What company do you think of when you hear THIS . Unless you regularly crawl the trades and are willing to do some serious Googling, you probably haven’t heard it just yet. That’s the new sonic logo for streaming service Pandora, and is part of their new “Sound On” branding campaign that debuted on Wednesday. It includes a bunch of high profile artists like John Legend, the Jonas Brothers, Maren Morris, Bebe Rexha and more, and coming soon, you’ll probably hear it when you open their app on your mobile device. The logo was created by Grammy winner Matt Winegar, and is exactly what we’ve done at local radio stations for, well, forever, that other much larger, national or worldwide digital brands are now picking up on as well. I mean… not for nothing, but … RadioDaily. Thank you very much. But to me, it does illustrate a point to a conversation I’ve been having a lot lately. Radio and digital have been two entities mostly independent of each other these last handful of years, right? Digital has been moving toward radio and creating full blown content, obviously, rather than just jukeboxing what radio personalities already did when they played music. That’s why they’re having success, they’re moving toward what radio already does, but with new, cutting edge technology, which enables them to evolve beyond the limits of radio’s technology. It’s kind of a race to the middle… where broadcasting meets podcasting and streaming, etc… As the digital world makes its move toward radio and its base of listeners, shouldn’t radio really move toward digital, finding more and more creative ways to protect it? That conversation is why this podcast was created and will continue in future episodes.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of chatting with anyone is Australian radio, I can tell you first hand… it’s a treat. They do full blown radio in Australia, like FULL staffs, live all day, with a little bit of networking here and there but are really, truly doing the kind of radio we in the US long to do a lot of the time. And that includes full blown events, one in particular called Skyfire. This is an event put on by SCA’s Hit 104 point 7 in Canberra. Unfortunately, this past weekend, that Skyfire event took on a new meaning as attendees got a little more than they bargained for. The barge lighting the fireworks on Lake Burley Griffin exploded, shooting fireworks all over the place, some including into the crowd, sending people running. Remarkably, no spectators were injured, but the video is pretty intense. I’ve embedded the video in the show notes for this episode online at TheRadioDaily.com.

Where were you 50 years ago, when the original Woodstock took place? I was minus 8 ½ years old myself… meaning, not born, but what’s old is new and guess what… the lineup has been released for the 50th anniversary of Woodstock and the massive concert this August. That’s Woodstock co-founder Michael Lang in a conversation with iheartMedia New York’s Q104-3 morning man, Jim Kerr… that “big task” Kerr referred to is filling the shoes of the original artists at the festival 50 years ago. And that task will fall upon the likes of The Killers, Miley Cyrus, The Lumineers, Chance the Rapper, The Black Keys, Sturgill Simpson, Imagine Dragons, Halsey, Cage the Elephant, Brandi Carlisle in addition to original Woodstock arists returning like Santana, Dead & Company, Robert Plant, David Crosby, John Fogerty and a handful of others. All told, more than EIGHTY total artists and bands will be performing at the festival, taking place August 16th thru 18th. Not to be outdone, Lollapalooza also announced their 2018 lineup for August 1st thru 4th at Grant Park in Chicago. Ariana Grande, The Chainsmokers, Twenty One Pilots, The Strokes, Kacey Musgraves and more are among more than 170 acts on eight different stages for the four day festival. The entire lineup, ticket info and more are online at Lollapalooza dot com.

From the “what the hell were you people thinking” file comes the story about a lawsuit filed by the National Music Publishers Association against exercise equipment giant Peleton. Somehow, Peleton thought it’d be ok to host streaming classes for their customers using more than 1,000 unlicensed songs from artists like Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, etc., and oh yeah, charge people to participate. How nobody at Peleton thought about clearing the music in advance is pretty remarkable.

Lastly, police in LA were called on Sunday when the live taping of the hip hop podcast called “No Jumper” hosted by Adam Grandmaison, was robbed at gunpoint while broadcasting live on social media. A spokesperson for the LAPD confirmed the suspect was arrested for attempted robbery, but that the gun was a movie prop. People of course now are saying this was all a setup, but the podcast host told TMZ it was 100% serious and real.

