  • E056: Do What You Love and You’ll Do Well In It! with Musa Tariq

Do you feel stuck in your career or in your life right now? Today’s guest, Musa Tariq, felt lost at one point in his life when his parents died at around the same time, until a successful businessman gave him a piece of advice that changed the course of his life: “Do what you love and you’ll do well in it.”

Heeding the advice, Musa took an advertising job, which paid less than a job in finance. But every single day he went to work, he was the first and the last in the office – loving every minute of it. From there, Musa carved out a highly successful career path in brand advertising, having served in chief marketing roles at prestigious brands such as Airbnb, Ford Motor Company,  Apple Retail, Nike and Burberry.

Today, Musa Tariq is the Chief Marketing Officer of online fundraising platform GoFundMe.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

    • Where 80% of your time should be focused on
    • The four things he learned from taking a step back
    • The desire to do good in the world
    • Finding great mentors
    • Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
    • Episode Highlights:

4 Life Lessons From Leaving His Job

If you're not having fun, you're not going to do well in what you do. But a lot of people tend to get stuck in their jobs or their career thinking that taking a step back means career suicide. They don’t realize there is great value in taking a step back.

When Musa decided to leave a job he didn’t enjoy, he took with him these powerful lessons:

First, you realize who are the people and what are the things that matter most.

Second, there’s a much bigger story in your head than it was in anyone else's.

Third, you get to take time for yourself. Most of us are running a million miles per hour. But once you focus on long-term goals versus short-term gains, you learn to make better decisions.

Lastly, taking a step back allows you to strip yourself of your identity so you can discover the real you.

      Asking for Help

Research shows that people find it really hard to ask for help and that asking for help releases a chemical reaction similar to being punched in the face. However, the most successful people in the world ask for help. Obviously, you don't want to be annoying, but learn to ask for help at the right place and at the right time.

We can't possibly know everything about everybody and everything in the world. It's just impossible. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It's okay not to know everything, because nobody really knows everything.

    • E055: Taking Risks as Female Founders in Fashion, Business, and Life with Rebecca Minkoff & Alison Wyatt

What does it take to become successful in your industry? Today’s guests, Rebecca Minkoff & Alison Wyatt, define what it takes to grow a brand and keep up with the times and trends.

Rebecca is a global industry leader that offers a wide range of apparel, handbags, footwear, and accessories. She became an overnight sensation after designing a version of the iconic I Love New York T-shirt in 2001. Since then, she has hit the ground running as a contributing philanthropist, podcast host, and bestselling author. Alison is a veteran in the startup world having worked in a leadership capacity at iconic lifestyle and culture-shifting companies like Goop and Refinery29.

Together, Rebecca and Ali co-founded Female Founder Collective, a network of businesses led by women who invest in women's financial power across a socio-economic spectrum. They encourage and support women out there who are trying to find their voice trying to find their space, their place, and their confidence in doing the things they're passionate about.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

      • Where Rebecca’s inspiration comes from
      • Reinventing through COVID times
      • Looking at trends in building an e-commerce brand
      • Overcoming moments of fear
      • Managing expectations and taking risks
      • Episode Highlights:

        Reinventing Through COVID Times

The pandemic has forced many brands to figure out, once again, how to deepen their relationship with consumers and engage in an authentic way. Part of reinventing Rebecca’s brand is to be on social media platforms every day, even if it had nothing to do with fashion. It was all about taking people’s minds off what was happening through giveaways, sweepstakes, and all kinds of ways to excite the customer.

Building an Ecommerce Brand – Then & Now

As a society, anybody could now own the conversation around a brand. Whereas in the past, it always came from one high-up voice. As a brand, you have to give people permission to be part of that conversation and for them to have a unique voice so they feel that authentic connection to the brand.

Social media has become the primary mechanism for communicating with consumers. And so, by utilizing Instagram Stories or videos, people are seeing the unpolished view of somebody’s life and a contextualized view of the products. It just makes things more real – and people can relate more to that.

The Power of a Purposeful Community

It has also taken a step further than social where it's a broadcast mechanism. Instead, a relationship needs to be formed. That's why you see community groups being formed around brands. You're not only just seeing the picture that you can like or comment on. Whether you’re having direct correspondence with a customer service rep or you're participating in a challenge they're putting forth, you have to be part of a community that's around a much broader purpose and topic than the brand itself.

