To mark 27 years since @classicfm began broadcasting on 7th September 1992, here’s the original Birdsong soundtrack as used by ClassicFM for its test transmissions.
This episode of Radio Birdsong comes from Snowdonia, North Wales. High above the Aberglaslyn Pass, looking out across the Lleyn peninsular and the traeth to Harlech with Cnicht and Snowdon rising majestically behind us, this is Radio Birdsong from Wales. Captured early one morning as rhododendrons splash their vibrant colours over the mountainsides and streams pour down from hills where sheep graze and larks fly high.
The original Radio Birdsong is now a podcast!
Throughout the summer of 1992, listeners heard birds and country sounds on their radios as a new station, Classic FM, prepared to go on air and tested its transmitters with Radio Birdsong.
The original recordings, made in Quentin Howard's Wiltshire garden, were digitally mixed into a soundscape by Doug Ford (from Skywalker Sound) to produce this now famous recording of Radio Birdsong.