Still to come… voiceover artist Drew Carpenter tells his story, of how he’s accomplished what many radio people dream about, a handful pursue and an even smaller handful succeed. I’m talking about making the transition from radio to VO, and even more unique in Drew’s case he didn’t set out to be the next HUGE station VO… he set out to fly under the radar and succeed without you really even knowing it.

Radio in Nebraska rallies to the aid of the communities they serve, we’ll give you a snippet.

While Cumulus is basically printing money with podcasting, Cox Media Group is allegedly talking about selling their way out of radio. Wait… Cumulus is making how much? This podcast will make millions eventually too, right?

I am a FAN of highlighting the things that radio does in the communities we serve, and firmly believe that our responsibility as broadcasters in those communities should take precedence when it really matters… today brings the story of exactly that. From Nikki & Matt at NRG Media’s Sweet 98-5 in Omaha, Nebraska … A snippet of radio coverage of the tragic flooding happening in Nebraska… and The NRG Omaha stations worked with the Salvation Army to collect more than 160,000 bottles of water and individual cash donations, all to assist those affected by tragic flooding in the region. I’m sure anyone in radio can recall that one “thing” that happened in their market at some point, where their station rallied to the cause and helped those affected in the community. And I’m sure that you look back on that effort as one of the more proud accomplishments in your career. So that begs the question… why don’t we spend more time doing stuff like that with our radio stations? That’s a future conversation here in the RadioDaily.

Meantime, in business news… Cumulus CEO Mary Berner has pulled the curtain back on what they’re doing in the digital space, and that radio is not the only solid revenue stream for the company. Digital revenue at Cumulus, among their “C-Suite” properties, grew by more than 60% in 2018 and quote “meaningfully outpaced the industry.” Podcasting in particular has become a focus and a winning proposition for Cumulus, whose portfolio at the Westwood One Podcast Network now includes shows from Mark Levin, Ben Shapiro, Suze Orman, Dennis Miller and more. And check this out… in 2016… the company’s revenue attached to podcasting generated about $100,000. In 2018, Berner says that podcasting generated $12.5 Million dollars in profitable revenue. She says that podcasting won’t be for one company to dominate, and that Cumulus expects to emerge as one of the leaders when the dust settles.

Some employees of Cox Media group have reportedly been informed that the company is quote, exploring options, for all of its radio properties. What that means in layman’s terms is they’re looking to sell of their stations and exit the business. This is a report from The Atlanta Business Chronicle who adds that there’s no timeline for them to jettison their 61 radio stations, which include markets like Atlanta, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Houston and San Antonio, TX, but that their motivation for doing so is driven by digital media economics. Of course both Cumulus and iHeartMedia have filed for bankruptcy in the last two years and have had to restructure as a result. Cox has already sold off a majority stake in their TV properties, plus the company’s radio stations and newspaper in Ohio.

Fresh off the iHeartRadio Music Awards last week, Ariana Grande kicked off her Sweetener tour last night in Albany, New York. Not one to let the moment pass, iHeartMedia CHR KISS 102.3 Program Director Terry O’Donnell chose to mark the occasion by handing over the keys to the radio station for the entire day yesterday … Ari 102 point 3 replaced the usual KISS moniker, and you guessed it, it was all Grande, all the time as the station went wall to wall tunes from the pop star as a primer for her show at Albany’s Times Union Center, and stayed all Ariana immediately following the show as fans left. Guess that makes artist separating all of her tunes a little easier for one day, anyway.

iHeartMedia top 40 Wild 94-9 in San Francisco rolled out its lineup for their inaugural Wazzmatazz Summer concert, happening June 2 at Shoreline Amphitheatre. Among those appearing… Halsey, Ellie Goulding, Ty James, Fletcher, Ava Max and more. Down the road a bit, just two days prior, it’s iHeart sister station Channel 93-3’s Summer Kickoff Concert… featuring… stop me if you’ve heard this one… Halsey, Ellie Goulding and more, actually… like Bebe Rexha, Bryce Vine and AJ Mitchell.

Binnie Media Adult Hits 107-5 Frank FM and country 99-5 The Wolf in Portland Maine, along with sister station 106-9 Frank FM in Rockland did some good in their world with the 14th annual Cares for Kids radiothon. They hit a record this year… with over $382,000 going toward the care, programs, research and more at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center. Massive kudos to the crew at Binnie Media for a job well done.

