  • My Failed Experiment & How Design Thinking Helped Me Develop Failure Immunity: The Last Episode
Have you ever failed at something very important to you? If you have, I know what you feel. It sucks, right?
But I guess the more important question I have is: What did you do about it? That’s what we’ll discuss in this season-ender episode of The Purposeful Creative.
This podcast started out as an experiment, and in this episode, I’ll be telling you more of the results of the experiment, what I’ve learned, where I failed, and what I’m going to do about it.
Hopefully, at the end of this episode, you walk away with a new perspective on failure, as well as ideas on how to approach your next project.
This episode is for you if:
Failure scares you, and you find yourself overthinking a lot of things instead of just jumping in and doing it! (That makes a lot of us, am I right?!)

  • Mini: How to Start A Social Enterprise – or Any Purpose-Driven Project (with Reese Fernandez-Ruiz)
In today’s short episode, Reese Fernandez-Ruiz of Rags2Riches is back to talk about how to start a social enterprise. In this episode, she’ll outline how she started that journey, and more valuable tips on becoming a social entrepreneur.

Notes from our interview with Reese Fernandez-Ruiz:
How she started a social enterprise:

    * “First, we went to the communities and tried to understand where they were coming from. We tried to leave behind our pre-conceived notions, our biases, and the frameworks we learned in school – and we did that over and over and over again. Just trying to understand them.”
    * “Second, we just tried things out without the pressure to be perfect, and beautiful, and world-class immediately. It’s a process of quick prototypes and learning. The best teacher is experience. The bad decisions you made before… that’s how you get experience.”
    * “Third… we collaborated with others. We didn’t have the monopoly on the best ideas, or expertise, or talents, so why not collaborate? We got a lot of ‘no’s and ‘maybe next time’s… it’s okay to get a lot of NO’s in your life, but still try and reach out and put yourself out there, and something is bound to happen.”

  • Ep. #15: Finding Your Why & Growing Your Business Around It – Social Entrepreneurship with Reese Fernandez-Ruiz)
‘Before, [my relationship with purpose] was very image-driven. ‘Okay, I will look like a good person, I’m amazing, I’m such a great entrepreneur.’ But it has evolved over the years. It became less about how it will look like on me, and to how it will look like in the world.’
That is just one of the many, many extremely vulnerable, uncomfortable, gut-wrenching truth bombs from Reese Fernandez-Ruiz in this episode.
Reese Fernandez-Ruiz is the co-founder of the social enterprise called Rags2Riches, or R2R for short. R2R is a fashion and design house that crafts eco-ethical products woven by empowered community artisans from underprivileged and indigenous communities from the Philippines. The brand is all about making things that matter, and weaving joy into every story. Every product is handmade by artisans from the R2R community, using upcycled, overstock cloth, and indigenous fabrics.

Reese, as co-founder of R2R, has been included in the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2015, she has been recognized as a Global Good Fund Fellow, the 2010 Rolex Awards for Enterprise, is a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, and was a recipient of the 2015 Eileen Fisher Women in Business Award. That’s just the tip of the iceberg — the list of awards is very, very long.
THIS EPISODE IS FOR YOU IF…
You are looking for clarity about your Why. This is for you if you find yourself constantly simmering or grappling in your thoughts of wanting to find your purpose, or maybe starting a business or project with social impact, or just finding work that is meaningful to yourself and to the world — but don’t really have someone to talk to about it.

  • How to Share Your Work on Social Media… Without The Shame [Quick Start Guide]
I know how intimidating it is to start sharing your work online, and being really anxious about what your friends will say – especially your immediate circle. You get scared that they’ll make fun of you, tease you, or think you’re being too ambitious, or “trying too hard.”
In this minisode, Reese Lansangan, a singer-songwriter, shares how she first started posting her music online, and how she overcame her confidence blocks.
THIS EPISODE IS FOR YOU IF…
You’ve ever felt embarassed or shy or scared to share your work online for fear of being judged, teased, or shamed.

Want to hear my full interview with Reese? CLICK HERE.
We discuss the sensitive topic of making money from your art, having BIG ambitions and not being shy about it, and what it’s like (and what to do) when you have more than one passion.
You can listen to the full episode here.
And here’s one of my favorite songs that Reese wrote and performed:

So whether it’s sharing about your side business, your freelance side-hustle, or maybe just a passion advocacy project, or just something creative you’re working on — there’s nothing wrong with sharing your progress & growth to the world.
It’s a great way to get collaborators, get feedback, and even just to connect and help other people in some small way.
And from the e-mails that I got, and I got A LOT — I really am so, so proud that this is the type of people that we have in our learning community:
People who, yes, struggle with the feeling of shame or fear of being judged, but little by little, try to overcome that fear everyday. I’m also really amazed by all the passion projects that you guys are pursuing, in your own communities, in your own way, using your own unique skills.
This is the type of community I want to cultivate, and I am so grateful that you guys keep sharing that to me, because it inspires to continue what I do.

  • Ep. #14: Why It’s Okay to Have More than One Passion, Unabashed Ambition, and to Make Money from Your Art (with Reese Lansangan)
Today’s guest is Reese Lansangan, a 26 year old singer-songwriter, visual artist, graphic designer, fashion designer, and published author; all rolled into one convenient sushi.
In this conversation, we we delved into tricky issues like feelings of jealousy and the habit of comparison in the age of social media, we talked about shame and shaming when you’re putting your work out there, we talked about the stereotypes of being an artist vs. being a sellout.
We also talked about ambition, and why that’s an asset, and not something to be ashamed of. Lots of really tricky stuff, but we discussed it in a very light-hearted way.
THIS EPISODE IS FOR YOU IF…
You’re a creative person with lots of ideas, but struggle with getting organized. This is also for you if you feel like you’re not the “entrepreneurial type” – let’s unpack and disprove that.

  • Mini: Building A Team Around Your Passion Project (with Roxy Navarro)
In today’s story I am bringing back Roxy Navarro, who I talked to in the previous episode, Episode 13, where we talked about her business called Works of Heart.  In this episode, she’ll tell us about how she found like-minded people, rallied them around the idea, and how they were able to build their company and make it even stronger together.

    Notes from Roxy:
How she rallied her friends to start her passion project (turned business!):

    * “I made a slide deck and a logo… something tangible to present to people.” Create something tangible to communicate your idea – this will help you and others take your ideas more seriously.
    * She sent emails to friends so she can pitch the idea to them.
    * Brainstormed with the team
    * They bought a domain name. By investing a bit of money, it gave them more accountability, and gave them a deadline for launching a site. Roxy: “You have to make small investments that are tangible, because it shows people – and yourself – how committed you are.”
    * They launched the site and asked people to share it. From there, people started contacting them, asking about services and rates.
    * They prepared the pitch for these initial potential clients.
