The mistakes that you have made, as a step-dad, don't define who you are and who you can become. We all make mistakes along the way. We all have those moments where we feel ashamed or embarrassed about the way we handled a situation. But guess what? NONE OF THAT MATTERS!

Episode 076 was recorded for a Step-Dad of 5 who reached out to me through The Professional Step-Dad Website to ask for some help starting over with his approach towards being a leader, mentor, father, husband and more.

When I received this email I was so excited to record because this specific Step-Dad, had a level or personal awareness about him, that can be hard to find.

Here was his question:

" I also have 5 step kids and they have been in my life for around 6 years now. I have just recently came across your podcast and find the information invaluable. For 6 years I haven’t really put in the work though. I am close with some of the kids but also struggle with some. Like I said, it’s already been 6 years. Just start putting in the work like it’s day 1?Any advice for that?

There is a very BIG DIFFERENCE between a Step-Dad who is actively seeking advice with the intent to be a better leader and father. And, a Step-Dad who is just looking to surround himself with miserable people, so he can justify his failures and avoid all blame.

What I mean is there are plenty of men, who are about to be Step-Dad's or close to becoming a Step-Dad, that are doing everything they can to better themselves for the future. They are not looking to blame the bio parent nor are they willing to accept "the way things are" approach for the sake of existing. These men need to be heard. These men need to be supported yet all we do is focus on the Step-Dad's who complain all day long with no real purpose or reason for staying. Advice should applied with the purpose of failure forward towards an end goal yet most Step-Dad's hear the advice and do the opposite. That needs to change.

When you embark on your journey as a new Step-Dad you must understand one very important key element. You're a STRANGER but don't take it personal. You have to learn that TRUST is built over time and not over the weekend and there is no way around it!

Over time, you will connect the dots back, and you will realize that it wasn't about you and it was all about them. You have to give the kids time. You have to give the family time. You have to give your partner time. You have to give YOURSELF TIME and eventually the feeling over being the outsider will fade away into the dark.

The 5 Love Languages of Children is, and will always be, one of the GREATEST decisions I made a Step-Dad. I needed to learn how to properly communicate better with my kids so I began to study and read exactly how to accomplish my goals. It took time, patience, more patience, and then EVEN MORE patience but eventually I was able to break though which helped me become a better Step-Dad in more ways than I can count.

The reason I had such a high level of success was because I actually implemented what I learned and I didn't just talk about it. You can learn everything there is to know about becoming a better man, leader, and Step-Dad but if you are not actively putting that knowledge to good use, then whats the point? DO THE WORK STEP-DAD'S!

When you change the way you look at things Step-Dad's, the things you look at change. Not everyone is out to get you and not everyone is on your side. It's your responsibility to open your mind to new ways of thinking and doing, especially when it comes to your journey as a Step-Dad.

When you don't receive the love or trust from members of your new family is down't mean they hate you or want you gone! It means absolutely nothing in the long run as long as you can move past your insecurities. People won't see or feel what you are going through as a Step-Dad but that's none of your business. It's your job to work, everyday, on becoming the very best leader, mentor, husband and father that you can be for those in your inner circle. Change your perception and remember it's going to take time before you see real success.
