Meanwhile, some news…

Sirius XM debuted a Pandora channel for its satellite and online subscribers yesterday. Pandora Now, a programmed and uncensored channel covers many different genres of music, from pop to hip hop, dance and latin. It’s available on Sirius Channel 3.

Katz Media Group raised over $45,000 for the Broadcasters Foundation of America with their 10th annual company membership drive., bringing the total raised over those years to more than $350,000 for the Stu Olds Memorial Fund, named for their former CEO. The foundation provides aid to those in the industry that need assistance for various reasons. You can get details and donate yourself online at broadcastersfoundation.org.

Late yesterday came word that former Bonneville and Hubbard President Bruce Reese has died at the age of 70. He served as Bonneville’s President from 96 to 2010, then segued over to Hubbard with the sale of a handful of stations and stayed there till 2014. He since served as an advisor to the company. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Here’s transaction details for any programmers who aspire to be owners someday… The stations in the Wichita KS area sold by Rocking M Media to Matt Baty and Tommy Castor’s group called Allied Media went for $6.1 Million. Not too shabby.

Y100 in Miami has found their new PD, effective immediately. Welcome to America, Taylor Jukes, formerly of Bell Media in Toronto. She aserved as the Senior Mgr of National Content for the Canadian division of iHeartRadio and was the PD of Virgin Radio Toronto prior to that gig.

Radio One Philly names veteran PD Jay Dixon to that post for three of their stations. He’s been a consultant most recently, for KBLX in San Francisco and for Emmis in New York the last five years.

Warner Music Nashville has promoted Cris Lacy and Ben Kline to EVP A&R and EVP and GM, respectively. Also, Scott Hendricks gets a new title as EVP A&R and Creative Advisor. All three report to Chairman and CEO John Esposito.

Reuters reports that iHeartMedia has filed for an initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission to list its Class ‘A’ common shares, as it nears bankruptcy exit. The company did not disclose the number of shares it was offering, or set a price range, but said it will have two classes of shares. It just set a placeholder amount of $100 million to indicate the size of the IPO, although that can change.

In other iheart news, CEO Bob Pittman is on the media circuit, talking about how quote “audio is hot for the first time in decades.” Of course, he’s referring to more than just broadcast radio, but podcasting and other new platforms. iHeart obviously intends to be a player in that discussion beyond what they already do, so watch this space for more coming soon.

An interesting tidbit from Integr8 Research, whose study “The Alexa Effect” is being doled out in a blog series at their website. The survey most recently reveals that listeners who don’t own an actual radio in their house are the least likely to stream AM or FM stations on their smart speaker. It’s spun in the blog as a good thing, but I’m not sure of the logic. Go ahead and have a read yourself online at integr8research.com.

The lineup is set at KTU New York’s KTUphoria show for June 15th. A-list Artists include the Chainsmokers, Ellie Goulding, Bebe Rexha, Becky G and more. Find details to try and route your own radio show dates with all the artists (wink wink) at ktu.com.

Tomorrow, 93.7 KRQ in Tucson and syndicated morning show Johnjay and Rich are hosting an event to benefit Johnjay Van Es’s #lovepup foundation. The free pet friendly event will focus on raising funds, supplies and awareness for local rescue organizations.

On Tuesday, Radio Ink publisher Deborah Parenti surprised iHeartMedia New York EVP of Programming Thea Mitchem with the news she’s made the cover of their Most Influential Women in Radio issue, due out in May. Mitchem of course is also day to day PD of Power 105-1.

Finally, VO legend Chris Corley’s celebration of life has been set officially for this Saturday in Fort Myers FL. He sadly lost his battle with Pancreatic cancer just a couple weeks ago. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

We reported yesterday that the Rolling Stones tour was to be postponed for an unidentified medical procuedure Mike Jagger needed to have… it’s now been identified. The 75 year old Jagger will be having surgery to replace a heart valve this Friday, but is expected to make a full recovery and resume touring this summer.

Word came yesterday afternoon that after the LAPD had identified a suspect in the shooting death of rapper Nipsey Hussle… They tracked him down and captured him. They say 29 Year Old Eric Holder is their guy, that he and Hussle knew each other prior to their dispute, and that Holder fled the scene after shooting and killing the rapper. Hussle was only 33 years old.

