MAIN MENTORING

Read where He is when He prays this. Judas has already left to betray Him. The cross is hours away. Jesus knows exactly what is coming, and this is what He chooses to do with the time. He prays.

He prays for the men in the room first. Then He widens it. Not for these only, He says, but for all who would ever believe through their word. That is you. Two thousand years away and He reached forward and gathered you into the prayer.

Sit with what that means about His heart. On the night He had every reason to think only about His own suffering, He was thinking about you. Not the crowd in general. You, specifically, the person reading this, one of the ones who would believe down the line. He carried you into that prayer before you knew His name.

We spend so much energy wondering if God even notices us. Here is your answer, spoken out loud in the most important prayer ever prayed. He noticed you before you were born. He asked the Father for you before you asked Him for anything.

So the next time you feel overlooked, go back to that room. The Son of God, on His way to the cross, stopped and prayed for you. You have never once been forgotten by Him.

My child,

I want to tell you something I have been trying to say all your life, and I want to say it plainly today.

I did not wait for you to clean yourself up. I did not stand back to see if you would prove yourself worth the trouble. While you were still in the middle of your worst, still running, still hiding, still sure I could never want you, I came. That is when I sent My Son. Not after you improved. In the middle of it.

You have spent this month learning who you are to Me. A friend of Jesus. A son. Someone I would leave ninety-nine to go find. And I know that part of you has been quietly doing the math, wondering if you were really worth the trip.

So let Me answer you. If you had been the only one, I would have come anyway. The cross was not a bulk decision. My Son knew your name when He went. He had you in mind, specifically you, with everything I know about you, all of it, the things you have hidden and the things you have not forgiven yourself for. He carried it all and He went willingly, because I wanted you home.

Stop trying to earn what I already spent everything to give you. There is nothing left to prove. The price is paid. The door is open. My arms have been open the whole time.

And when you fall again, and you will, do not run from Me. Run to Me. I am not surprised by your weakness. I never was. I loved you knowing all of it, and that love does not lift when you fail. I am gentle. I am lowly. And I am for you.

You have been so hard on yourself, My child. Let Me be the one who tells you the truth about who you are. You are Mine. You were worth every step My Son took. And if it had only been you, He would have taken every one of them still.

Rest today. You are loved all the way through.

A meal. A visit. A cup of water. He put Himself right there, in the things nobody is watching.

MAIN MENTORING

Jesus lists the things that count, and every one of them is ordinary. Food for someone hungry. Water for someone thirsty. A welcome for a stranger. Clothes for someone with none. A visit to someone sick, and a visit to someone in prison. Nothing on that list would make the news.

Then He says the thing that should stop you in your tracks. When you did it for them, you did it for Me. He puts Himself inside the encounter. The person in front of you who has nothing to give back, the one nobody notices, the one it costs you something to help, Jesus says He is there.

Look at how the righteous respond in the story. They are confused. They ask when they ever saw Him hungry or thirsty. They were not keeping score, and they were not doing it to be seen. They just loved people, and it turned out they had been loving Him the whole time.

That is what Kingdom work usually looks like. Not a stage. A phone call to someone who is lonely. Sitting with a person nobody else sits with. Quietly meeting a need without telling anyone you did.

You have been waiting for a purpose big enough to matter. It has been standing in front of you the whole time, wearing an ordinary face, and Jesus says He is in it.

DAILY ACTIONDo one thing today for someone who cannot pay you back, and tell no one you did it. Choose the person the world would overlook.

THE DAILY CHARGEJesus put Himself in the hungry, the stranger, the sick, and the forgotten, and He said that whatever you do for them, you do for Him. The Kingdom work is not on a stage. It is in the phone call, the meal, the visit, the small unseen kindness nobody will ever applaud. So stop waiting for something big enough to matter. Look at the person in front of you. He is right there.

MAIN MENTORING

Jesus told this story to religious people who were complaining that He spent time with the wrong crowd. His answer was a picture of a shepherd counting his sheep, finding one missing, and going out into the dark after it.

Notice what the shepherd does not do. He does not shrug and say he still has ninety-nine. He does not wait at the gate hoping the sheep works up the courage to come home. He goes after it, and Jesus adds two words that carry everything. Until he finds it. There is no giving up in that sentence.

And when he finds it, he does not scold it or drive it back with a stick. He puts it on his shoulders and carries it home, and Jesus says he does it rejoicing. Then he calls his neighbors together because he is so glad. That is the picture Jesus paints of how heaven feels about one wanderer coming home.