      • E054: Finding Your Starchip and Reinventing Yourself Every Day with Charlie Walk

Is being great at what you do enough reason to stay in your chosen career? Charlie Walk realized that he might have stayed exclusively in the music industry way too long. All along, he knew he could do more. His curiosity about a lot of different things led him to build brands –  something he’s now doing more of, rather than just getting so caught up in making money because he was good at it.

Recognized as the artist behind the artist, Charlie Walk is the founder and CEO of Music Mastery. His career in the music industry spans more than 30 years at many prestigious record labels. He has developed and mentored many of the most celebrated artists in the world including Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Drake, Post Malone, Jennifer Lopez, just to name a few.

Charlie now focuses on finding things that interest him – whatever that looks like – as he loves to Reinvent himself every day. Ultimately, the ability to start listening to your inner voice, and make space for it, is where things will begin to show up.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

        • Reinventing yourself and finding your Starchip
        • Finding your voice and using it
        • The journey to being great
        • Reinvention as part of your everyday conversations
        • Managing your curiosity
        • You can’t cut the line!
        • Episode Highlights:

          Reinventing Through Finding Your Starchip

Reinventing comes from identifying how you feel. Find your Starchip by understanding the God-given DNA you were born with, which makes you special. Whether you figure that out earlier or later, you still end up living that part of your life better and more fulfilled because you're doing what you love personally and professionally. And you're living the life you want to live, not someone else's.

          Reinventing Yourself Everyday

Focus on finding the things that interest you and Reinvent yourself with every opportunity you have, even if that means doing it every day. Reinvention is much bigger than you realize because it should be part of everyday conversations. To do that, you have to manage your curiosity by picking the things you're curious about and fire-hosing them into Reinvention.

          The Journey to being Great

Running a marathon takes intense training because you do not become great in just one day. You have to do the work. And so, if you want to be great at something, that takes courage, persistence, and hard work. You could be picked up on TikTok and signed up to a major label. But the faster you rise, the faster you will fall. Just because something is data-driven does not mean its artistry.

        • E053: Winning Through Strategic Manifestation with Andrea Albright

Are you all intention without any action? Winning takes work and commitment. You have to create those moments for yourself where you’re carving out your plan, your strategy, and your goals, and you’re committing to your intention at a cellular level – and that’s how you’re going to redefine your results.

In today’s episode, Andrea Albright talks about strategic manifestation and the three-pronged approach to winning. Andrea is the founder and CEO of Beverly Hills Publishing, a full-service high-end luxury publishing, marketing, and PR firm that's disrupting the $100-billion publishing industry. Her unique business strategy in putting the author first and creating a direct relationship with each thought leader has resulted in tremendous success, capitalizing on this gap by creating a disruptive approach to the publishing industry.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

          • How her identity shifted from making herself a CEO
          • Recognizing how you’re wired as an entrepreneur
          • The power of mentorship and the willingness to take risks
          • The three-pronged approach to winning
          • The concept of strategic manifestation
          • Episode Highlights:

            The Mindset Shift

When you have the mind of an entrepreneur, you do not choose it – but it chooses you. You're willing to take risks because you know there are opportunities. As a visionary, you can see into the future, even if you don't know what's going to happen.

            The Three-Pronged Approach to Winning

Money is the flow of value created and the lifeblood of a business. The more money you make, the more value you create, and the more people to serve. However, that money has to have the highest vibration of integrity Whether it’s your product or service, your team, or your clients, everyone is playing a win-win game. It's a three-pronged approach because you are winning, other people are winning, and the consciousness of the planet itself is winning.

            What is Strategic Manifestation?

Don't just sit in a lotus position expecting to draw things towards you. Be strategic about it. Anything worth winning is a game more complex than the average person could ever play, that’s why only a few people have the ability to win. Winning the game isn't possible without practice as well. Once you've set your intention, you have to be willing to put in the time, energy, dedication, and commitment needed to do the work.

          • E052: 3 Power Tools for RE:INVENTION This Holiday Season

In today’s episode, let’s take a moment to contemplate what our RE:INVENTION could be during this quieter time of the year. As you are getting ready to celebrate the holidays with friends and loved ones, take a moment to step back and reflect on all that has gone on in the last year.

I’m going to share some tools you can use as you reflect on where you are right now, what you're looking for, where you want to take yourself, and your next steps ahead.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

            • Map out your journey with pen & paper
            • Make a list of the things you’re grateful for
            • Make a list of the things you want to do in the next few weeks
            • What do you want to be when you grow up?
            • Episode Highlights:

Power Tool #1: Map out your journey.

