  • Where is our whiskey?

It has been a while since Dan and I published a podcast episode. Why? Who knows. We've been busy with other projects but probably, the truth is closer to it just isn't as fun to produce these things remotely as it is passing bottles back and forth and sipping whiskey together. It just wasn't safe to do that for a long time but, with vaccines at full speed here in Colorado, we're getting there. We've still been putting up fresh Open the Bottle, Back to the Bottle, and Not Whiskey videos over on YouTube along with something new, Blind Shelfie Throwdowns so check those out when you can. See what other projects Dan's been up to and subscribe to his newsletter, Slow Guy on the Fast Ride.

We've got new episodes complete with us drinking bourbon, rye, scotch, and more coming soon. Thanks!

  • Has the pandemic changed the way you enjoy your whiskey?
The pandemic is changing how we relate to all sorts of life events, hobbies, and other things we perhaps took for granted before. Has the isolation changed how you enjoy your whiskey? It sure has changed our relationship with the spirits we love to drink. The most beautiful part of whiskey is sharing it with friends and that, for sure, is not the same today as it was a year ago. Bourbon, even modest bourbon, tastes better and adds more to our lives when it is shared with friends in the moment. Are you drinking more or less in these trying times? Either way, a change can be an indicator that you're struggling so don't be afraid to talk about what you are experiencing. Even if you feel ok overall, some anxiety or low-grade depression can find its way into your day and asking for help or even just talking about it, as Dan and Mark do during this episode, can help and let you know that you aren't alone, whiskey included.

  • The price of bourbon and rye whiskey just keeps going up and up and up!
It sure seems as if bourbon and rye whiskey prices are continuing to accelerate. Bottles that one day are gathering dust are gone from the shelf the next and doubling price the very next time you see them again. It's more important than ever to know what you're drinking and what it's worth to you. There are still great bottles we can buy most any day at reasonable prices even if they are getting more and more rare. Don't give up. Share that whiskey with friends, try some Irish or Japanese whiskey and let us know when you find some value in the market ... won't tell anyone, promise.

  • Goodbye 2020, hello 2021 and more whiskey and maybe rum and tequila too!
Dan and Mark talk about starting The Practical Still in 2020 and what's coming up in 2021. There will be guests on the podcast and new topics for the YouTube channel too. There will still be lots of whiskeys but maybe some rum and tequila too. Any spirits are fair game ... that's why it's called The Practical Still rather than the whiskey this or that. How about some brandy? Sure.

  • Only one brand of whiskey for the rest of your life. Which would you choose?
If you could only drink one brand of whiskey for the rest of your life, which one would you choose? You still have to pay for it and you're still subject to marketing conditions such as pricing and availability so if you choose poorly you may never again sip bourbon or rye or single malt whiskey again.

  • Does the color of a whiskey tell us anything useful about that whiskey?
What, if anything, can be learned simply from the color of whiskey? We all talk about the color when we find new whiskey and color is evaluated along with the nose and taste but what should whiskey shoppers know about whiskey color and what can it dependably tell us? For some, myself included, we just like the color of old bourbon and it's as much a part of the experience as glassware - it's just beautiful.

  • A $1,000 whiskey budget for an entire year? I learned a lot.
For years, I didn't pay much attention to how much money I spent on whiskey. 2019 was just a mess where I bought whatever I wanted whenever I wanted it and it was just too much. So, for 2020, I put myself on a $1,000 annual budget for whiskey - well, for sipping whiskey - and it helped on many fronts. Dan and I talk through the lessons and how I look at whiskey purchases differently now. While the budget has been exhausted, the year still has a few weeks left so what will I do now?

  • What should you do with that last little bit of whiskey in the bottle?
I don't know why but I often end up with quite a few bottles with just a little bit of whiskey left in them. For some reason, I'll just let them sit that way for too long. Usually, the last sip is my favorite so maybe I just don't want the good times to end. In this episode, we talk about different options for dealing with the last sip of whiskey in the bottle.I also repeatedly mention https://lincolnroadpackagestore.com as we finish off a 13-year-old Rye pick from Barrell Craft Spirits and open up a Russell's Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon from them as well. Check them out if you're into private picks (and you should be) as they have been at it a long time.

  • Where did all the Scotch whisky go?
One day, we looked at our whiskey shelves and noticed there were no open bottles of Scotch. What happened? Why did we suddenly stop buying and opening bottles of single malt Scotch whisky? And, when we finally did open up what should have been a lovely Bunnahabhain 12, did it take a while to remember how wonderful Scotch can? Have our palates been battered by barrel proof bourbon too long? Nah, we just need to remember that variety in whiskey is important and worth pursuing. Also, it's fun to try and pronounce some of those crazy sounding Scotch distilleries. Dan mentioned the factory Brian Cox's videos on pronouncing Scotch whisky distilleries, and they are entertaining, but I found this one by @Aqvavitae https://youtu.be/jcQglJyNL0w that gets through some popular distilleries quickly and I think is probably more helpful and accurate. It also settled that bit about how Scots call their whisky the 'water of live'. The word I was looking for is aqua vitae or in French, eau de vie and Italian, acquavite. Beyond the Scots referring to their whisky this way, the term, in its many forms, as been used to refer to distilled spirits for centuries. Finally, for some incredibly entertaining Scoth whisky reviews from an amazing character, check out Ralfy's Stuff at https://www.youtube.com/user/ralfystuff. He'll also give you plenty of Scottish pronounciations.

  • What is sourced whiskey and why should we care?
If you've been into whiskey for even a little while, you've likely learned that some brands don't distill their own whiskey and instead buy the liquid in their bottles from other brands and companies that do own distilleries. That's what is known as sourced whiskey. Distilleries such as MGP in Lawrenceburg, IN, and many others provide barrels of distillate to just about anyone who can pay for it. That doesn't mean sourced whiskey is bad whiskey, in fact, it can be quite the contrary, but it does mean you aren't always drinking what you think you're drinking. Dan and Mark think you should know what's in the bottles you pay for so they try to explain and help navigate the sourced whiskey world in this episode.