Podcast news… Podtrac, which is more or less the Nielsen of podcasting, in that it tracks listener data, has released their February 2019 rankings of the nation’s top 20 podcasts for the month. Topping the list is again “The Daily” from the New York Times, This American Life and Stuff you Should Know. Debuting at number 6 is the iHeartRadio original “Ron Burgundy Podcast” – keeping podcasting classy now for just over a month, featuring Will Ferrell as the title character, with co-host Carolina. So far, a half dozen episodes in, it’s getting mixed reviews, from users that say things like “no, just no. That’s all. Just horrible.” To glowing recommendations like “This is fantastic… Carolina is a dry poncho to Burgundy’s moist and tender Cisco.” I don’t know what that means, but if you hate the word moist, you hate that I just used it twice. Nevertheless… I think it’s an awesome attempt at some original content. Check out the Burgundy Podcast over on iHeartRadio.

Some warm and fuzzies across the industry last week, as a handful of stations got down to business doing what radio does best, and that’s making a difference in the communities they serve. That includes the staff at Entercom’s Mix 106-5 in Baltimore led by morning duo Regan & Bethany …  The 30th Annual radiothon, benefitting John Hopkins Children Center raised a new record… 1.3 MILLION dollars, bringing the total the station has raised over the years to more than 23 Million. That is a LOT of money for a two day radiothon, so kudos to Reagan and Bethany, Maria, Priestly, Neci and the rest of the staff at Mix 106-5 for a job well done.

Additonally, a smaller amount but no less kudos to Steve & Gina, Hoss and EJ at iHeartMedia Omaha’s country Kat 103 point 7… they held their 17th annual Canfest, which is an acoustic show benefitting Food Bank for the Heartland, and this year raked in over $15,000 cash plus a half dozen, huge 50 gallon barrels of non-perishable food items. Country artists Riley Green, Runaway June, Jordan Davis and Scotty McCreery performed at the event.

Elsewhere, Townsquare Media in Tuscaloosa Alabama conducted a ten day drive for cash and supplies to benefit those affected by the tragic tornado on March 3rd.

Inside Radio has the scoop on industry data with regard to how many stations flipped from this to that over the course of the last year over year… The data exclusively from Inside Radio and PrecisionTrak shows that the Soft AC and Modern Rock formats showed the greatest percentage gains in number of stations on the air from January 2018 to 2019. A closer look at Soft AC, for example, shows that as of January 2019, there were 124 stations nationwide, compared to 113 a year ago. Soft AC hit its peak about a decade ago with more than 210 stations nationally… and bottomed out in 2016 with only 112. The data is trending that it’s on its way back up. By comparison, the second greatest gainer was modern rock, now up to 118 stations nationally. Interestingly, the Alternative format lost a few from its roster… now down to 115. It’s a pretty interesting report om the state of formats across the industry, for sure a must read if you’ve recently flipped a station or are thinking about it… you’ll find it as a lead story at InsideRadio.com.

Spotify chief content officer Dawn Ostroff on a SXSW panel this week, explaining why they’ve shelled out hundreds of millions of dollars to buy Gimlet Media and Anchor. She sat on the panel with the executives for those two companies, who will remain in place as the three companies come together in a collaborative effort to advance podcasting forward even more into the mainstream. Part of that play, includes exactly what you’d expect… creating compelling content for their audience, and your listeners, to seek out and spend time with. What original content beyond some creative imaging do you do at your station? Do you just repurpose morning show breaks, or are you offering something different than what your listeners can get on the air? All good questions to ask yourself as podcasting dominates the conversation at SX this week, which continues through Sunday. Worth noting, by the way… you can listen to this very podcast, the RadioDaily, on Spotify already, and you should make sure any podcasts you or your station produce are available there as well. From Austin to a different conference in LA … All Access has a quick preview of some of what’s to come at Worldwide Radio Summit the end of this month. Just announced yesterday, All Access President & Publisher Joel Denver will be sitting down for a fireside chat, if you will, on Friday March 29th with Chief Programming Officer and President of the National Programming Group for iHeartMedia, Tom Poleman. I DARE you to get that title on a business card, by the way. Denver will lead the conversation about the state of the industry and promises to go in depth with one of radio’s most recognizable leaders in the process.