Sit quietly with these questions, along with a notebook and a pen. Writing pen to paper helps you clarify your thoughts, remember things better, and reach goals more surely. Writing by hand provides a complex cognitive process involving neuro sensory experiences and fine motor skills. It is linked to improving creativity and critical thinking. It also leads to problem-solving by encouraging unstructured thinking and activating the creative side of your brain.

Now ask yourself these questions. Are you happy? If not, when was the last time you felt truly happy at work, in your relationship, as a parent, or with yourself? What do you most look forward to when you wake up every morning? Is it a place, a person, an activity, or an experience? Do you make time for it every single day? What can you do or add or explore in your life to stir your soul and put a skip in your step?

How will your journey look? What obstacles do you need to clear out of the way? What are your short and long-term, big and small goals? Who and/or what do you need to surround yourself with to accomplish these goals?

Power Tool #2: Make some lists.

Make a list of 10 things that put a smile on your face or have nurtured your soul in the last few weeks. Notice where they occurred, who you were with, and why they made you feel good. You'd be surprised at how much you take those things for granted. Also, make a list of 10 things that you want to do in the next few weeks that will realistically fit into your life routine. Give yourself something to smile about. Your happiness is the destination. So go for it.

Power Tool #3: What do you want to be when you grow up?

Reflect on where you've been, who you are, what you used to dream of, and all the things that have fallen by the wayside. Close your eyes and think of what you used to imagine your life would be like one day. Give yourself permission to dream as you did when you were a child. What did you want to be when you grew up? What activities do you spend hours and hours doing? Where did your imagination take you? When did you drift away from those dreams and why?

Launching a podcast is a huge endeavor. It takes more than just recording into your phone and hoping people will listen to it. Podcasting has shifted to a whole new level today. More and more people are leveraging podcasts to solidify their brand, grow their business, and expand their network. However, it’s not for everyone!

In today’s episode, high-energy and charismatic podcaster, speaker, bestselling author, and international top-rated course creator, Larry Roberts, shares a ton of great insights into how to launch a successful podcast.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

              • Larry’s career path from sales to teaching to kickboxing
              • His road to addiction recovery and how he got into the podcasting world
              • Digging into those moments of fear
              • Why podcasting is not for everybody
              • How podcasting has shifted over the years
              • What it takes to launch a podcast
              • Identifying your listeners as a key to marketing your podcast
              • Episode Highlights:

                Digging Into Moments of Fear

We all deal with the fear of doing something new all the time, especially with everything we’ve all been through during the pandemic. Ultimately, it’s a choice you have to make. How do you choose to deal with fear? It’s a matter of learning how to navigate through those moments when the world is just not handing you the things you want and figuring out a way to recreate or Reinvent yourself.

                Why Podcasting Isn’t for Everybody

While there has been an increase in the number of podcasts during the pandemic, we are now starting to see a downward shift because people have realized it takes more than just a mic to do it – successfully.

If your goal is to reach an audience and deliver a message, it has to go beyond that. It has to be more than just recording into your phone. Especially with the influx of corporate media, every media outlet now has a podcast, and they're all professionally produced, edited, and audio-engineered. Therefore, you have to create that experience where people look forward to listening to it. Unfortunately, those days of grabbing your phone, recording an episode, and calling it a podcast are all gone.

What It Takes to Launch a Successful Podcast

First, understand why you’re starting a podcast. What is your goal for the podcast? How do you provide a great listening experience to your audience? If your goal is to connect with your clients, create a listening experience to make sure you draw the listener. At the basic level, you need these critical elements: microphone, recording device, podcast host, media, and distribution.

Once you have determined your goal, identify your listener, which allows you to customize the marketing plan for your show. If you have a business show, you may lean towards LinkedIn for most of your marketing efforts. If you're targeting the younger generation, you may think about TikTok or Instagram reels.

The Power of Community and Mentorship

When you involve your people to co-create something with you, this becomes a movement. The more people you add to this movement, the faster it will grow.

The Recipe for a Successful Partnership

Having a business partner requires a unique dynamic because the success of your business lies on both of you. As you go through challenges, there will be moments where you don't see eye to eye, and not taking things personally can be challenging, especially for women. But you have to learn to take a step back and figure out a way to communicate and address those challenges while maintaining a level of respect. Allow your business partner to shine too by bringing each other’s strengths to the table, and allow them to learn new skills.

