ease. You were made for glory, and glory is forged, not handed out. When I put gold and silver through the refiner’s fire, I am not punishing the metal. I am removing what does not belong so what remains can shine the way it was always meant to.

That is what I am doing in you this month.

I know you have asked why this is taking so long. I know you have wondered if I am even paying attention. I have never once looked away. A refiner does not walk away from the fire. He sits beside it, watching closely, because the moment matters too much to leave unattended. That is what I am doing with you right now. I am not distant. I am close, watching, adjusting the heat with more precision than you could imagine, because I know exactly what you can carry and exactly what needs to be removed.

The impurities you are losing in this season, the fear, the pride, the self-reliance, the old patterns you have leaned on instead of leaning on Me, they were never meant to stay. I am not trying to break you. I am trying to reveal you. The one I made you to be is already inside you, and this fire is how I bring that person to the surface.

Do not rush this. Do not resent it. Trust it. This is what we will walk through together for the next thirty days, one fire at a time, one lesson at a time, until you come out able to see what was actually being made in you.

One day you will look back at this season and see it for what it actually was, not punishment, but preparation. Not abandonment, but attention. I was never more present than I was right here, in the heat, with you.

Stay in the fire a little longer. I am not done, and what I am making is going to be worth it.

Job lost everything in one afternoon. His children, his wealth, his health, gone before sundown. He sat in the ashes scraping his sores with a piece of broken pottery, and for a long stretch of that book, God says nothing. Not a word. That’s not a footnote in the story. That’s the story.

I want to be clear about who I’m talking to today, because this isn’t just a message for men and it isn’t just a message for women. It’s for anyone old enough to know what it feels like to hurt and keep going anyway, husbands and wives, single parents, teenagers carrying more than their friends know, grandparents in a season they didn’t expect. We’re closing one chapter and opening another. All of July we talked about identity and authority, who you are in Christ and the confidence that comes from knowing whose you are. That was the foundation. Now we test it. This month our focus turns to Refinement, Trials, and Trust, and I’m not going to soften what that means. Expect us to talk honestly about pain that doesn’t resolve on schedule, waiting seasons that stretch longer than you wanted, and what it looks like to trust God when everything in front of you says you shouldn’t.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF...

You’re in a season right now that doesn’t make sense. You’ve prayed and it feels like the words hit the ceiling and stopped there. Job never got an explanation. He got God. That’s the detail we rush past. Everything stripped from him in a day, and in the middle of it he says God knows the way he’s taking. He couldn’t see it. He couldn’t feel it. He said it anyway.

I’ll be honest with you about something. The seasons I’ve felt most abandoned by God were not seasons where I had done something wrong. They were seasons where I was doing everything right and it still didn’t work the way I expected. That messes with a person. You start keeping score, wondering what you missed, when the truth is you didn’t miss anything. The fire wasn’t a punishment. It was a process, and the process doesn’t explain itself while it’s happening.

Understand what’s actually going on in a season like this. The silence is not God turning away from you. It’s God working under the surface, in a place you’re not able to see yet. Gold isn’t refined sitting on a shelf. It’s refined under heat, under pressure, under exactly the conditions that make you want to quit.

Here’s what your instinct tells you when the fire won’t let up and heaven feels quiet: you assume you did something wrong, or you assume God moved on. Look at Job’s words again. He knoweth the way that I take. God wasn’t lost. Job was the one who couldn’t see the map. God had known where this was going from the first day.

Hear this clearly, whoever you are, wherever this finds you. The silence you’re standing in is not proof that God left. It’s proof that something valuable is being formed in you, and that kind of work has never once happened loud. It happens deep, out of sight, on a timeline you don’t get to see in advance. That’s what this whole month is going to be, walking with you through the fire until you can look back and see exactly what it built.

DAILY ACTION

Write down one thing you’re walking through right now where God feels silent. Underneath it, write Job 23:10. Say it out loud once this morning, once tonight. Let the words remind you the fire has a purpose, even on the days you can’t see it.

