        • E72: Starting, Scaling and Growing a Business with Jackie Reses and Lauren Weinberg

Starting and growing a small business is a challenge. If you’re finding it isn't, you might not be pushing hard enough. Scaling doesn't happen overnight either: it's a process — a long one.

In this episode, Jackie Reses and Lauren Weinberg share their business journeys to becoming the Self-Made Bosses they are today. We discuss everything from the mental side of starting a company to the practical aspects of a business plan. Sometimes you know what you want from the beginning, and sometimes opportunities bring you to unexpected places.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

          • Your company's working environment will depend on what your employees want and what your company does.
          • Starting a business is a challenge: are you ready with both mental and physical assets?
          • SMEs need to pay attention to many things, but cash flow is typically the most critical.
          • [07:47] Jackie and Lauren’s Journeys

Jackie grew up with the grittiness of entrepreneurship, eventually starting her own business at 16. She retained this mindset all her life. Combined with her desire for independence, an amazing education, and good experience at the start of her career, she had a solid mental foundation for work.

Lauren’s career path took her through multiple jobs. She took opportunities wherever she could, leading to a happy, accidental journey through a broad range of things.

[17:04] The Philosophical and the Practical

Starting a business alone is a highly personal journey — it's almost all about you and your resources. It has two aspects: a philosophical side and a practical one. The philosophical asks: “Are you ready?” Conversely, the practical requires creating and breaking down your plan. You have to know what you're going to do before you do it.

Starting a business will always be a stressful challenge, so it’s critical to be mindful: Do you need a break? Do you need to delegate? Stress can cause mistakes, so look for those signals.

            [29:47] The Workplace Environment

The last two years have changed how people work and spend their time. People have different priorities now, making staffing a challenge. While there’s a lot to be gained by working in person, not everyone wants to go to the office anymore. Ultimately, it depends on the business and the people.

            [34:25] The Growth Journey

There are several factors to consider when you want to scale as a business, such as cash flow, product lines, and staffing. Cash flow is typically the most significant issue for small businesses. It’s essential to consider how to acquire inventory capital or invest, but that’s not always readily available.

          • E71: Leading A Tech Innovation Fund

There are so many founders and companies around the world with incredible potential, but they may find it difficult to become successful if they can’t penetrate the US market. With so much knowledge, creativity, and innovation to offer, it would be a shame to keep them confined in a limited market.

In this episode, our host Kathi Sharpe-Ross discusses the opportunities and barriers in scaling businesses based outside the US and building bridges to different markets with Lee Moser and Roy Geva Glasberg. They also share how AnD Ventures works to build the ecosystem around them and create an impact.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

            • Having a partner on the ground is essential in scaling a business.
            • Investing right will open the door to more opportunities and help you overcome difficulties.
            • The medical, education, crypto, and metaverse fields will most likely undergo significant changes in the coming years.
            • [07:33] Dealing with Borders

Everything has become more easily accessible and scalable, but it’s still difficult to find investors for Israeli-based companies. Having a partner on the ground who can help you understand the culture and market often makes the difference between success and failure.

              [24:04] Helping Founders Scale

Lee and Roy’s business model prioritizes supporting their founders. They work with companies that are making an impact. It’s impossible to have enough money to bring the exact expertise you need for every startup that you want to work with so Lee and Roy allow founders to build their portfolios through their platforms.

              [27:16] The Impact of COVID

Despite COVID, Lee and Roy were able to gradually build their business and ensure they were capable of supporting companies. If you invest properly, more opportunities will open up for you. The startup world is currently full of opportunities, but also difficulties in growth.

              [31:23] Emerging Lifestyle Trends

The medical care and education fields will undergo the most changes in the near future. The pandemic made it clear that online methods are more efficient than physical interactions in these fields. Cryptocurrency and the metaverse can also bring significant changes, but they’re currently unregulated and need time to mature.

            • E70: The Era of “Aging In” in Leadership and the Workplace

Getting older is a tricky double-edged sword, especially in the workplace. While being tenured is proof that we’ve solidified our expertise through experience, there is also the looming fear of aging out of our jobs. But now more than ever, the workplace calls for experienced leadership.

In this solo episode, our host Kathi Sharpe-Ross delves into the growing need for Reinvention in the current hybrid workspace. Listen as Kathi explains how embracing the era of “Aging In,” an expression she has coined, opens up endless opportunities for growth in companies.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

              • Recognize that the current era of hybrid working requires experienced leadership.
              • Open up opportunities by embracing the concept of “Aging In” in the workplace.
              • Adopt the mindset of “Aging In” instead of aging out of companies.
              • [0:58] The Process of Reinvention in the Hybrid Workplace

More companies, brands, and agencies are creating opportunities to work in a hybrid environment. With all the complexities involved in this process, effective leadership is fundamental. It calls for experienced leaders with years of exposure to a multitude of management to step up.

