The Rants Macabre

Horror on the Highways! We talk three tales of the road: Wrong Turn (2003), Scenic Route (2013), and the Peter Fonda RV classic, Race with the Devil (1975).

Returning to the Ryan Murphy roadshow of horror we arrive at season 4, Freakshow. We cover the series cast and their real-life counterparts, including many of the original cast of Freaks (1932). We study Todd Browning's cult classic film as the inspiration for this season of oddities.

We cruise through three tales of the sea: Ghost Ship (2002), Triangle (2009), and The Reeds (2010). Also exploring the legend of ghost ship The Mary Celeste.

We return to American Horror Story to wrap up our coverage of Season 5: Hotel. We talk about the season's highs and lows, and the rise of Elizabeth Taylor.

A Lesson in Horror: Nosferatu & The Lost Boys with Lori Learnard. Mindy's mom joins us to talk about her years teaching high school and the horror section of her Film Appreciation class. We compare & contrast vampire lore and kid's relationship with what scares them.

For the next few Lunch Hour Reviews we're going to be revisiting the American Horror Story franchise. Starting with Ryan Murphy's most ambitious season yet, Hotel. Starring Lady Gaga, Evan Peters, Denis O'Hare, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Matt Bomer, Sarah Paulson, Cheyenne Jackson, Chloë Sevigny, and the incomprehensible Wes Bentley.

When your home isn't safe, what do you have left? We discuss the boundary-intruding films that force their way in: Wait Until Dark (1967), Inside (2007) and You're Next (2011). We also hear a personal home invasion story from a friend. Come for the terror, stay for the mouth synths, and sleepy nunchuck practice.

We loved Outcast, the new Cinemax show from Robert Kirkman, directed by one of our favorite directors Adam Wingard. Based on his new comic series Kirkman tells the story of Kyle Barns (played by Patrick Fugit from Wristcutters, a Love Story is the kid from Almost Famous, Saved!) a man haunted by demonic possessions his entire life. We also talk possessions and the history of exorcisms!

While Mindy is in Las Vegas, Darren invited a guest host... the hardest working man in show business, Clay McLeod Chapman. We talk comics (Harrow County, LOW, The Wake, Wytches) and Clay's announcement that he'll be writing for the next volume of American Vampire! Also he is writing the remake of Let's Scare Jessica to Death. So much fun, so much news!