THE DAILY CHARGE

Hear me. You are not powerless in this fire, and you are not forgotten in it. Quit treating the silence like evidence against you. Take up the posture Job took, hands empty, heart honest, still trusting the One who knows the way you’re taking even when you can’t see three feet in front of you. Stop demanding an explanation for the fire. Start trusting the One who lit it.

LET’S PRAY

Father, I don’t understand this season, and I don’t like how quiet it feels. But You know the way I’m taking even when I can’t see it myself. Do Your work in me. Refine what needs to be refined. Give me the strength to stay faithful in this heat, and remind me that Your silence has never once meant Your absence. In Jesus’ name, amen.

John says it in one clear line. We are God’s children now. Not someday, not once we grow enough, not when we finally get it together. Now. That is the truth this whole month was built to settle in you, and it does not run out when the calendar turns.

Look back at the ground you have covered. You belong to God. You have a Father who adopted you and delights in you. You carry authority, and it is meant to bend down and serve. You have a purpose that was written before you were born, and you are already sent into the life you are living. You are a friend of Jesus, someone He prayed for by name, someone He would leave ninety-nine to find. And when you fall, your name still holds.

None of that was meant to be a good feeling for a few weeks. It was meant to become the ground you stand on for the rest of your life. The danger now is the same one that follows every real breakthrough. It fades. The noise comes back, the accuser starts talking again, and slowly you drift back to living like an orphan when you were made a son.

So here is how you keep it. You do not white-knuckle it. You return to it. Every morning, before the day tells you who you are, you remind yourself who God already said you are. You come to Him bold, you stay connected to the vine, and you walk out the door as a son, whether you feel like one that day or not.

August is coming, and with it new ground to cover. But you do not enter it as a beginner. You enter it settled. You know who you are now. So walk out today, and every day after, and simply be it.

DAILY ACTIONWrite down, in one sentence, who you are in Christ after this month. Keep it somewhere you will see it every morning. Before the day tells you who you are, read it and walk out as that.

THE DAILY CHARGEThis month was never meant to be a feeling that fades by next week. It was meant to become the ground you stand on for good. You are God’s child now. A son, an heir, a friend of Jesus, sent and delighted in. That does not expire when July does. So do not leave it behind. Return to it every morning, remind yourself before the day can, and walk out the door as who you already are. Now go and be it.

LET’S PRAYFather, thank You for everything You settled in me this month. That I am Your child now, adopted, delighted in, sent, and held even when I fall. I do not want this to fade. Help me return to it every single morning, before the day gets a chance to tell me who I am. Keep me close to You so it stays real. And as I step into what comes next, let me walk out the door as who You already made me to be. I am Yours. Help me live like it, all the way through. Amen.

MAIN MENTORING

Look at where Isaiah is when he answers. He has just seen God in overwhelming holiness, and moments earlier he was undone by his own unworthiness. He said he was a man of unclean lips. He felt the opposite of qualified. Then God touched him, dealt with his guilt, and the very next thing out of Isaiah’s mouth when God asks for a volunteer is, send me.

He does not say send me once I am ready. He does not ask what the assignment is first, or whether he is capable of it, or how it will turn out. He just says yes. Here I am. He offers himself before he knows a single detail.

That is what God is looking for. Not people who have it all together. Willing people. People who will say yes to Him before they can see the whole road. Isaiah was as flawed as anyone, and God used him for the rest of his life, because he answered.

Most of us stay quiet at exactly this point. We hear God ask, we feel the nudge, and we hesitate because we are waiting to feel qualified. But the qualification was never the point. Isaiah did not become worthy and then volunteer. He was made willing, and he opened his mouth.

So the question is on the table for you too. God is still asking who will go. You do not have to have the whole thing figured out. You just have to be willing to say the words and mean them. Have your answer ready today.

DAILY ACTIONAsk God today where He is trying to send you, and instead of listing why you are not ready, answer Him. Say it out loud. Here I am, send me. Then take the first step He shows you.