[02:19] The Impact of “Aging In” in the Hybrid Setup

“Aging in” is the polar opposite of the fear of getting older and getting aged out of a company. There has been no better time in history to respect and consider the value older people offer in the workforce.

Remote and hybrid companies need this “adult supervision”. As older employees have been in the workforce longer, they have greater skillsets to help navigate working in a hybrid setup.

[04:39] The Era of Aging In

More and more companies are requiring senior leadership roles to ensure everything is cohesively running on track. In fact, the labor force of people aged 75 years and older is projected to grow by 96.5% over the next decade. We’re now in the era of aging in.

              • E69: “Aging In” – How Today’s Generation Can Learn from Previous Generations

When you look at the future, what do you see? Technology and world events have changed the face of business. Companies today face new working environments, cutting-edge communication technologies, and a diverse range of people with different experiences and viewpoints. The future is bright for those with the will to adapt!

In this episode of THE POWER OF RE:INVENTION, I bring on Jamie Gutfreund, CMO of Whalar. She’s been in and out of the workforce and held multiple high-powered positions for various companies. When she looks at the future, she doesn’t feel fear. She sees opportunities.

Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:

                • Listen to your gut.
                • It’s an era of opportunity if you know where to look.
                • Change in a company has to happen from the inside.
                • There are more opportunities for everyone, no matter where they are.
                • Fear aversion won’t help you adapt.
                • [05:09] Facing Junctures in Life

Jamie liked selling but eventually had to leave the workforce to care for her children. Being out of the workforce was fun, but Jamie soon got bored with it.

Jumping back into the business world was challenging — finding a job was almost a job in itself. But Jamie wasn't idle — she studied and always followed her gut.

[16:32] Aging In vs. Aging Out

We're in an era of opportunity for older adults. Maintaining cohesion is a critical skill for someone in a leadership role; older adults tend to have the skill set to do that in hybrid working environments.

Younger employees miss out on the contextual mentoring they could have received from a physical office. It can benefit the workforce to have days where everyone comes into a shared workspace.

[22:01] Opportunities at Any Age or Stage

New technologies and environments allow people to be in the workforce at any age or life stage. Jamie's company works with various people — like fresh graduates, differently-abled creators, and more.

[28:36] Navigating Out the Creator Economy

There are two camps: future-focused companies and companies unable to adapt. Legacy businesses may find it challenging to navigate the new environment. However, change has to happen from within — there's more to adaptation than hiring outside talent and fresh faces.

Jamie is between worlds: she understands traditional businesses and steeped herself in newer technologies and concepts.

                  [34:39] Facing Choices

Most companies don't like having to make pivotal choices. However, COVID forced everyone's hand: everyone has had to adapt instead of testing out new things safely.

Risk aversion is bad for a company. Success requires going out and learning new things.

Everyone is going through a change right now. People are realizing what they want out of their careers, and companies need to respond by redefining their culture, values, and leadership.

In this episode, Shirley Hughes discusses Rogers & Cowan PMK’s struggles and solutions in adapting to the new normal. Listen as Shirley shares how they redefined their workplace and leadership to accommodate the needs, values, perspectives and diversity of their team.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

                  • Redefine work and leadership.
                  • Listen to your team and accommodate their needs.
                  • Pay attention to other people’s mental health.
                  • Be open to different experiences and perspectives.
                  • Know what you want from your company and career.
                  • [10:38] Redefining Work

Each organization and philosophy is different. It’s important to do right by your team and rethink what’s normal right now. Let people deal with whatever they need to deal with in their personal lives. Consider generational differences as well. Try to listen to your team and find out what they need.

                    [15:19] Managing People

Our mental health should be taken into consideration now more than ever. Everyone is struggling to adjust to the new norm. However, the hybrid work environment allows for collaboration and camaraderie among team members.

                    [22:55] Different Experiences and Perspectives

Certain things come with age, such as experience. Every experience brought to the table is important. They allow us to make decisions based on firsthand knowledge.

If you want to work through the different dynamics in the workplace, listen to your team. Be transparent if you don’t have answers and be open to different perspectives.

                    [30:40] Balancing Work and Life

Working at home has allowed people to integrate their lives into their work more and make time for themselves. Employees are becoming more clear on what they value and are more deeply considering the culture that companies stand for.

Loving what you do is just as important as doing what you love. Believe it or not, your business has a higher possibility of prospering when you have fun and love what you do.

In this episode, entrepreneur Cricket Azima shares the story of how she reinvented the food industry through her food enterprises: Creative Kitchen and Cricket’s Candy Creation. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:

                    • You will learn what you want to do by learning all the things you don’t want to do.
                    • Enjoy what you do.
                    • There is no way you can physically do everything all the time.
                    • Building a business is not for the faint of heart.
                    • Make sure to balance work, love, and play.