Another nugget to come at WWRS, this and every year, are the results of the annual Jacobs Media Tech Survey. That’ll be taking place on Thursday March 28th and is always really fascinating to me… Yesterday, in a sneak peek, Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs checked in with the data that of those surveyed this year, more than one quarter of respondents expressed an interest in PURCHASING station merchandise if they could. Now granted, nearly half of those surveyed said they were not, but is radio leaving a little something on the table?

Alexa … play my damn radio station. No not that one, MY damn radio station! The other station! Grrr… yeah, a little about that…

With the current smart speaking integration and subsequent imaging and promo rage, You might have something on your radio station similar to this from Cat Country 98.1 in Providence, Rhode Island … … So, in the first bit of a blog series from called “The Alexa Effect,” Integr8 Research divulges that the data of those listening to FM radio on smart speakers is actually down, year over year. Clearly not for lack of creativity in how you’re promoting it, but they cite a few different reasons that might be possible, including the fact that theres significantly more smart speakers out there year by year, reducing the overall percentage of “rabid fans” among the more casual mainstream listeners. Or put another way, the sample is watered down by people who don’t do as much with their smart speaker as the early adopters did. There’s some interesting data in there, some of it a little startling, honestly. iHeartMedia has done something pretty bold with a little AM stick in Allentown, Pennsylvania… Spanish ESPN Deportes gives way on WSAN-AM to the all new “iHeartPodcast Channel on AM 1470,” now airing original podcasts around the clock. Of note, let’s not forget that iHeartRadio is the second largest podcast publisher in the US, with more than 16 million monthly listeners across roughly 160 original shows, with more 25,000 podcasts available from additional contributors on the iHeartRadio app… They definitely have the content, and it’s an interesting play to take 2019 content and air it with 1920’s technology (well, maybe more modern than that, but you get the point). You have to wonder if it will introduce the concept to a previously unfamiliar audience… or alternatively, if someone who would be interested in a podcast has ZERO interest in anything on AM radio. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting experiment and quite a few people will be watching to see how it does. You can dig into it more at PodcastAM1470 dot com.

Typically, we reserve staff changes at radio or records for the Jockline segment of the podcast, but this one is kind of a big deal… Columbia Records EVP of Promotion, Lee Leipsner has announced his departure from the label after a long and successful 25 year run. He began his career at Mercury Records as the DC based regional promo rep in 1989,

It’s the inaugural episode of the RadioDaily… finally, launch day has arrived, albeit a soft launch for a little while, but today…

A flashback to that time one of my own station vehicles was found on blocks at the radio station, with its wheels having been stolen right off it… now a station in Denver, of course, sees that bet and raises it to theft of the entire vehicle, getaway car to another, and obviously some sweet publicity too.

Who among us hasn’t had a station vehicle or promo equipment stolen at some point? I remember one Saturday morning in Tucson showing up to the station to find our Hot 98-3 vehicle up on blocks… or another time when one of our SUV’s was stolen, unbeknownst to us, and discovered burnt to a crisp in Mexico weeks later. Well, someone in Denver has taken it to the next level… the station van at Jammin 101-5 was stolen, then caught on camera being used to steal another truck from a driveway. This from Fox 31 in Denver… . They haven’t found the stolen truck… but a listener found the abandoned station van in front of his house and called the station. While they didn’t offer a reward, the man did request the station play more Temptations and Four Tops… and I’m not making that up. All’s well that ends well!

More performers have been announced for the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Awards… The Backstreet Boys, Ella Mai, Lovelytheband and Marshmello with special guest Lauv were announced yesterday, along with Travis Barker and Yungblud being named as special guest performers with Halsey. They all join the likes of Alicia Keys, Ariana Grande, Garth Brooks, John Legend and more. The live event airs tomorrow night on Fox at 8/7 central.