THE DAILY CHARGEGod is still asking the same question He asked Isaiah. Whom shall I send. And He is not looking for the qualified. He is looking for the willing. Isaiah answered before he knew the assignment, flaws and all, and God used him for a lifetime. So stop waiting to feel ready. When you hear Him ask, have your answer ready. Here I am. Send me. Say it, and mean it, and go.

LET’S PRAYFather, I have heard You asking and I have stayed quiet, waiting to feel qualified before I volunteered. I see now that willingness was always what You wanted, not perfection. Deal with my fear the way You dealt with Isaiah’s guilt, and put the answer in my mouth. Here I am. Send me. I do not need to see the whole road. I just need to say yes to You. So here is my yes. Lead me, and I will go. Amen.

MAIN MENTORING

Look at the order Jesus put things in. He gives the biggest command imaginable, go and reach the whole world, and He knows it is far more than these few ordinary people can handle. So He does not leave them with the weight of it. He ends with a promise. I am with you always, to the very end.

That promise is the load-bearing wall under everything. Every command He ever gave, every hard thing He asked, all of it rests on this. You are not being sent out to do it in your own strength and hope you are enough. You are being sent out with Him, and His presence is what makes an impossible assignment possible.

We forget this constantly. We look at what God has called us to and we feel the size of it and we panic, because we are measuring it against ourselves. We were never supposed to measure it against ourselves. The question was never whether you are enough. The question is whether He is with you, and He said He is.

Notice the word always. Not sometimes. Not when you have it together. Always, to the end of the age. On your strong days and your worst ones, in the ordinary moments and the overwhelming ones, He is there. The one who commissioned you never once leaves your side.

So whatever feels too big today, put it back in the right frame. You are not carrying it alone. He is with you. That is the promise that holds everything else up.

So stop measuring the calling against your own strength. You were never enough on your own, and you were never meant to be. He is with you, on your best day and your hardest one, all the way to the end. Go, knowing you do not go alone.

LET’S PRAYJesus, I have felt so alone in what You have called me to, and it has felt far too big for someone like me. Thank You that the promise was never that I would be enough. The promise was that You would be with me. Always. Help me stop measuring the assignment against my own strength and start trusting that You are right here. Give me courage to take the next step, knowing I never take it by myself. Amen.

MAIN MENTORING

Notice the tense. You are the light of the world. Present, settled, already true. Jesus is not handing you an assignment to go earn. He is telling you a fact about who you became when He came into you.

Then He points at the obvious problem. Nobody lights a lamp and hides it under a basket. That would defeat the whole point of a lamp. Yet that is exactly what a lot of us do with our faith. We keep it dim. We keep it private. We tuck it under the basket of not wanting to stand out, not wanting to be judged, not wanting to make anyone uncomfortable.

Jesus says take the basket off. Let it shine. And watch the reason He gives, because it is not about you looking good. He says let it shine so that people would see and give glory to your Father. The light was never meant to draw attention to you. It points past you, to Him.

That takes the pressure off in a way worth noticing. You do not have to be impressive. You just have to stop hiding. A lamp does not strain to shine. It simply stops being covered, and the light does what light does.

So think about the basket you have been keeping over your life. The fear, the caution, the wanting to blend in. Take it off. Someone around you is in the dark, and you are carrying the light they need to see.

DAILY ACTIONName the basket you keep over your light, the specific fear that keeps you dim. Today, in one situation, take it off. Let your faith show in a place you normally would have kept it hidden.

THE DAILY CHARGEJesus already settled it. You are the light of the world. You do not have to work it up or earn it, and you do not get to keep it hidden under a basket of fear and comfort. Someone near you is sitting in the dark. So take the cover off. Let your light shine, not to be seen yourself, but so people see your Father. Shine today.

LET’S PRAYJesus, thank You that You already made me light. I have kept it hidden for so long, dimming myself down so I would not stand out or make anyone uncomfortable. Forgive me. Take the basket off. Help me let my light shine today, not so people look at me, but so they see You. Give me courage to stop hiding in the one place I have been keeping You quiet. Amen.
