The past episodes of the Puberty Prof Podcast focus on the realities of the many influences young people experience. Although some influences can be positive, many are negative in which between being exposed to so much while also going through puberty and other growing up events, can create feelings of anxiety. To better understand what anxiety is and how we can help pre-teens and teens handle these feelings, Dr. Terri Bacow joins today’s episode to share her wisdom and guidance.
TERRI BACOW is a widely known expert in cognitive behavioral therapy, an evidence-based therapy approach. A Brown and Boston University graduate, she sees clients in her private practice in New York City. She is a media contributor and has been featured in Women’s Healthand Shapemagazines, and Scary Mommy, as well as various blogs and podcasts. Dr. Bacow is also the author of Goodbye, Anxiety: A Guided Journal for Overcoming Worry.

This upcoming week is Global Unplugging Day in which people around the world will “unplug” from technology. So how can you help the young people unplug? And how can you help them self-regulate their personal devices? Listen in to this episode of the Puberty Prof podcast in which Sarah Maynard explains the need to talk with young people about technology communication. Sarah is the person behind “The Start Effect” and mom to four children. In addition to summarizing current happenings with online technology, Sarah provides recommendations for parents and other caregivers on how to monitor and communicate with your children about being unplugged, including creating a “contract” to help with the self-regulation of using personal devices.

The word “beautiful” is often referred to how something looks on the outside, including people. In the last episode of the Puberty Prof Podcast, Dr. Dalmacio Dennis Flores noted common communication barriers existing between parents and their children when it comes to talking about human sexuality, including puberty. In this episode, Dr. Flores returns and provides recommendations for removing these barriers and creating “bridges” in communication. Recommendations include talking before the “expiration date,” remembering that being asked questions are expressions of trust, gently ask what they are asking about, realizing you don’t have to know everything, and using teachable moments.

Dr. Dennis Flores is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, an affiliated faculty at the Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Program, and is a Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Center for Research on AIDS at Yale University’s School of Public Health. He has led several studies that investigates the role of parents in the sexual health education of their adolescent children who identify as LGBTQ. His studies fuel his subsequent HIV prevention work that includes both urban and rural community education, being a national spokesperson for HIV testing campaigns, and workforce development with around 1400 nurses across three continents. Dr. Flores earned his PhD from Duke University, a Masters in Public Health Nursing Leadership at Emory University, and a Bachelors in Nursing from Kennesaw State University in Georgia.
