John S. Zink is a Cadastral Surveyor in Idaho and came in to talk about the Boise Meridian Initial Point. Established on April 19, 1867, this initial point served as the cornerstone for surveys that mapped over 54 million acres under the Public Land Survey System (PLSS). Enjoy!
Event Description: The Boise Meridian Initial Point Celebration: Surveying the Past, Mapping the Future is a meaningful signature event within Idaho's America250 commemoration, linking the state's defining landscape and land system to the timeless ideals sparked by the American Revolution. Timed in the lead-up to July 4, 2026—the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence—this reflective gathering, hosted by Bureau of Land Management's Idaho State Office in partnership with the America 250 Idaho Task Force , encourages Idahoans to explore how equality, liberty, and justice have been interpreted, contested, and advanced across the Boise Meridian grid that still shapes everyday life in the Gem State. The event celebrates the Boise Meridian Initial Point, where Surveyor General Lafayette Cartee fixed the principal meridian and baseline in 1867, igniting the Public Land Survey System that laid out homesteads, irrigation works, communities, and public domains—while candidly addressing the deep effects of federal policies and treaties on Native homelands and tribal sovereignty. Rooted in America 250's pillars of honor, celebrate, and recognize, the program honors surveyors, settlers, land stewards, and tribal nations; highlights Idaho's enduring ranching, farming, and conservation traditions as well as its forward-looking advancements in agriculture, natural resource stewardship, technology, and education.