The Radio Advertising Bureau Mercury Awards have extended their deadline to enter. The new entry deadline is April 19th. They’ve added two new awards this year… Creative use of Sound or Music and Creative Use of Audio, which is open to agencies, production companies and advertisers in addition to radio stations… this is on top of the coveted Best of Show prize, whose winner receives $50,000. Similarly… Conclave has revealed their nominees and opened the polls for the 2019 Conclave Radio Awards. The polls close This Friday at 11:59p eastern and the winners will be revealed at Conclave, June 19-21 in Minneapolis. Details at TheConclave.com.

Reviver Entertainment group has announced they’ve got a new label imprint.. DAV-MO-RECORDS is named for Moe Shulman, the father of founder, President and CEO David Ross. Shulman has been around the records industry for EIGHTY years, having worked with legeldns like the Stones, Tom Jones, ZZ Top and more. The new imprint will include newly signed Thompson Square and Aaron Goodvin.

Finally … In tech news that should scare the bejesus out of you… Pandora is preparing beta testing ways for their listeners to interact with commercials via voice commands, for example, telling the app to skip a commercial if they’re not interested or requesting more information about a product if they are. For any radio person who’s ever had a client ask them to include “mention this ad to receive… whatever discount” in the production… well… Pandora basically is solving that dilemma. The advance of that technology will make things get pretty interesting pretty quickly.

A quick rundown of today’s headlines looks like this …

Yesterday was April Fools day. Nothing significant happened. We had a GREAT podcast with huge breaking news… glad we all made it through the day! Elsewhere in Philadelphia, Beasley adult hits 95.7 BEN FM flipped formats for the day… Playing any “THEME” we want… meaning, all TV theme songs.

Moving over to Wichita Kansas, where an ownership torch has been passed. Allied Media Partners has come to terms to purchase six Wichita area stations from Rocking M Media. The new company is comprised of two Wichita natices – CEO Matt Baty and COO Tommy Castor. Baty’s experience is on the business side and Castor is the programmer and radio guy. He’s been a GM for Rocking M since last year and previously spent a decade programming iHeartMedia CHR Channel 96-3.

Hubbard Country B-105 in Cincinnati celebrated the station’s FIFTIETH birthday yesterday! On April 1, 1969 they signed on and started playing country music… now, thru several ownerships, fifty years later they’re still doing what they do. To celebrate, Jason Aldean announced a show this summer along with Kane Brown Dee Jay Silber and Carly Pearce will be the official 50th birthday bash for the station.

Fallen former sports radio host from The Fan in NY… Craig Carton is due to face sentencing for convictions on all counts in a securities fraud Ponzi scheme, in which the host raised millions of dollars from a hedge fund for a ticket resale scheme, but then used all the cash to repay his gambling debts. Friends are rallying to the cause offering support for Carton and asking the judge to go easy on him – including Boomer Esiason, former NJ Governor Chris Christie and actor Joe Poscopo, among others.

The Rolling Stones have announced they’re postponing the North American leg of the No Filter tour, which was to fire up in Miami April 20. The announcement goes on to explain that Mick Jagger requires some medical treatment, but doesn’t go into detail for what. A source close to the band says it’s nothing serious.

For anyone thinking about launching a new podcast, the metrics company called Podtrac has release a list of the top national formats, ranked by unique monthly audience. The top categories, not surprisingly, are Comedy, News & politics, society and culture and business. Comedy, for example, shows an 82% bump in audience Year over Year, but also had a 50% bump in the number of shows it tracked year over year. Find the results of the whole survey at Podtrac.com.

There’s a new SVP of Programming for iheartMedia in Indianapolis… Dave Hill is the new SVP for Q95 and Alt 103.3, effective next week. He most recently served as PD of Big 105.9 in Miami.

A pair of PD’s in Cleveland, as iHeart names Carletta Blake PD of country station WGAR and Jason Carr PD of Adult Hits 106-5 The Lake. They fill the shoes left by Charley Connoly, who departed last month, and will report to SVP programming Keith Abrams.

Alpha Media Alt 105 point 1 Louisville has named Phil PK Kukawinski as program director. He most recently was at alternative WFUZ in Wilkes Barre Scranton, and spent time at Bell Media Alternative CIMX in Windsor/Detroit.

Neuhoff Media Bloomington announced Wes Styles as the new program director of adult hits 97.9 BOB FM.

Rover’s Morning Glory is in for mornings at iHeartMedia Rock 95-1 ZZO Allentown PA, starting Monday. Former morning host Keith Moyer moves to afternoons on the same day and debuts “The Keith Show.”