                  Reinvention Tips for Women Entrepreneurs

More and more businesses are now Reinventing themselves to be more empathetic and to understand their consumers better. A lot of them are gearing their focus towards the mental health space as well. However, many entrepreneurs put everyone else before themselves. As an entrepreneur, you have to learn how to take care of yourself and put yourself first because you can only serve people better when you’re 100% whole.

Being legally emancipated at 15 years old, Stephynie Malik had to learn how to live life on her own. All her life’s struggles have taught her to become fearless in putting boundaries around what’s important to her, finding solutions, showing up in a room and forging relationships. Today, she shares insights about how to Reinvent and evolve by building relationships through listening and understanding with grace and compassion.

Stephynie Malik is the founder and CEO of SMALIK Enterprises (SME), a global Business Consulting, Executive Coaching & Transformation and Crisis Management firm. Stephynie has established a 25-year world-class career leading and founding multiple global companies and over 20 years experience in the C-suite. Stephynie is also the host of Spin It!, a business and entrepreneurship podcast.

Today’s episode is co-hosted by Marvin Epstein, author, TEDTalk speaker and founder of Karma International, which is an exclusive membership organization.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

                  - Her journey from being emancipated at 15 years old

                  - It’s okay to pivot, make another choice and evolve

                  - Honing your soft skills (kindness, compassion and grace)

                  - Just getting in the room, no matter what your role is

                  Episode Highlights:

Make a Pivot to Evolve as a Person, Not Rinse-and-Repeat

You could be doing your dream job right now, but if you feel like you can’t connect to it anymore, that’s okay. You can always pivot and change your mind and evolve to the next stage in your life.  If something no longer fills you up, you can always move on to something else and grow.

                  Honing Your Soft Skills

The ability to stay calm and approach any difficult situation with grace is not something that’s innate, but developed. You have to train yourself to listen, understand and engage with the other person. As human beings, communicating on the same level is fundamental. Hence, listen to understand, not to respond - even those that aren’t being said: look at body language, tenor and the tonality. Pay attention to that person, pretend like it's going to be the last time that you see them. That way, you leave people feeling really special and that they matter.

Katie Chin is an award-winning cookbook author, television chef, and food blogger. Author of several books including Katie Chin's Global Family Cookbook, Katie was recently named the culinary ambassador of the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

Katie realized that her mission in life is to honor her mother's legacy through cooking. She co-hosted the national PBS cooking series Double Happiness in conjunction with her mother and has spent a lot of time around this space because of her mother.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

                  - Her mother’s success story from a tiny catering company to a $50-million company

                  - Katie’s Reinvention moment when she left her job in the entertainment industry

                  - Tuning into your inner thoughts and inner voice

                  - Finding a way to nurture your soul and reconnect with who you are

                  Episode Highlights:

                  Katie’s Role as Culinary Ambassador

In this role, she will be helping the organization to fund research and to find less toxic and more targeted treatments for pediatric patients along with educating the American public about the role of healthy ingredients and cooking in potentially preventing and eradicating cancer.

                  Your Road to Reinvention

Letting go is actually so much easier than you might think it's going to be. You just have to find that courage to release yourself from your own personal chains that you've identified yourself with. And sometimes, you have to learn how to listen to your inner voice amidst the sea of voices that surround you, telling you to do all other different kinds of things.

If there’s something telling you that you're not where you want to be and that there's something else for you, then tune into that. Find a way to nurture your soul and layer things into your life that are going to give you joy.

                    Finding Proof of Success

Success is defined in many different ways across many areas, whether it’s personal satisfaction, monetary success, or professional achievement. Now, you have to be sure to identify where the marketplace is headed and provide proof that it's happening (not only in words). There needs to be some sort of business element to it so you're not just making a bet based on the hypothesis. Therefore, make sure there’s proof to show you that you can be successful in it, whether on the basis of income generation or positive movement – versus just an idea.

Why Surround Yourself with Experienced People

As an entrepreneur, surround yourself with experienced people who have already done the entrepreneurial route and have done the things you need the company to do. Surround yourself with people who are smarter or who have an understanding of different landscapes because you can't see everything as an entrepreneur.

There's no beating experience. Listen to them extremely well. That doesn't mean you have to do what they say since you've got your own vision. But if you listen well, you can avoid the fatal errors as well as the more painful ones.