Finally, odds are you’ve used G-Selector or at least the old DOS Selector product… both of course now owned by iHeartMedia subsidiary RCS, which also owns automation systems Nexgen, Zetta, etc. Last month, RCS purchased an online audio tech company called RadioJar, which gives RCS online streaming, ad insertion and content creation tools, which already include music scheduling, automation and cloud based playout systems. What this means is that stations could, in theory, use an all RCS suite for planning, scheduling and airing their final product. Schedule music and imaging with selector, insert your spots and traffic with the RadioJar tools and load it all into Nexgen or Zetta for playback. RCS also plans to demo a cloud based automation system that can import logs, integrate traffic and even allow voice tracking, all in the cloud without local installations… they’ll be showing that off next month at NAB in Las Vegas.

That’s Country Radio Broadcasters Board President Kurt Johnson opening up the 50th annual Country Radio Seminar in Nashville a couple weeks ago… I was fortunate enough to be there myself and if you didn’t get the chance, you can now absorb all of the wonderful uncut panel sessions, handouts and more, all for free online at CountryRadioSeminar.com. I will say this, however… if you have the chance to go in person, it’s a must attend for radio people in all formats, really. You need to see how the country format in particular conducts business. It truly is the coolest radio conference of the year… On Wednesday night, conference attendees were treated to an acoustic one man show from Garth Brooks. Thursday at the Ryman, performances from all the biggest Universal Music Group Nashville artists. Lunch on Friday with Rascal Flatts and more. In addition to NUMEROUS parties, performances and events all across Nashville. This conference shows you up close and personal how much artists in the country format care about radio, how grateful they are FOR radio, and how much they do to support it… even Superstars like Garth Brooks. Speaking of country… yesterday the Academy of Country Music announced the radio winners for their annual ACM awards broadcast coming up live from Vegas on Sunday April 7th. Small Market station of the year is KHAY/Ventura California. Medium market station of the year I, for the 7th time in its history, is WIVK in Knoxville TN. Large Market station of the year is KUBL Salt Lake City, and the 2019 Major Market station of the year is KNIX in Phoenix. Reba McIntire will host the ACM Awards at 8p eastern on April 7th, Live on CBS.

Finally… Last week, twelve kids and their families jetted off on the trip of a lifetime with Westwood One syndicated, The Bert Show… Bert’s Big Adventure is a nonprofit organization that provides a magical, all expenses paid journey to Walt Disney World for kids with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families. This year, the Bert Show took kids from all across the US, including Atlanta, Charleston, Wyoming and Indianapolis. Such a great cause, and wonderful example of what makes great radio… and what makes radio great.

In a stunning example of radio doing some good in the local community they broadcast in, look no further than 106-5 The Arch in St Louis and morning hosts Stacy & Jonah. Candace King, a St Louis resident and listener, was injured a few weeks ago after being hit being hit by a car as she crossed the street. She was knocked unconscious and left by the driver… and that’s where things get worse. While unconscious, someone stole her rent money from her pocket and wedding ring from her finger. While on the air, she explained her husband was killed by a drunk driver two years after they wed and she’s worn that ring faithfully ever since, now for more than 30 years since! Stacy and Jonah were heartbroken by the story and moved while talking to Candace. Fortunately, the general manager of the Diamonds Direct store, located next door to the radio station walked right over to the radio station while they were still speaking with Candace and immediately donated her choice of a replacement ring. Each year, the Mentoring and Inspiring Women in Radio Group compile and analyze the number of women in radio broadcasting who are rising to the ranks of management, and the data for 2018 has been released… These numbers are reflective of 11,225 AM and FM radio stations across America. 19.05% (2,081 stations) have women holding the General Manager position in 2018.  This is an increase of almost a total percentage point from 2017, which was 18.1%. Notably, this number continues to show consistent growth from 2004, when the percentage of female general managers was only 14.9%.  Overall, the best management opportunities for women in radio have been in sales management, according to the data.  32.6% (3,481 stations) had a female sales manager in 2018, and that number is up slightly from 31.9% in 2017. Now… The greatest challenge for women in radio management continues to be at the Program Director position. And I gotta shake my head at this one a bit… According to the data, women currently program only 10.6% (1,139 stations) and that percentage has basically remained flat for the last twelve years.