Live from Worldwide Radio Summit in Burbank, California… last night was the unofficial kickoff to the festivities with the 2019 Opening Night Cocktail party sponsored by Westwood One and hosted by Rick Party and Sasha the Diva. It’s somewhat of a new year for WWRS, in that the last several years have seen the conference right in the heart of the action, and riff raff, being held at hotels right on Hollywood Blvd. However this year, it’s being held at the gorgeous Castaway outside Burbank, with views for days. I’ll be back in a separate segment running down the highlights of the two and a half day conference in just a few minutes.

Meanwhile, outside of the Burbank bubble and elsewhere, the totals are in from Urban One’s national 11th annual St Jude Cares for Kids Radiothon held on March 7th and 8th across the US. Their stations collectively raised more than $1.6 Million in cash and pledges which is amazing! The years top fundraising stations include Praise 102.5 in Atlanta, Praise 104.1 in DC and The Light in Raleigh NC. St Jude is a remarkable organization, if you’ve never had the chance to go. I’ve had the honor of attending their seminar in Memphis a few times and to be perfectly honest, for what a hospital normally feels like, like you might be used to, St Jude is absolutely none of that. It is a tremendously optimistic place, full of hope and brave, brave people… most of them kids. Some question the idea of doing large scale fundraisers and sending those proceeds out of your local market, but I can promise you as I’ve seen first hand, St Jude is an amazing place and a worthy cause. We reported yesterday on the sale of podcast company Parcast, now another Spotify acquisition. At press time we didn’t have details, now we do. That deal allegedly worth $100 million, and even better, I mentioned a new podcast they’ve created featuring a former morning show host from Riverside San Bernardino … even better… the company itself was created by a guy named Max Cutler. Max is the son of Ron Cutler. Ron Cutler was the founder of Cutler Comedy Networks, which ultimately was sold to Premiere. But more and more of these podcast company victories are attached to names from in or recently out of radio – and that underscores the purpose of THIS podcast… to take radio pros who do great content and start helping make the transition from traditional broadcasting to include podcasting and other digital tech. Meantime, congrats to Max Cutler and staff on their success.

Additionally on the podcast front, Westwood One examined the role of new technologies in the audio experience with the release of their Westwood One 2019 Audioscape Report.

Hmmm… so you’ve gone from a morning show in Southern California to host of a hot new podcast put out by a company that was just gobbled up by Spotify. Seems like you’re making all the right decisions to me!

A philly fixture trades cheesesteaks for Tex-Mex and other Texas kinds of things… and Free Beer and Hot Wings, ironically, adds cheese too. Ooh. Now I’m hungry?

So I want to play you a quick snippet of a new podcast released this week for two reasons… first, the snippet. Reason number one… that voice, from the new Parcast original podcast called “Survival” which debuted earlier this week, is Irma Blanco. She’s one of us and most recently did mornings at KOLA 99.9 in Riverside San Bernardino till her departure last year. She’s now the co-host of this new podcast along with Tim Johnson, which tells the pretty wild stories of people who have survived some pretty extreme circumstances. I point it out as another indicator that good radio people can make great podcast creators… and further to that point, the company that has put this Survival podcast out, Parcast, was announced yesterday as yet another acquisition by streaming monster Spotify. They already purchased Gimlet Media and Anchor last month, now with Parcast they add another 18 original podcast series to their roster. The terms of the acquisition as of now, are still undisclosed.

iHeartMedia’s Newsradio 610 and 96.7 New Hampshire has raised over $153,000 for local veterans with their fifth annual Make 12 Hours Count radiothon. New Hampshire Today host Jack Heath did the 12 hour marathon broadcast from 6a to 6p and raised the money for an organization called Veterans Count – an organization that provides financial assistance, services and resources to New Hampshire vets, service members and their families. Kudos to Jack and the rest of the staff involved for a job well done.

Today, many across the industry are en route to the airport wherever their home may be to board their flight to the west coast for the Worldwide Radio Summit in sunny Burbank, California. It’s going to be a whirlwind right from the start. From Kelly Doherty’s exclusive Imaging House producers and VO bash to the official WWRS welcome cocktail party, to the official welcome address from All Access President Joel Denver tomorrow morning at 9:15. Yeah if you’re wondering… country on 94.7 FM in New York City used to be called NASH FM, didn’t it? Yes, it did. Till yesterday. Entercom announced that it’s dumped the Cumulus-flavored NASH branding in favor of simply “New York’s Country 94-7”, effective immediately. Cumulus of course, trading NASH along with a handful of other stations to Entercom for the stations in Indianapolis. No other changes aside from dropping the NASH brand are expected.