If you have drifted, and some of you have, hear what this means. You do not have to crawl back and hope He takes you. He is already out looking. The whole reason He told this story was to defend the fact that He goes to people the religious crowd had written off.

You are the one He would leave ninety-nine to find. Let Him carry you home.

DAILY ACTIONIf you have wandered somewhere, stop running today. Say so out loud to Him. Let Him find you, and let Him carry you instead of trying to walk it back on your own strength.

THE DAILY CHARGEJesus does not stand at the gate waiting to see if you find your own way home. He goes out into the dark after the one, and He keeps going until He finds it. Then He picks it up and carries it back rejoicing. You are that one. So stop running, stop hiding, and let yourself be found. He is already coming.

LET’S PRAYJesus, I have wandered, and I assumed You had moved on without me. I thought I was too small to be missed. Thank You that You go after the one. Thank You that You come looking, that You do not give up, and that You carry the ones You find. I stop running now. Come find me, and carry me home. Amen.

He saw them. And Matthew says He had compassion, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

MAIN MENTORING

Watch the order. He saw, then He felt, then He acted. Right after this verse He tells His followers to pray for workers, and then He sends them out. Everything He does for those people flows out of what happened when He looked at them.

And notice how He saw them. Harassed and helpless. Not lazy, not annoying, not obstacles in His day. He looked past the noise and the demands and saw wounded people with nobody leading them well. He saw the exhaustion under the behavior.

We usually see the behavior and stop there. The rude driver. The difficult coworker. The family member who keeps disappointing us. We feel our reaction and we move on. Jesus looked at the same kind of crowd, people who wanted things from Him, people who would later turn on Him, and His heart went out to them.

The word Matthew uses for compassion is a gut word. It describes something that moves you in your insides. This was not polite sympathy. This was a heart breaking open. And it is what set everything else in motion.

So if you want to know where your Kingdom purpose actually begins, it begins here. Not with a strategy or a platform. With asking Jesus to let you see people the way He sees them. Ask Him for that today, and be ready, because once you start seeing people the way He does, you will not be able to walk past them the same way again.

DAILY ACTIONPick one person who normally irritates you. Look at them today and ask God to show you what is underneath. Ask for His compassion, and let it change how you treat them.

THE DAILY CHARGEJesus looked at a crowd of demanding, difficult people and His heart broke for them. He saw the exhaustion underneath the behavior, and everything He did for them started there. Your purpose begins in the same place. So ask Him for His eyes today. Look at the people around you until you see them the way He does, and then do not walk past.

LET’S PRAYJesus, I look at people and see problems where You see sheep without a shepherd. I have been irritated by the very people You would have had compassion on. Give me Your eyes. Break my heart for the people You put in front of me today. Let me see what is underneath, and let that change what I do about it. Amen.

MAIN MENTORING

This is the only place in the Gospels where Jesus tells us about His own heart. He could have described Himself a hundred ways. He said gentle and lowly. That is what He is like on the inside, toward you, right now.

Read who He invites. All who labor and are heavy laden. He is not calling the rested and the strong. He is calling the ones dragging. The ones who have been carrying more than they can hold, some of it their own doing, some of it handed to them by other people, some of it religious weight nobody was ever meant to carry.

Then He offers a yoke, which sounds like more work until you notice what a yoke actually is. It is a beam that joins two animals so they pull together, and the stronger one carries the load. He is not adding to your burden. He is stepping under it with you. That is why He can call it easy and light. You are not pulling it alone anymore.

Most of us have some version of Jesus in our heads that is stricter than He is. Arms crossed, mildly disappointed, waiting for us to try harder. That picture is a lie, and it will exhaust you. The real Jesus stands in front of tired people and says come.

So come. Not once you get your strength back. Now, in the tiredness, with everything you have been dragging. He is gentle. He is lowly. And He has rest for you.

DAILY ACTIONName one thing you have been carrying that Jesus never asked you to carry. Bring it to Him today, out loud, and leave it with Him.

THE DAILY CHARGEJesus told us His own heart, and He said He is gentle and lowly. He is not waiting for you to get strong before He will have you. He calls the worn out and the heavy laden, and He steps under the load Himself. So put down what He never handed you. Come to Him tired, come to Him as you are, and let Him give you the rest He promised.

LET’S PRAYJesus, I am tired, and I have been carrying things You never asked me to carry. I have pictured You as harder than You are, and it has worn me down. Thank You for telling me Your heart. John says Jesus knew the Father had put all things into His hands. Then he tells you what Jesus did with all that power. He got up, took off His robe, and washed feet.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF…You picture authority as standing above people rather than kneeling in front of them. If you have wanted influence more than you have wanted to serve. If you have never let the way Jesus used His power shape the way you use yours.

