Paul Karensa was invited to take part in a parliamentary roundtable on the future of RE.  He, poiticians, RE teachers and RE students, representatives from Natre and REOnline were also present.

Paul Karensa is a children's author, stand up comic, broadcaster and comedy writer for the BBE Christians and father of children who study RE so I was really interested in his unique persective of why RE is so important in the 21st Century and what he would like it to look like!

When most of your year 11 get 0 on the question about something in their mock, you KNOW you're teaching it wrong.  This was the experience of my department with RECONCILIATION!  So we got together to replan our lesson on this with the hope of improving this.  Such a measurable target.  This week I am delighted to welcome MY BOSS Pete Bowdery to the RE Podcast to talk about what reconciliation actually is, how we teach it. At the end there is also an exam focus too - what questions could you get and how would you answer them? I really hope this is a clarifying, enightening and practical episode that will change your practice.

As we check the news for updates regarding Russia and Ukraine, I take a look at the topic of Peace and Conflict.  A popular theme in the GCSE, I consider what war is, different types and causes of war.  Is war sometimes our moral duty or is all war is immoral?  I look at inspirations from some of the world religions consdering the Old Testament God and the teachings of Jesus, Islamic teachings of Jihad, and the symbolism of the Kirpan in Sikhi.  I look at Aquinas' Just War theory, the pacifist teachings of Quakers, and the example of Desmond Doss as a Conscientious Objector.

In rememberance of LGBTQIA History Month!
In this GLORIOUS chat with Rev. Andy Fitchet, we look at the damage that traditional and literal interpretations of Genesis have had on women and LGBTQIA Christians. Andy talks openly about his own difficult journey and the dangerous practices of the Church to heal people of 'gayness'.  We discuss homosexuality, gender, sexism, hypocrisy. grinder and Jesus as a trans male.  Andy is so theologically knowledgeable and also has the most wonderful sense of joy in his faith (the bit about finding Adam a 'helper' is my personal favourite, or how there is a special section in hell for polyester wearers if the Bible is to be taken at face value!) If God is not binary and we were made in his image, then we are not binary!

In this episode I interview identical twin brothers, Mark and Bryan from the US.  Mark is a baptist and Bryan is a Buddhist.  Their podcast 'The Baptist and the Buddhist' have the two of them chatting openly for the first time about their different faiths.  'Same DNA, different faiths. It is so mutually respectful and models what good dialogue looks like. These two humans are so calming that I actually felt so much more chilled after spending an hour chatting to them - it was magical.
We talked about their upbringing, what they love about their respective faiths, the similarities and differences in their beliefs; focussing on creation, ethics, life after death and consider that Jesus and the Buddha would say to each other if they met.

For us oldies, ECT stands for Early Career Teacher!  In this episode Louisa chat to three RE teachers who have just finished their training and embark on their first jobs!  Why did they decide to become RE teachers?  Why is RE such an important subject? What was the training like? What advice would you give to people thinking about training to be a teacher or about to embark on their training?  What has their first term in their first jobs been like?  They also chat about funny stories from the classroom!
If you or anyone else you know is thinking about training to be an RE teacher, this chat is invaluable.  Or maybe you are involved in training teachers.  Some of it is RE specific but there are lots of general advice for any subject.

Canon Liz Sherclif is the Director of Studies for Readers of the Diocese of Chester, Agent of Change nominee for the 2022 Northern Power Awards, author of 'Preaching Women: Gender, Power and the Pulpit and 'Out of the Shadows' preaching women of the Bible. We discuss the way women of the Bible are presented, our views on St. Paul, complimentarianism, toxic masculinity, the genders of the trinity  and Jesus treatment of women, institutional sexism and then we delve into some of the powerful women in the Bible - Eve, Sarah,  Bathsheba, and, as it is near Christmas - Mary.