There are any number of things about radio that I love … and one of them is putting some kind of imaging or promo on the air, totally out of left field, that makes people kinda go… wait… what? Just like this. Wait… play that again? I thought so. San Antonio’s number TWO Hit Music Station… that’s the brainchild of National Director of Digital Content and new Energy 94.1 PD Ernie Martinez and VP of Content for Alpha Media Phil Becker. Their feeling is that listeners can smell BS from a mile away and that hype-laden positioning statements are a thing of the past, so hey, why not tell the truth about being number two? Funny thing is I remember the data from years back about the very same thing… people don’t love the “We’re number one” chest thumping, so everyone took that off the air, but never figured out what to say in its place, so slowly but surely those positioners crept back pn the air. This, to me, is brilliant. And you know listeners like the underdog, so even if they won’t admit it, I see the smirk and twinkle in Phil Becker’s eye on this one… Check more out and have a listen online at energy941.com.

In another example of radio doing incredible things in the market they serve, we look to Boston and Mix 104.1’s 16th annual “Mix Cares for Kids Radiothon” How much did they raise?  Over $618,000 and change in donations this year. That’s amazing. The radiothon was broadcast live from the Boston Children’s Hospital from 5:30a through 7p on March 15. Congrats to everyone involved on a job well done there.

Also, how about this… over $106,000 is headed to St Jude Children’s Research hospital thanks to 100.3 KRRV in Alexandria Louisiana whose annual Country Cares for St Jude radiothon was last Thursday and Friday.  Well done to PD Melissa Frost, and talent Pat Cloud and David Atwood.

Finally, yesterday brought the announcement from Apple that they’ve created a new, updated subscription service called Apple News Plus … this is $9.99 a month and for it, you have access to more than 300 magazines and newspapers, plus digital news services and more. Some publications included… GQ, Sports Illustrated, New York Magazine, in addition to papers like the Wall Street Journal and LA Times. An interesting play when you think about it, from a publisher’s perspective… if you used to get a subscription to deliver a paper from each house you delivered it to… and now you’re one of 300+ publica...

The industry mourns the passing of a voiceover icon … one of those guys that someday in the next few weeks, you’re gonna hear someone else say about him: ya know, they just don’t make em like that anymore.

iHeartMedia gets all fancy as they make their plans to reemerge from bankruptcy the second quarter of this year.

A handful of moves to report… including the return to a coveted time slot on a coveted radio station in an amazing market… if only the New England Patriots didn’t live there.

Friday brought the sad news that Voiceover legend Chris Corley passed away last Thursday night, from pancreatic cancer, at the too young age of 55. That’s audio from one of many tributes making their way around social media … Corley of course is best known as the voice of FOX TV, in addition to major league baseball, Discovery, a million other things on TV, the best movie trailers you’ve ever heard and a whole boatload of radio stations across the United States. A statement from Lisa Marber-Rich, co-founder and president of Atlant Talent put it best: “After 25+ years together, our hearts are broken at the loss of our dear friend. The world will be a quieter place without the melodious sounds of Chris Corley.” Well said, Lisa. Condolences to Chris’s friends, family and many admirers across the industry. Details are forthcoming but a celebration of his life is planned for April 6th in his hometown of Fort Myers. More thoughts on Corley at the end of today’s episode.

iHeartMedia is apparently considering an IPO … that’s Initial Public Offering … as a path back to getting its stock listed on a major stock exchange. They released a statement on Friday saying they’re quote “evaluating potential paths to achieve its listing following emergence from its restructuring process in the second quarter of this year.” A requirement in part of the reorganization plan to use reasonable best efforts to achieve a listing on a US stock exchange as it emerges from bankruptcy. An IPO is one way to do it.

Friday and the weekend were relatively quiet on the industry news front… I’m not going to cook up some data to share with you for the sake of sharing it… brevity, right?  So we’ll move on to the who’s who and where who’s moving across the industry, cause there are in fact a ton of those… the Jockline segment is next.

As of today, Jammin 94-5 in Boston sees the return of Ashlee Feldman to the morning show. “Ashlee and the new Jam’n morning show” (that’s what it’s called) is hosted by Ashlee and Santi Deoleo, in addition to other feature players time and again.

iHeartMedia Top 40 Y100 Miami’s afternoon guy Mack is making the long walk across the hall to sister station AC 93.9 WMIA for mornings. He’ll be joined by KIIS Los Angeles weekend host, Letty B and his Y100 producer Nick Pena. The new show starts April 1st.