The King with everything in His hands knelt down. That is the pattern.

Jesus held all authority and used it to wash feet. Kingdom authority always bends toward serving. Use what God gave you the way Jesus used what He had.

MAIN MENTORING

Look at how John writes it. He tells you what Jesus knew before he tells you what Jesus did, and the two lines are joined on purpose. Jesus knew who He was. He knew where He came from and where He was going. He knew the Father had handed Him everything. And out of that security, He knelt on the floor and washed the dirt off the feet of men who would abandon Him within hours.

Foot washing was the lowest job in the house. It was given to the servant nobody else outranked. Jesus took it. He did not do it because He had no other options or because He needed to prove something. He did it because He knew exactly who He was, and a settled man can kneel without losing anything.

That is the whole lesson for the authority you have been learning about all month. It does not exist so you can rise above people. It exists so you can bend down and lift them. Insecure people grab authority to feel bigger. Secure people spend it on whoever needs it. Jesus was the most secure man who ever lived, and He spent His authority on a basin and a towel.

He said it plainly afterward. He gave them an example so they would do the same thing. Not admire it, do it. So the question today is simple. Who in your life needs their feet washed? Where can you use what God gave you to serve somebody who cannot pay you back?

Take the position Jesus took. It is a lot lower than you would choose. It is also the only place His kind of authority ever operates.

DAILY ACTIONFind one low, unglamorous act of service today, the kind nobody will notice or thank you for, and do it on purpose. Serve one person who cannot repay you.

THE DAILY CHARGEJesus had every bit of authority in existence in His hands, and He used it to kneel on a floor and wash feet. That is what Kingdom authority does. It bends down. So stop reaching for a higher place. Take the towel. Serve the person in front of you, and use what God gave you the same way Jesus used what He had.

LET’S PRAYJesus, You had everything in Your hands and You knelt down anyway. I have wanted authority so I could stand taller, and You used Yours to get lower. Forgive me. Make me secure enough in who I am to kneel without feeling like I lost something. Show me who needs serving today, and give me the willingness to pick up the towel. Amen.

He told them He would not call them servants anymore. He called them friends. And He meant it.

MAIN MENTORING

A servant works for the master. A friend is let into what the master is doing. Jesus says that plainly. The servant does not know his master’s business, and then He tells them that He has told them everything the Father gave Him. He opened the whole thing up. He let them in.

That is the difference He is drawing. He is not lowering the standard or making the relationship casual. He is bringing them close. Three years of walking together, and this is what He says it was all for. He wanted friends.

We have a hard time receiving that. Servant feels safer. It keeps a manageable distance and lets us stay in a relationship we understand, one where we work and He accepts the work. Friendship asks for more. Friendship means He wants your company, your honesty, your presence, and not only your output.

Look at how He lived it. He ate with people. He asked them questions. He wept at a friend’s grave. He cooked breakfast on a beach for the man who had denied Him. None of that is the behavior of a distant master collecting labor. That is the heart of a friend who wanted to be near.

So the distance you have been keeping from Him was never His idea. He closed it Himself. He said the word out loud on the hardest night of His life, when He had every reason to talk about something else. He wanted His people to know what they were to Him before everything fell apart.

You are His friend. Not on your best day. Today.

DAILY ACTIONTalk to Jesus today the way you would talk to a friend. Not a formal report, not a list of requests. Tell Him one true thing about how you actually are, and stay there a minute.

THE DAILY CHARGEJesus looked at ordinary men on His last night and refused to call them servants. He called them friends, and He calls you the same thing. So stop working for a nearness He already gave you. Come close today. Tell Him the truth. Sit with Him like someone who has been welcomed in, because you have been.

LET’S PRAYJesus, I have kept my distance from You for a long time and called it respect. I worked for You when what You wanted was to walk with me. Thank You for calling me Your friend. Help me believe it enough to come close. Teach me to bring You my real self and not just my effort. I want to know You, and I want to enjoy You, the way a friend does. Amen.

My child,

You have spent this whole month learning who you are to Me. A son. An heir. An ambassador. Someone I gave authority and purpose and a place in My family. All of that is true. But today I want to tell you something underneath all of it, something I’m afraid you’ve never quite believed.

I delight in you. Not in the finished version of you, the one you keep trying to become before you’ll let yourself rest. You. The one reading this right now, unfinished, still stumbling in places, still working things out. I am not tapping My foot waiting for you to get it together. I rejoice over you already, today, as you are.

I know how you see it. You think of yourself as My project. Something I’m fixing, improving, correcting, always a little disappointed with until the repairs are done. So you come to Me braced for the next critique, sure I must be as frustrated with you as you are with yourself. My child, hear Me. You are not My project. You are My delight. There is a difference, and I want you to feel it all the way down.

Read what I said through the prophet. I rejoice over you with gladness. I quiet you by My love. I exult over you with loud singing. Those are not the words of a God managing a difficult case. Those are the words of a Father who can’t contain how glad He is that you’re His. I sing over you. Did you know that? When you’re too tired to pray, too discouraged to feel anything, sitting in the wreckage of another hard day, I am there in your midst, singing over you like a father over a sleeping child.

You have worked so hard this month to understand your standing with Me, and I love that you’ve pursued it. But I don’t want you to walk away thinking My love is something you finally figured out how to earn. You didn’t earn it. You couldn’t. It was never for sale. I delighted in you before you understood any of this, and I’ll delight in you on the days you forget all of it.

So rest today. Not because you’ve arrived, but because you’re already loved by a Father who isn’t waiting on your improvement to be glad about you. Let Me quiet you. Let Me sing over you. Stop performing for a delight you already have.

You are not My project. You are My child, and you are My joy.

MAIN MENTORING

Jesus reaches for the plainest picture He can find. A vine and its branches. And He puts you in the picture as the branch, which is a humbling place to be, because a branch has no life of its own. Cut it off from the vine and it doesn’t slow down or weaken gradually. It dies, because it was never the source of anything. Everything it produces, every leaf, every piece of fruit, came through it from the vine. The branch’s only job is to stay attached and let the life flow.

That word abide is the whole secret. It means to remain, to stay, to make your home in Him. Not to visit occasionally. Not to check in when you need something. To live connected. And Jesus is blunt about what happens when you don’t. Apart from me you can do nothing. Not a little something on your own steam. Nothing. All the effort, all the striving, all the trying harder in the world produces exactly nothing of lasting value when you’re disconnected from the Source.

This exposes something that trips up a lot of sincere people, and it’s worth naming honestly. We hear about authority and purpose and fruitfulness, and our instinct is to go produce it. Try harder. Push more. Manufacture the results through sheer effort. But Jesus flips the whole thing. The branch that bears much fruit isn’t the one straining and grunting to produce. It’s the one that abides. It stays connected, and the fruit comes as a natural result of the life flowing through it. Your job was never to generate the power. Your job is to stay plugged into the One who has it.

Now think back over this entire month with that in mind. Your identity, your sonship, your authority, your purpose, every bit of it flows from one relationship. You are a son because you’re connected to the Father through Christ. You have authority because it flows down through that connection. You bear fruit because His life runs through you. Cut off from Him, none of it functions. It’s all vine-life, flowing through the branch, and the branch that forgets this and tries to live on its own withers no matter how hard it works.

So here’s the shift, and it may be the most important one of the month. When you feel dry, empty, powerless, your instinct is to grit down and try harder. The answer is almost always the opposite. Get back to the vine. Stay closer. Abide. Return to prayer, to His Word, to His presence, to the connection you let go slack. The fruit you’ve been straining to produce will start flowing on its own when you stop striving in your own strength and start abiding in His.

Don’t work harder to squeeze life out of a branch. Stay joined to the vine, and let His life do through you what your effort never could.

DAILY ACTIONNotice today where you’ve been striving in your own strength and coming up empty. Instead of pushing harder there, do one thing to reconnect: sit in prayer, open His Word, get quiet in His presence. Choose abiding over striving in that one area and watch what changes.

THE DAILY CHARGEEvery bit of authority and fruit you carry flows from one thing, and it isn’t your effort. It’s your connection to Christ. You are the branch, and a branch produces nothing on its own. Apart from Him you can do nothing, no matter how hard you push. So when you feel dry and powerless, stop straining and get back to the vine. Don’t work harder. Stay closer. Abide in Him, let His life flow through you, and watch the fruit you couldn’t manufacture start to come on its own.

LET’S PRAYFather, I’ve been striving in my own strength and wondering why I keep running dry. I forgot that I’m just a branch, that everything I carry flows through me from You, and that apart from You I can do nothing. Forgive me for trying harder when what I needed was to stay closer. Draw me back to the vine. Teach me to abide in You, to make my home in Your presence, and to stop straining to produce what only Your life can grow. Flow through me today, and let the fruit come from staying connected to You. Amen.
